This is not democracy.

The Welsh are a, how shall I put it....? A curious sort?

I got stranded in Holyhead for two nights. OH. MY. GOD.

I'm white and I was terrified that pitchforks were going to be produced on one occasion! All I did was mention rugby 😁

Ok, so the racists on the Welsh Valleys are secret conservatives?

Have you ever been to a valley town? They are red through and through.

Are you telling me there is no tory candidates, or if there are they get no votes? Give me the name of the place and I will look at figures.

This will come as such a shock to some.

Racism runs through tories like blackpool rock. Not all tories, but you can't take them out without total dismantling

It's essentially how they have hung onto power. Speaking to racists. Dog whistling. I live in a labour stronghold, one thing that unites the tories here, xenophobia. Only a minute minority for economic interests, and those are getting fewer.

Even racists gotta eat, you see.

The older ones wistfully talk about Enoch being right.... for younger folk he was an ex-Tory minister who made racist hay in the late 60s and early 70s and has a large working-class Tory support. London dockers being one such group. The right-wing Monday Club was another Tory ginger group that ploughed the same furrow.

I can’t see Labour having a POC as a leader soon, or even woman. And what is the make up of the SNP

I loathe the racism that has sprung up, but I’m glad we’re seeing diversity in power. Not being in power is no that great.

I would also prefer less fuss over his heritage, it’s great but it’s because he’s good, BBC for example really pushes the angle

Mountain Ash

I didn't find town level results but looking at this, I see tories and other hard right political representation. I see people voting for these, even though the majority vote in their economic interests, unsurprisingly.

I agree with your last two paragraphs- the reiteration of him being Asian is likely to stoke the racists.
Same for mentioning he is the first Hindu - why mention that? It’s not like there has been a Muslim, Buddhist etc previously and I worry that it will promote divisions within Asian and other BAME (loathe the term) communities.
All Asians and, hopefully, black and other communities are aware of the significance of his appointment in terms of progress, even if they don’t agree with his politics.

BigWoollyJumpers · 27/10/2022 12:35

I don't think religion should be mentioned at all. In a secular society it should be completely irrelevant, although, in fairness, it is a positive that it is not a barrier to being elected, as it might be in other countries. What annoyed me most was Biden, who was all wide eyed and amazed that this should happen in Britain, WTAF, look to yourselves, you might try a woman for once, or even someone below 70! Barak Obama being the one and only exception to this rule in modern times.

TheNosehasit · 27/10/2022 12:42

Biden is of Irish heritage (and a concoction of other heritage too - though that seems to be the one he mentions most).
Ireland elected a gay PM with an Irish mother and an Indian father (they have coalition government so rotate their PM between two previously opposing parties).

It's not such a big deal in Europe really. The UK has been ok with women (Thatcher?), though they've not always been amazing.
When Biden was elected, I recall a major UK media fascination with the appointment of a black female vice-president I think? I'm terrible with names.

TheNosehasit · 27/10/2022 12:43

I have no idea what religion the Irish gay PM guy is. It's not mentioned.

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/10/2022 12:44

I watched the new PMs announcement on GB News. The racists reacted straight away and haven't stopped. It's nothing to do with the BBC or those who are celebrating our first PM of Asian origin.

The racists are raging and will continue to rage because PM Sunak is brown.

TheNosehasit · 27/10/2022 12:47

Kamala Harris!

Exactly. The BBC going in about the sun setting or whatever empire stuff they got excited over. I like the BBC and would keep it but I found it an embarrassment.

Luckily they can’t report he is Hindu or do empire stuff every day but will need to shift to policies.

TheNosehasit · 27/10/2022 12:53

The US was most fascinated about Harris' husband. I love the line from this "I'm not sure if the US is ready for a first lady named Doug!"

It's nice to see diverse society reflected in leadership. It's sad that it's noteworthy still.

TheNosehasit · 27/10/2022 12:54

Angela Merkel was one helluva leader too. Nobody fucking messed with her!

Miramax · 27/10/2022 22:51

The economic crisis is real... changing PMs or asking for GEs and bringin in more PMs wont magically wipe away UKs crisis...

I dont know how people think Labour will offer anything other than digging more debts and cut off hope altogether for UK to be in its glory.

We need to stand tough to the storm which is real and invitable... make tough but wise decissions. I am not a fan of Rishi but looks like he is the best we got ( both on Tory and labour) who understands and can predict well.

I could give him a fair chance.. why not?

TooBigForMyBoots · 27/10/2022 22:59

I don't know how people think Conservative will offer anything other than more chaos, incompetence and disastrous decisions for this country.

Quite. I don’t want “glory”, whatever that means. I’d settle for no children or pensioners living in poverty and that’s never going to happen under a Tory government whoever leads it because it’s not even an aspiration for them.

I think keeping Braverman in the cabinet now it has come out that she has probably repeatedly been leaking things via her private email for some time will hurt him with the wider public. Not much point keeping the ERG wing of the party happy if it makes the voters unhappy.

He needs a panto villain to blame when things go to s*

That's generally the role of cabinet women on that side of the house

How many billions were saved by Tory spending cuts since austerity began in 2010? The evidence that they made cuts is there - state school spending massively down, local authorities losing 40% of their funding etc.

Where did that money go? UK debt increased in that time….

Then covid came along and they borrowed even more.

So, riddle me this - what have the Tories done with our money? How does it follow that austerity = increased borrowing?

That is what happens when you treat the economy like a family trying to meet ends meet and shopping in Aldi instead of Waitrose. It is a flawed argument and people need to stop it.

The government needs to invest - by doing so, it attracts more investment and therefore jobs etc. Instead it goes about it backwards and that why the Tories have no clue about economic management.

Rishi Sunak is an investment banker not a business man.

Sorry about my spellings. I know spellings mean everything in this world.

I have only written about my opinion and did not demean anyone. There was no need to be this level of triggered.
Whoever it is... I only hope the UK gains its former shape. Good luck to us all!

Your spelling is much better when you're sober
