Would you vote conservative again?

I wouldn’t vote conservative again after the total shambles that have been the last 12 years. They’re constantly infighting rather than sorting out the economy and have left the NHS in a total mess. No care for people suffering from the cost of living crisis

I'm politically homeless. The tories repulse me (having previously voted for them - not last time though!) But can I really vote for a party who don't know what a woman is? If they're was a GE tomorrow, I genuinely don't know what I'd do.

JabberwockyPie · 22/10/2022 20:15

It depends on what the alternatives are. Ideally no, but undoubtedly it will be a contest between labour and Tory. In which case I'd vote Tory. A new better party that a majority could get behind would be amazing. But it won't happen.

Depends on my opinion of the relative merits of the manifesto at the time and the character and composition of the opposing parties.
It’s interesting that people on this thread are questioning why some posters would state they would “never vote Labour” whilst stating they would never vote conservative?

At the end of the last Labour Gov, the incumbents had crippled the NHS and education sector with billions of pounds of PFI debt that is still in place today, introduced working tax credit which has made the uk one of the lowest wage & subsequently lowest growth economies in Europe (& ironically reduced the power of the unions!) allowing business to be permanently subsidized by the state, decimated education with their ideological nonsense around SEND & inclusion leading to the closure of 100’s of special schools and taken the country into an illegal war the ramifications of which are still felt today. I could go on but I won’t.

But that was then …. The current Labour Party have a different manifesto, different character and different people so to say “I’ll never vote Labour again” based on what happened last time is equally as idiotic as saying “I’ll never vote conservative again” after this shower of shit.

British politics would be infinitely improved if the general public was taught to actually think and critically evaluate rather than endless repetition of stereotypical partisan nonsense. if your vote can never be changed, then you are part of the problem not the solution.

Mardyface · 22/10/2022 20:37

The Tories are not actually following through on any of their manifesto promises. Not the ones they were elected on. I don't believe anyone currently likely to lead the party has the intention or the ability to do it either even if I thought their policies were any good.

Based on past personal performance any member of the shadow cabinet is more trustworthy and therefore likely to keep manifesto promises, more likely to keep to the law, and less likely to indulge in corrupt behaviour than any single person in the current govt. You may not be a Labour voter but if you disagree with that you are just not paying attention.

You can argue the merits of past Labour governments/ organisation all you want, but there is no solid argument for the current government's competency or honesty over the current Labour party. Frankly I'm not sure how they could possibly be worse.

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 20:46

Muminabun · 22/10/2022 15:45

Yes. Better than Labour despite being shambolic. The left is now far left and I don’t like identity politics or socialism.

The left is bang in the centre now. It’s a measure of how far right the Tories have moved that anyone would seriously think this.

Fruitbatt · 22/10/2022 20:49

Absolutely there’s no better party.

nether · 22/10/2022 20:50

No, because of the Evusheld debacle.

I think I'm most likely to look for a good independent candidate, as I don't feel able to support any of the parties at present. But if there was none, then I'd go Lib Dem because of the great work by Daisy Cooper

Surely Angela Reynor getting shitfaced and shouting about ‘Tory Scum’ has to be up there doesn’t it? I’d hate for her to have one too many on the international stage.

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 21:11

She wasn’t shitfaced. She was stone cold sober. She wasn’t wrong either.

Crumpleton · 22/10/2022 21:13

I wouldn't vote Labour.
I really don't know what they stand for, whenever I've seen Starmer on TV he's spent his time slagging off the Tory party instead of telling what he would do to fix this shambles of a country....We can clearly see the Tories aren't doing a good job it really doesn't need pointing out every time Starmer opens his mouth....What's the solution, tell us instead of turning the house of commons into a playground and behaving like a group of bickering kids.

I really wanted him to stand up during COVID and say despite differences in party politics we need to pull together to get through this, but no he just bickered and sniped as he still does....it really wears thin.

It seems to me that no matter what party gets in they pretty much all spend their time in office slagging off all that the last party has done during their last 4 years in term....never moving forward always looking back.
We need some real fresh blood but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
Just my opinion.

StoneofDestiny · 22/10/2022 21:17

12 years of Tory chaos. The UK is the laughing stock of the world. The NHS is being destroyed and tall our Public Services are being starved of investment. We just got rid of a corrupt, lying and inept Johnson. Then Tory members chose Truss, a person who had no proven ability in any of the areas necessary to effectively run a country. Truss inflicted on us what Tory voters wanted - massive tax breaks for the rich funded from the pockets of the ordinary working people. Our economy went to the cliff edge as a result.

