Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

Well, in political terms I think that we can finally say goodbye to Boris.
Sunak can just about hold the Tories together until the next GE, by which time the political world will have moved on, and Boris will be nothing but a putrid whiff of sleaze and corruption.
Not even the Tory Party will want him back.
And for that I am so, so grateful.

Johnson will huff and puff a lot about having another go, but come the GE and losing his seat (if he stands for reelection) I doubt he'll bother to come back to politics.

He can't easily just take someone else's safe seat either. It has to be approved by the local member / the party itself and they may be keen to see the back of him too and not give him an easy in.

Besides which, he'll probably make more money outside politics and he needs to fund Carrie's spending habits.

He looks like one of those sad old men, who have suddenly realised that starting a new family and doing it all over again with a much younger woman perhaps isn't the dream he thought.

ERG not supporting a particular candidate, just saying they will unite behind whoever gets in.

TokyoSushi · 24/10/2022 12:13

So the ERG not moving as a bloc then? So what are they doing, just nominating/voting for whoever they like and then publicly saying they'll unite behind whoever wins?

They seem very generous/conciliatory, which is most unlike them, interesting...

scaredoff · 24/10/2022 12:13

greenhousegal · 24/10/2022 11:44

Be great if the ERG just fecked off and formed their own Brexit loving Far Right party. (UKIPERG) But FPTP and all that.....

Which is why the argument that FTPT is better than PR because it stops extremist parties from having any power is nonsense.

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 12:14

Pathetic ERG cop-out, but I guess that's truly it for Mordaunt and her "90".

They are fairly split by the sound of it, yes.

Tbh thats a good thing as it means the block power of the ERG perhaps isn't what it was.

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 12:16

I don’t mind I’m too relieved it wasn’t a backing for Mordaunt

TokyoSushi · 24/10/2022 12:16

Ah, there we go, Francois right at the very end, we will 'attempt' to give whoever wins our full support...

titchy · 24/10/2022 12:19

He'll sit in the Lords surely?

They should have all bogged off to UKIP years ago, and their party maybe wouldn’t be in this mess.

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 12:27

ERG are scary. Party within a party. Hopefully they'll all lose their seats at the next GE too.

Who actually votes for JRM??

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 12:29

George Freeman - who publicly backed Mordaunt - is calling for her to pick up the phone and do a deal with Rishi according to the BBC.

This I’ve long pondered who votes for JRM & the others in that cabal of hell.

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2022 12:32

Tony AR IsntTony105
Mark Francois: The ERG have spoken to both candidates but were unable to agree to endorse either of them...😂😂😂

The ERG have decided they will unite behind whoever wins.

The Tory mess is deeper than even we imagined..

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 12:34

Ian Duncan Smith throws his name behind Rishi.

Some one has to honour him first...

...no guarentee that anyone will!

(He likely will get one but its not a dead cert. He could in theory be blocked if he's out of favour at the time).

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 12:39

Can you imagine what it's like being at an ERG meeting? Chimps' tea party only much angrier, and with more racism.

He’s got a big family 🤣

All those MPs holding back are just making the situation worse. There is no way they don’t know who they are backing at this stage. They are just prolonging the uncertainty for a chance to have a few seconds in the spotlight as important people

stuckdownahole · 24/10/2022 12:50

Mordant, with 28 public backers, is currently in the position of a man who has boasted of having an enormous knob and has now been challenged to get it out and show everyone in the pub.

My understanding is that they don't actually have to chose one or the other

User123758 · 24/10/2022 13:06

No they don’t but they could end this and end the uncertainty. The pound will rise.

Happy to be corrected about this, but I think in order for Boris to be "honoured" all the living previous PMs have to as well...

I think that's the sticking point.

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 13:11

For the sake of 50 minutes, I think they'll keep quiet.

I can't believe Penny isn't conceding. Isn't she just making it embarrassing for herself?

The MPs don't want her, so even if she scapes 100 (unlikely) and wins the members vote, she won't have the support of most MPs. She, the party, the opposition and the country know this.

Rishi has the required number. Boris is out. The one who is 'prolonging' it is Mordaunt (maybe egged on by Leadsom). The longer she goes on though, the smaller the job...
