Did you claim furlough? Be careful with your argument, if you benefitted from any concessions, during lock down.

You didn't 'claim' furlough, you were forced into it by your employer.

Clinically vulnerable should have isolated and locked down. Healthy people should have been told you are going to have to work.

Kicking the can down the road of money printing and low interest rates after the 2008 crash. The interventionist policies make the recovery much more painful and expensive. The average age of death for COVID was 83 , higher than the average life expectancy in total . We fucked up the entire economy for that.

It's very easy in hindsight to say what should have happened.

I’m genuinely interested , how is it that the media is reporting that his wife didn’t pay taxes in Uk, but people here are saying she did. Which is it ? She did or she didn’t .
If she didn’t , isn’t that a criminal offence?

You are right that tax avoidance - not paying tax when you're required by law to do so - is a crime under UK law.

What's not a crime is not paying tax you're not legally obliged to pay. If the law doesn't require Mrs Sunak (or anyone else) to pay taxes, then she's done nothing wrong if she's not paying tax. Likewise, if she's only required to pay minimal tax and she pays that but nothing else, she still hasn't done anything wrong.

So if the legally required amount of tax to pay is 0, it can be the case that both the following statements are true:

  • someone didn't pay tax in the UK; and
  • someone paid all the taxes they were legally obliged to pay.

He came second to Liz Truss in a very recent party-wide vote for leader

He came first with MP's though. Conservative members voted for Truss, and they were wrong. Just like Labour members were wrong when they voted for Jeremy Corbyn. Unfortunately members of political parties often have agendas which the general electorate don't buy into. Too many old white conservative members got what they voted for. I know quite a few young conservatives, and yes they do exist, who all voted for Sunak.

Saying that somebody isn't English when they were BORN in England and LIVE in England - but just happen to be of Asian heritage - is racist.

Of course it is. It's out and proud racism.

What does this even mean??

And 'virtue signalling'? Why don't you go all out and call me a Guardian-reading, tofu-eating member of the woke-erati, you know you want to. 😂

As you want to call me a Daily Mail reading, gammon.

‘Coronation’, hardly 🙄

100% a coronation - Just to say the Conservative party is up in arms. The people that do the grunt work of fundraising, leaflets, door knocking - the grass roots. Seething

In the first year of COVID, even those who are weren't clinically vulnerable were dying plus we knew so little about the virus and had no vaccines.

He had to do what was needed at the time. People really do have short memories.

No the ons stastitics say the average of death from COVID up until Jan 2021 so the height of the pandemic was 83!!! Which is higher than the total life expectancy of all people. It was mass hysteria and bullshit.

Blossomtoes · 24/10/2022 15:40

So I will come together with my fellow Labour supporters and also demand an election

Your fellow Labour supporters? You wanted “the big man”, aka Johnson yesterday and nearly drove us all demented with your goady posts. You must think we’ve got the memories of goldfish.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 14:45

I refer you to my earlier post:

you may not remember but a significant number of Tories cried 'this is undemocratic' when Gordon Brown succeeded Blair. Boris Johnson at the time wrote an article for the Telegraph saying it was a "palace coup" and a "North Korean" move that "trampled on the democratic will of the British people."

This kind of misunfderstanding of the system crosses party lines, in my experience. Lots of people don't understand how it works, or why.

Quick guide for anyone struggling with the tax issue.

I agree. You (general you, not specifically you!) don't have to like him or want him as PM. But it's still historic that we've finally got a non-white leader and I think we can all note that, regardless of who it is.

I am POC. The problem is that Tory PoC's are often worse than the old white men. Because they have to prove themselves. Like Priti Patel and Suella. I hope Rishi proves me wrong.

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 15:41

Blossom Johnson might well be hated by you dear but at least he has a mandate.

Yes, and most (civilised) countries did offer support during lockdowns, so it's not just Rishi and the UK who are now struggling because of the billions paid out. And the UK, like most countries came in for criticism in not supporting the self-employed enough, so again, always look at what happens here in an international context rather than just criticising (and I should add, I'm self employed).

I'm not a staunch Tory but think that Rishi is probably the best on offer right now so I'm pleased Boris and Penny bowed out to let him be PM rather than doing a re-run of the Rishi/Liz voting (which was down to grassroot members; otherwise Rishi was ahead).

oakleaffy · 24/10/2022 15:42

sst1234 · 24/10/2022 14:13

Buckle up people. Now it’s time to pay for Rishi’s largesse when he borrowed and printed half a trillion pounds so that you could stay at home and bake banana bread and watch Netflix. Don’t remember anyone in these quarters complaining why healthy people were locked at home while the economy was being destroyed. Why so much rage at Rishi now?

The furlough was scandalous.
So unfair on those who had to work through it.

AdoraBell · 24/10/2022 15:42

@DownNative I haven’t bothered, because it would just stress DH. I am very much an outsider, never been accepted, so I can look on with amusement at the arrogant individual while he pontificates on the world. Like the time he was pleased, as a school governor, that the school started either issuing or prescribing the morning after pil. He actually said “ it causes infertility so no more single mothers”

Then a few years later he was in tears when SIL, not married and still living at home, became one of those disgraceful single mothers

I’ve only seen him about 4 times in the last 25-ish years. And DH doesn’t put up with his BS.

It's the manifesto though isn't it. They were elected on a specific manifesto but that has changed with every subsequent leader so it would actually be appropriate to have an election.

This.

People are aware they vote for the MP but you also know that if X gets in then Y will be PM. Of course it matters who is the party leader. To suggest otherwise is poppycock. It matters who represents us on the world stage and it is crucial that we all get a chance to vote on the party's policies.

It's also no good saying manifestos aren't legally binding blah blah blah. They're not but it does give you an idea of all stances on lots of things that matter to the electorate. If they are totally meaningless why not do away with them altogether? We'll just guess who to vote for or close our eyes and put a cross against any name. You just can't keep having new PMs with new ideas/policies that change on the whim of the governing party.

Until there is a GE and RS has (or has not in which case it will be irrelevant) a mandate from the public there will not be an end to this infighting and drama.

balalake · 24/10/2022 15:42

There won't be a general election. I'd like one but it won't happen until 2024 or even January 2025.

Rishi Sunak seems the least worst option available, just hope he does get rid of some of his cabinet such as Jacob Rees-Mogg. He will also be someone who when representing the UK abroad will not be the embarrassment that the serial liar Boris Johnson is or look stupid as Liz Truss did.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2022 15:38

You didn't 'claim' furlough, you were forced into it by your employer.

Oh how awful, being financially assisted, during a global pandemic. How utterly selfish of the government to have helped to pay your mortgage and bills. Shameful.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 24/10/2022 15:43

@Crimsoncupcakes Apologies, my post above should have stated "tax evasion" not "tax avoidance". Tax avoidance is reducing the amount of tax you're legally obliged to pay by legal means. Tax evasion is illegally not paying tax you're required by law to pay.

Gordon Brown?
Inadequate chancellors the crowned as unelected PM.
There is the precedent.