It's pathetic to even imagine these Tory buffoons are hoping to bring back the amoral, inept, law breaking Johnson who is currently still under investigation for lying to Parliament! Even more pathetic is people saying, 'Labour have no policies', when it's obvious they do - published on the internet for all to see.

This Tory Government has had 12 years to implement policies that would improve the lives of ALL the citizens of the UK. They have not even come close to declaring they want to do that - let alone, implemented anything that would do that.

On paper I should be the ideal Tory voter - pretty financially secure. However - I vote for policies that can be justified morally, ones that have compassion, integrity and the common good informing them.

StoneofDestiny · 22/10/2022 21:24

We can clearly see the Tories aren't doing a good job it really doesn't need pointing out every time Starmer opens his mouth

It does need pointing out every single time because people, like yourself, will still think it's sane to criticise the opposition instead of the people in government who have been getting things wrong for 12 years!

Do you really think the opposition should just sit quietly while the Tories misgovern? 😂😂 Even the Tories could not keep quiet anymore about the chaos their ministers were inflicting on the British public.

edwinbear · 22/10/2022 21:27

@Blossomtoes this is exactly the sort of response that will stop Tories deciding to vote Labour. If the best argument the left can come up with is ‘Tory scum’ and shadow cabinet resorting to playground name calling, it’s not that convincing. I’d like a grown up in charge as opposed to a 5 year old.

If anyone’s still contemplating voting Tory now they’re a lost cause and nothing will budge them.

Even if I thought you were right about Angela Rayner (I don't, she's ace), you are not telling me what about the current government is better than that. Is it their corrupt contracting policies? Their reckless destruction of the economy? Is it because they pay fuel company shareholders' bonuses with tax income while children freeze? Or because they break their own laws? What exactly is better about the Tories than that supposed slip up by ms Rayner?

SecretShipping · 22/10/2022 21:35

My parents are die-hard old school Tories. Cut them, and they bleed blue. They are really, really angry and upset with the Conservative Party. They loathed Brexit, they loathed Boris Johnson and they think that the last few years have proved that the party needs to split.

They do NOT want their vote to be associated with the likes of Patel, Bravermann and Rees Mogg. They were compassionate Conservatives that feel horrified at what the party has become: a hard-right, populist, nasty, fuck-the-poor race to the bottom.

I never thought I'd see the day that my parents were left hoping for a Labour government, but here we are. They approve of Kier Starmer, which helps.

It's a relief that they will now vote Labour, as I've found it harder and harder to associate my kind, lovely folks with a vote for more Tory hell.

edwinbear · 22/10/2022 21:38

@Blossomtoes I absolutely would consider voting Labour at the moment. I can’t stand the shit show that is the Tories at the moment, it’s embarrassing. However, I have 2 DC at private school, as I’ve mentioned on many similar threads.

I’m not a multi millionaire, we haven’t put our heating on yet, we have a variable rate mortgage, I buy ‘Too Good To Go’ bags to keep our food costs down. We just about manage the fees because it’s important to us,. I pay my way when it comes to tax, I’m very firmly in the net contributor bracket. And if I have to pay a bit more income tax at the moment, so be it. But to take even more off me and then deny me the choice to send my kids to private school, after I’ve paid more than my fair share? That’s hard for me to swallow.

Mobiledesktop · 22/10/2022 21:39

My problem with modern Labour is the very high levels of immigration we had when they were last in power. I believe they would repeat this again and bogus asylum approvals would go through the roof.
I'm all for the other policies though.
I belong to the patriotic section of the Labour party that doesn't really exist anymore.

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 21:41

So keep voting Tory @edwinbear. I genuinely don’t care. I’m not here to change anyone’s mind.

Witchofthedales · 22/10/2022 21:41

ilovesooty · 22/10/2022 11:35

I believe that Johnson has been orchestrating his return from the moment he resigned and others have enabled that process.

So do I.

Lily073 · 22/10/2022 21:42

I'd happily vote tactically for the Conservatives to keep Labour out.

edwinbear · 22/10/2022 21:44

I’d happily vote for them - increase my income tax, take my pension tax relief away, increase inheritance tax, increase my NI contributions. But leave my kids education out of it. That’s honestly all I need.

All they’re planning to do is remove private schools’ charitable status. How does that threaten your kids’ education?

The NHS has been in a mess for a long time, including when they were under Labour and the coalition. Until it’s sorted from management down, nothing will change.
‘And a lot of what people call the NHS is actually private medicine.

When Labour left power in 2010, NHS waiting lists were the shortest in NHS history.
