Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

Mordaunt supporters still saying she has 100 nominations. Hard to believe anyone now.

Just seen this on the Guardian’s live politics blog - it says Boris did have enough MP nominations to stand in the leadership contest, if he’d wanted to.

It makes no sense to me, then, why he withdrew. Out of him, Mordaunt and Sunak, I think he’d be most popular with the party members if the contest then went to a members’ vote.

I can only assume he withdrew because he wanted to prove to himself he could still get the support he needed to be PM again, but he thinks now isn’t the right time to be PM as he’ll have a lot of challenging issues on his plate to deal with! So he’s happy for Sunak or Mordaunt to clean up the current mess of issues as best they can, then when everyone’s fed up of Sunak or Mordaunt, he’ll stand again for party leader in 2024 (or before!) and sweep to victory. Ugh.

Maybe he decided he simply couldn't be arsed with it.

That is great, another third hand confirmation from an ally of Johnson that he had the numbers, based on someone in the 1922 Committee who won't confirm that himself.

This is all about Johnson and his future credentials. As it is, his public backing never got off the ground.

It says someone from the 1922 Committee claims that's the case. We'll never actually know.

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 13:59

Mordaunt withdraws.

Surprise, fucking surprise.

LexMitior · 24/10/2022 13:59

It's all about the rep of Johnson so he does not look like he a friendless loon with all headbangers and that he retains a positive rep in the Conservative Party.

I imagine a lot of his followers feel like he has mucked them about for his own ego.

MordUnt has conceded

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 24/10/2022 13:59

Mordant has withdrawn - BBC.

Words · 24/10/2022 13:59

Sorry for typo there...

MarshaBradyo · 24/10/2022 14:00

Yes. Tg for that

TokyoSushi · 24/10/2022 14:01

Gosh, at 13:59 on my clock.

hesbeingabitofadick · 24/10/2022 14:01

Good Luck Rishi...you're going to need it especially with the ERG nutters lurking in the shadows

hesbeingabitofadick · 24/10/2022 14:01

TokyoSushi · 24/10/2022 14:01

Gosh, at 13:59 on my clock.

Cutting it fine. Xmas Grin

Hmmph · 24/10/2022 14:01

Talk about leaving it until the last minute.

Clearly she was lying about 100 votes too.

LIER.

SleeplessInEngland · 24/10/2022 14:02

So... who wants to bet if Sunank will still be PM by the next election?

BlessMyCottonSocks · 24/10/2022 14:02

Time to get on with the job. Difficult times ahead.

Just messing with us. Tired old tactics and annoying

sunnydaytoday0 · 24/10/2022 14:04

Why are they banging on the desks and cheering. They should feel embarrassed that they're even in this situation.

She must love all the attention that waiting until the last minute garners.

CaveMum · 24/10/2022 14:06

If she’s conceded then she didn’t get to 100.

Prime Minister Sunak it is.

GCAcademic · 24/10/2022 14:08

Mordaunt's statement was really weird. Seemed worded to rile up the membership . . .

Ohhhhladz · 24/10/2022 14:08

They should just change the Conservative Party leadership contest rules so it's like the Miss World Pageant - if for any reason the winner can't discharge her/his duties, the first runner-up steps in.

MissHavishamsMouldyOldCake · 24/10/2022 14:09

I'm not sure RICH being people's overwhelming impression of the PM is going to help him in the months ahead. We shall see!

Rishi to speak at 2.30pm

Speculation on whether they go to the King this evening or wait until the morning so he can do a Downing Street speech in the daylight!

We await the news on the Cabinet now.

xalo · 24/10/2022 14:10

Thank god.
Now hope if she gets a position it's as far away from any influence on women as possible.
