This is not democracy.

OP posts:
Morceaux · 24/10/2022 18:51

I’m glad the new leader was selected by MPs.

To me, it’s infinitely more democratic to have the party leader chosen by elected representatives than by a highly unrepresentative section of the general public whose only ‘mandate’ is paying their membership fee.

Worriedddd · 24/10/2022 18:53

Do people still think locking down the healthy low risk population was a good idea or was it mass hysteria? I wonder how long we are going to have to pay for this.

newnamethanks · 24/10/2022 18:55

Anyone who think that Sunak will do a worse job than the dross recently imposed on the country by Tory members is deluded. He can't be worse than Truss and her 'close friend' Kwarteng, so he's an improvement by default.

MariEllie · 24/10/2022 17:56

Just note that bankruptcy risk for the UK has fallen below that of France as Rishi Sunak restores the Government’s financial credibility, and markets radically reprice the political risk premium of this country.

Thanks for some good news for once!

Now. Can we get on with the job? (I'm not Sunak).

Hi @Badbadbunny

Would you happen to have a link to that as I've heard it mentioned a few times recently but it escaped me at the time (I put a self-imposed ban on all news during covid as it was destroying my sanity). I'd like to read a bit about that to see what justification he gave and who was affected. Thank you.

I can't comment on the numbers bit I was one of them. I was on a zero hours contractbwhile trying to start a small business.
The hours were cut to zero- no support, the business had to stop- no support.

Dh was furloughed for 6 weeks, but losing 20% of his salary as well as 100% of mine caused major financial issues.

We both worked hard dh doing 6-7 day weeks at times to pay the arrears we had accrued with fuel, council tax, mortgage etc. We are now almost clear (end of the year).
Now our mortgage has increased and our gas and electric meaning we have to find an extra £300 a month.

The final kicker, we've received a bill from tax credits saying they had overpaid us by £1500 last year due to all the overtime we had put in following covid and we need to repay it.

The effects of Sunaks financial mismanagement are still affecting people. I'm fucked off with him and the rest of the fucking circus, the tories are all in it for themselves and he is amongst the worst.

Let’s face it the lick down was urged on Johnson by the scientists, the media and all political parties and especially Labour. Starmer urge red longer lockdowns. So right or wrong don’t blame Johnson.

Clearly some still do, they always will, critical thinking is not their forte.

Croque · 24/10/2022 18:59

The main concern I have is that because of the fact that he has not been elected (and probably because he is brown), expectations may be set too high for him both inside and outside the party.

He is inheriting a much worse mess than he would have done two months ago. Rather than bleating on about wanting an election immediately, I hope they give him a chance to try and sort out the mess.

I don't know if anyone is interested, but in ROI there is a (stable enough) coalition. They agreed to rotate the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and that will happen in December.
I think it's great that ROI Taoiseach on the rotation will be Indian and Gay, called Leo Varadkar, who is in a relationship with a highly respected hospital consultant, and he is a doctor himself. Two Indian PMs on either side of the Irish Sea.
But that little country is streets ahead of the UK anyway. Put huge investment into education and has a huge pharma and computer industry, amongst others that takes advantage of good corporate tax rates and a highly educated work force.
I know where I'd rather be.

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 18:30

Self preservation? By installing Sunak - how many red wallers or blue wallers will vote for a billionaire banker do you suppose? How many of Johnson 18M voters are going to vote for the guy that stabbed Johnson in the back and plunged the party into chaos? Do you actually think Sunak stands ANY chance whatsoever winning a GE? Especially after the cuts he is planning and implementing as we speak. It is for the birds.

Most people think it is a stitch up - and they are not wrong.

Perhaps he should just keep spending money we don't have?

Worriedddd · 24/10/2022 19:09

If the Tories are smart they would call a GE lose then pin the misery on labour. There's no fixing this quickly there's no more free money to hand out. Our government printed a trillion quid and the interest payments on that are rising.

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 19:10

It is threads like this that make me realise that people have absolutely no idea what Rishi Sunak actually stands for, or the severe cuts that are now coming directly their way. Completely oblivious to the agenda he has very clearly set out.

RishyWashy · 24/10/2022 19:12

This.

UnCivil · 24/10/2022 19:13

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 16:50

The simple fact is Mangly Sunak has no mandate whatsoever to be PM, he had only been in government for five minutes, he barely has any experience. It certainly is not acceptable not to me, not to the party or the 18 million voters.

Don’t worry though - and hold your hats - because this has been a total stitch up from beginning to end and the fur is now really going to fly.

I take no pleasure saying that.

What 18m voters are you the official spokesperson for?

BtW Sunak has a larger constituency majority than either BoJo or Truss.

More spending.. markets reacting making it worse. How do you do it

@Stars71 you’re hilarious! I thought you were serious. You had me going for a bit😀

You just carry on laughing at being a racist.

HRTQueen · 24/10/2022 19:15

I’m just glad it isn’t Johnson back in no.10 no doubt he is plotting his return after the next GE

we need some stability

and a British Asian guy my family can hardly believe it (more are Tories anyway but even those who are not are feeling proud)

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 19:15

IstillloveU · 24/10/2022 19:06

Perhaps he should just keep spending money we don't have?

Who do you think is going to foot the bill?
Sunak's billionaire club?
The oil companies making billions?

Truss planned to grow our way out, but she recognised people will need help to get through the winter and she failed miserably. Boris was planning to continue the support and try and hope we can pay it back another day. Sunak's policy is to rip up all support and slash and burn. He won't be charging BP a penny though.

The spreadsheets are the guiding star - and I am sorry but the posters on here are going to be screaming blue murder when it finally dawns on them the reality of our new banker PM.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 24/10/2022 17:46

It didn't though (I am not a labour supporter) Truss being elected is similar to the Blair/Brown handover.

This is removed again. Truss did what she said she would do when she was elected, that is democracy, elect someone to do what they say. The moment she was removed democracy failed.

Again I get the sentiment. But no party will ever vote for it when in power. Why would they? This applies to all parties. So we are stuck with it

Good point. People don't seem to realise that we're not the only country up shit creek but we're the only country who had a duo who caused mayhem in just 41 days. It's brave of him to try to bloody clean up this mess. I'd have walked away and let people stew in the mess. It's not as if he needs the money!

UnCivil · 24/10/2022 19:19

MayThe4th · 24/10/2022 17:28

I’m sick to the back teeth of hearing about it.

Rishy is PM. For the next two years at the very least. And as things currently stand labour are unelectable because they have no policies. Keir Starmer actually said on BBC yesterday that he wouldn’t divulge his manifesto. Anyone who has already decided to vote for a party with 0 policies is an idiot.

And no. “He’s not going to tell us what his manifesto is because the tories would steal them” is absolute bollocks. If he had any policies, then he would tell us what they are. But he’s too busy saying that he’s not a tori so that’s all that matters. Well it isn’t.

I have never voted for either of them. But while some tori voters will not vote Tori, a lot won’t vote labour either. So don’t be surprised if they don’t win the next election.

What’s the point in announcing an ELECTION manifesto if there is no General ELECTION?
