Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

I'm glad Johnson pulled out. Will Mordant withdraw too? I hope the country and economy can settle under Sunak.

I would prefer a general election though

Blossomtoes · 24/10/2022 10:06

The problem is that if the Conservative party puts off members who accordingly don't renew, then it becomes entirely funded by donations from wealthy individuals.

It already is. It doesn’t make much from subscriptions. The over 65 rate is £5 a year.

stuckdownahole · 24/10/2022 10:06

Good point @Blossomtoes

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 24/10/2022 10:10

I’ve been a Tory party member (I joined specifically to vote against Johnson in the 2019 leadership contest) and a Labour Party member. It’s considerably cheaper to be the former. (Neither seem to have many checks/balances in place - they just take your money and add you to their email list).

I can see Chope's dilemma - the putrid old dinosaur is now in the terrible position of having to choose between a woman and a brown man. Must be horrendous for him.

That alone makes my day tbh.

Christopher Chope is the very dregs of the Tory Barrel.

The LD send you continual begging letters for donations because they don't get union fees and they don't get big money donations.

Which is why I think we should adopt a closer model to other European countries where election campaigning comes out of a state budget only which is equal for everyone.

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 10:37

It's far far cheap to be a member of Labour or Conservatives than to join a trade union.

Conservative - £25 pa
Labour - £56 pa

Unions seem to cost about £20 per month Confused

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 10:41

£12 pa to join the Lib Dems

L1ttledrummergirl · 24/10/2022 10:41

You get a lot more for your money in a union than just party membership (which you can usually opt out of if you want).
Don't conflate that with party membership.

PerkingFaintly · 24/10/2022 10:42

sunnydaytoday0 · 24/10/2022 02:40

The Mail comment piece has described Johnson's decision as "a gesture of wisdom and statesmanship" 😂

So we're still waiting for the "Disgraced former prime minister Boris Johnson..." epithet, then?

Ah but with party membership you can chose the Prime Minster! You can chose one with whatever whacky policies you like.

Seriously though, I get your point regarding membership. If only there was any spare money to join a Trade Union...

Delicious snippet from PA: Gavin Williamson spotted entering Rishi Sunak's office in Westminster... he's been somewhat under the radar of late.... not today.

Oh good god. Guess he's after his old job as chief whip as thats all this school bully is good for.

There is a sense of movement in back Downing St close protection officers moving car’s around its in my opinion going to kick of in the next 10 mins.

Hmm. Someone seems to think, things will happen sooner rather than later today. Do you think Liz Truss had time to unpack?

DeborahVance · 24/10/2022 11:04

If as a result of Boris Johnson fucking off on permanent holiday we no longer have to hear from his sister or his father that will be even better. Sick to death of the entitled chancers.

boys3 · 24/10/2022 11:05

Thanks for the new thread.

where to go next with the titles though? Penny is perhaps the obvious unexpected journey, but Rishi? Children of Hurin territory perhaps.

Journey into Mordor Grin

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 11:28

This is for Kissing.

Sunak is on 179. That is closer to 200....

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 11:35

2.5 hours to go. PM still in the race. BBC says she has 26 nominations. Guido Fawkes says she has 30. PM team says she has over 100.

What time do we think she'll drop out "for the greater goo"?!

Told there will be a statement from the ERG officers at 12.00 on the leadership.

I’m hoping this means Sunak

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 11:41

Mordaunt's camp saying she has '90' and 'it's important members have their say'. Seems pitifully desperate.

greenhousegal · 24/10/2022 11:44

Be great if the ERG just fecked off and formed their own Brexit loving Far Right party. (UKIPERG) But FPTP and all that.....

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 11:47

Yes definitely unease in the Mordaunt camp - half an hour ago they “had the 100”, now it’s “we’ve definitely got 90”.

I do wonder how many Tory MPs are making themselves unavailable right now. A few convenient lunchtime meetings so as to dodge the incessant phone calls.

KonTikki · 24/10/2022 11:58

Well, in political terms I think that we can finally say goodbye to Boris.
Sunak can just about hold the Tories together until the next GE, by which time the political world will have moved on, and Boris will be nothing but a putrid whiff of sleaze and corruption.
Not even the Tory Party will want him back.
And for that I am so, so grateful.
