This is not democracy.

Who says that all furloughed people wanted to be furloughed? I sure as fuck didn’t want to be!

The point about lockdown was to stop people dying of covid and to stop the NHS being (even more than they were) overwhelmed. Furlough was necessary for people to survive financially. So the conclusion of you not wanting to be furloughed seems to be that you didn't want lockdown.

High taxation Rishi. The middle can be prepared to be squeezed even more.

Yup, I suspect so.

Truss has left us back where we started, but with an even bigger hole to fill. Sunak will fill it with money from the middle.

Expect that HSC Levy to go back on pretty quicko.

Fairislefandango · 24/10/2022 15:31

All the 'this is democracy akshully' people would be singing a different tune if it were the Labour party playing pass the parcel with the keys to No 10.

I doubt it, because they are just stating a fact. I can't stand the Tories or Labour and have no love for Johnson, Truss, Sunak, Starmer or any of the rest of them. None of that changes the fact that you don't vote for a prime minister.

Saying that somebody isn't English when they were BORN in England and LIVE in England - but just happen to be of Asian heritage - is racist.

Exactly.

"Yvette Cooper doesn't know what a woman is.
When asked if she would define a woman on Radio 4, she replied that she wouldn't go down that rabbit hole."

How does that equate to not knowing what a woman is?
In fact, it was Rishi Sunak who, when asked, was unable to define a woman.
As for Penny Mordaunt...!

Crimsoncupcakes · 24/10/2022 15:32

I’m genuinely interested , how is it that the media is reporting that his wife didn’t pay taxes in Uk, but people here are saying she did. Which is it ? She did or she didn’t .
If she didn’t , isn’t that a criminal offence?

LattePetalsPurple · 24/10/2022 15:32

I don’t think any party is now electable.

Labour are not fit for any purpose, with their attitude to women, increasing taxation, and Europe.

Conservatives have given us multi millionaire/ billionaires, with no talk of saving us from enormous racketeering energy bills.

None are fit for purpose

RishyWashy · 24/10/2022 15:32

Lalalolol · 24/10/2022 15:30

He didnt. Covid did. Would you prefer pound taking Liz? Markets have reacted positively to Rishi being PM.

He just got elected today. Did Bojo called for elections the day he got elected? Or is it that Rishi's skin colour making you see things differently this time?

Not covid. His response to covid.

He didn’t get elected that’s the whole fucking point - he was picked behind closed doors by the men in grey suits. He lost!!!

RishyWashy · 24/10/2022 15:32

Unless Rishi is covid. In which case, covid did.

I entirely agree. I am totally done.

Blossomtoes · 24/10/2022 15:33

which of them admit to knowing what a woman is atm? Apart from the Tories

Last time I looked Mordaunt, Nokes, Miller and Blunt were Tories, they’re not GC and at least have the honesty to admit it. Johnson and Truss would say anything they thought would advantage them. Anyone thinking the Tories are any better than any other party on this issue is delusional. Just look at what’s happened on their watch. They don’t give a fuck about women.

You know - setting aside politics, state of the country etc etc, for just one small moment:

Rishi Sunak is the only leader in Europe who is from an ethnic minority, a person of colour.

Just scrolling through the European council, most are old white men. A couple of token women. I am assuming they are all Christian. No-one of colour.

I think that for this alone we should have a small celebration that it is possible in this country to have an ethnic minority leader.

I agree. But we must never see any positive; running around screaming as if our hair is on fire is the only acceptable response to anything, apparently.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 15:34

He came second to Liz Truss in a very recent party-wide vote for leader.

Now he has been selected as leader after the resignation of Truss.

He is leader of the biggest party in Parliament, so de facto Prime Minister.

I think YABU to some extent. This is how the British party system works. Party members and the parliamentary party select the party leader according to the individual party rules. This would happen whether the party was in office or in opposition.

YANBU to think a General Election is in order though. But not for the reasons you have put forth.

Agree 100% with this. It is actually an amazing thing, something the country should be proud of, regardless of the politics (I'm not a Conservative supporter and would much rather have Starmer as PM).

WeepingSomnambulist · 24/10/2022 15:30

What are you talking about?

Making a judgement about someone because of the colour of their skin is racism.

To say that an English person is not really English because they have brown skin, is racist. You're deciding they cannot be english because they're not white, and only white people can really be english.

That is the definition of racism. Saying that Sunak is not English because his skin is brown is literally the definition of racism.

Not Good is it when people call you a bigot, at the drop of a hat? Amazing how a woman and ethnic minority PM have caused such uproar. One could almost believe Labour voters aren't as entwined with equality and diversity. As one might presume.

mathanxiety · 24/10/2022 15:35

Rishi Sunak is the only leader in Europe who is from an ethnic minority, a person of colour.

He's the second person of Asian descent to lead a European parliamentary democracy.

Clinically vulnerable should have isolated and locked down. Healthy people should have been told you are going to have to work.

Kicking the can down the road of money printing and low interest rates after the 2008 crash. The interventionist policies make the recovery much more painful and expensive. The average age of death for COVID was 83 , higher than the average life expectancy in total . We fucked up the entire economy for that.

In the first year of COVID, even those who are weren't clinically vulnerable were dying plus we knew so little about the virus and had no vaccines.

He had to do what was needed at the time. People really do have short memories.

MangyInseam · 24/10/2022 15:36

A party can change its leader as many times as they like - it is only tradition that means the PM is the leader of the biggest parliament, it is not law - The King (I just wrote Queen and had to delete) can choose who ever he wants to be PM. The only stipulation is it has to be the person who can manage the majority of MP's.

I think this is an important point that a lot of people don't understand.

Both Boris and Truss failed in the end because they could not control or satisfy the MPs. That's what the PM has to do - have the confidence of the MPs to lead the house.

If he or she can't, the party can try a new leader, and if there is no one who can lead, then you get a GE.

That's how the system works, and as much as it may seem unsatisfying I am not convinced that any others work better, and many are clearly worse.

Kissingfrogs25 · 24/10/2022 15:36

Sunak is deluded if he seriously believes the party or country will get behind him, he has no right to be there at all. Squatting in No10.
The party and half the MPs voted against him, the country has had no say whatsoever.

We are in uncharted territory where the financial markets and media appear to now be running the country.

I agree. You (general you, not specifically you!) don't have to like him or want him as PM. But it's still historic that we've finally got a non-white leader and I think we can all note that, regardless of who it is.

No it's not. That's like me saying all those of you complaining on this thread are racist. Don't you like the colour of Sunak's skin? You love to just call out racism because it makes you feel superior. You virtue signallers never fail to trip yourselves up.

What does this even mean??

And 'virtue signalling'? Why don't you go all out and call me a Guardian-reading, tofu-eating member of the woke-erati, you know you want to. 😂

The only problem is he doesn’t have the confidence of the house or party. Hundreds of them voted for someone else.
