Continuation from last thread, for those of us following all the action on Monday.

And yes I'm a LOTR fan, so tried to continue the theme in the thread title 😉

I can’t see it makes much difference where Hancock is for all the use he is. I see his local party chairman is looking forward to seeing him eat a kangaroo’s penis so he obviously thinks it’s a good thing.

Nadine got away with doing I'm a Celeb and didn't Penny Mordaunt do Splash? Plus of course George Galloway did Big Brother as a sitting MP though he wasn't a representative of a major party at that point.

Dorries was suspended for appearing on the show if I remember rightly.

GreenLunchBox · 01/11/2022 12:30

His poor kids. Have they not been through enough mortification

54isanopendoor · 01/11/2022 12:52

If Handcock had any chance of clawing back some credibility he's throwing it away now.

sunnydaytoday0 · 02/11/2022 12:10

Good solid performance by Starmer at PMQs.

Starmer asked some very relevant questions about immigration. Sunak once again started going on about Brexit and Corbyn. Looks weak.

Brexit is a disaster and Corbyn isn't relevant. Sunak definitely looks weak.l

sunnydaytoday0 · 02/11/2022 12:37

The Tory benches seemed quite muted and weren't even shouting down Blackford like they usually do. Morale clearly not good, and this is before the Autumn statement. I think the Sunak honeymoon is well and truly over.

6 nil to Starmer.

Is it Sunak's fault? Partly. His colleagues, notably Braverman, are letting him down.

Also, the Corbyn card looks played out. Might be good for the faithful but few others.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/11/2022 13:43

It says quite a lot about where the Tories are at if their main attack on Labour relates to a leader who has been gone for quite a long time. Poor performance from Sunak today. He'll be toast at the next election if that's the best that he can muster.

walkinginsunshinekat · 02/11/2022 14:12

Yes Sunak was torn apart by Starmer, even my tory voting cousin thought so too.

Sunak u-turns on Cop27 visit and ALL his election campaign promises including the 2019 GE manifesto - every single pledge up for review, according to No10.

Lets hope we don't hear anymore about Starmer and how weak/lack of integrity/honesty IF he u-turn on Single Market.

Though i expect, once again, the rules applied to Labour, will be torn up for the Tories/Sunak.

SleeplessInEngland · 02/11/2022 14:20

For a politician who trades so heavily on a 'cool under pressure' guise, it's striking how often Starmer seems to lose his cool in these kind of debates. Did it in the leadership contest too.

SleeplessInEngland · 02/11/2022 14:22

^ Sunak, not Starmer! (insert your own 'what's the difference' joke)

Blossomtoes · 02/11/2022 14:22

I think the parliamentary Tory party knows it’s run out of steam and doesn’t really want to deal with all this shit. I reckon a lot of them are longing to have the plaster ripped off in a GE and spend some time on the opposition benches heckling while they watch Labour try to sort it out.

LexMitior · 02/11/2022 14:35

@SleeplessInEngland - you are totally right: I do not think he can handle being challenged and Starmer is needling him. Very effective, playing the man and the ball

borntobequiet · 02/11/2022 14:39

I couldn’t believe it when he hauled out Corbyn again. Well I could, but it was still a surprise.

This is what I don't get...Surely Sunak's biggest opportunity was calling an election immediately. He's get a bounce (because he wasn't Truss) and there'd be a bounce for calling it (because having no mandate looks politically insane) and it would be the morally right thing to do. The polls would start recovering for the Tories. Things would get much tenser for Labour. Yes, Labour would probably win but they'd be dealing with the crap and it's only going to get crapper and the Tories are going to be blamed for all of it. Hiring Braverman was an enormous error but there are so many cabinet incompetents. Removing the whip from Hancock only draws attention to his ridiculousness.

Dweebie · 02/11/2022 16:20

Agree someone needs to advise Sunak to stop harping on about Corbyn. It's just so outdated and doesn't stand up to any scrutiny, given his own support of Johnson. It just highlights how little ammo he has.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 02/11/2022 16:27

Sunak was never going to be able to call an immediate GE because of the risk the party would be eviscerated. That's a choice you can possibly make if you're looking at maybe 250 or 300 seats, and might benefit from a bit of time to lick your wounds. That is not where the Tories are. Given the need for parliamentary approval, it would literally be turkeys voting for Christmas.

Plus he's ambitious, he wants a go at the job and this is his time. If the Tories get massacred he might get the boot, and even if he didn't that's a long time hanging around in opposition potentially. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

Blossomtoes · 02/11/2022 16:31

If the Tories get massacred in a GE he’d definitely get the boot. One lost election and you’re out. They’re brutally ruthless.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 02/11/2022 16:36

I would think so. Bear in mind as well the membership aren't that into him either. He really has no basis to think he'd be able to be PM any other time than now.

When...

LexMitior · 02/11/2022 17:39

People are not going to forgive hundreds of pounds extra in costs a month. Even if Sunak had the best personality and demeanor in the world it would still be a very difficult ask.

Things can get worse. The chances of them getting better are tiny. Yes there will be some isolated wealthy Tory voters who won't be affected but tax is going up. If Osborne did 80 per cent on the public sector and 20 per cent on tax during austerity then this time is 50 50.

And that is before we get to mortgage rates. Nothing to cheer about

LexMitior · 09/11/2022 13:00

Sunak got another kicking at PMQs.

I think that will be a Labour attack - weak decisions by Sunak which appease the powerful but impoverish the people.

Alexandra2001 · 09/11/2022 14:16

Sunaks defence of his decision to appoint Williamson, sound much like Bojo's "i did not know there were any parties"

... ffs Sunak was told there was an allegation against GW, yet apparently didn't ask what it was! yeah right!

Williamson, has been sacked twice before, once on grounds of national security... so how on earth was he deemed suitable to be in Govt?

He should lose his Knighthood.
