Could the hospital have been wrong?

Hi all,

I'm 36 weeks pregnant.

Just a bit of advice please so yesterday from dinner time I was having period like pains in my back and lower part of my belly and they seem to happen every day 20 minutes so I called the maternity unit because I'm having a elcs and they told me to come in and check me over - they checked me over, there was some mild tightening but my cervix was closed and it was deemed not to be labour, doctor thought it might be baby moving around and stretching my uterus, midwife thought it might be braxton hicks - which was fine I didn't want baby coming yet anyway but it's been happening all through the night and is still happening and it's way more painful than yesterday so I was wondering could they have been wrong?

Should I keep an eye on it? I'm just worried as I don't want to leave it too long and not have a c section but don't want to waste their time again so just thought I'd ask here in case anyone had any advice.

Congratulations amazing news! Enjoy snuggles with your little bundle of joy!...did you get to have the elective section I think you said upthread you wanted? I guess it must have been early labour afterall then?!

They could have been perfectly correct yesterday ( cervic closed, just Braxton Hicks, which are like the body practising contractions but not the start of labour).

Today, everything might have changed. That is the nature of pregnancy.

Stop looking for someone to blame, it's time to take responsibility for your self and your baby.

I literally said on a previous post I didn't mean the hospital was wrong I meant can things change that quickly as I've never laboured before and was worried about the pains I was feeling - they still said they weren't contractions last night so I don't know what they were.

Your post is negative for no reason, hope your day gets better.

I did thank you, they said they'd monitor me for 24 hours and do the elcs in 10 days if I hadn't gone into labour in that time - and then an hour later after they checked my cervix they was like we'll do it now so it was all very fast haha we're recovering now, she's doing really well.

Thank you everyone for all the advice and kind words xx

I say again what I wrote above:

Congratulations on your new bundle of joy! 🌹🎊🎉❣️

I was reading the thread and was about to post, telling you to go back and insist the do a trace because braxton hicks can change into full on labour and very quickly and even though your cervix was closed, because of the braxton hicks, once labour starts, it happens quickly! I had braxton hicks with one of mine and the hospital said nope, it’s braxton hicks, go home. The pain got so intense that I went back and thank God I did because I literally arrived and the midwife stuck me in a room and 10 minutes later I had him!

As a nurse, I always tell people, health care professionals, be they doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, whatever, are human and as such, are fallible. Doctors, even consultants, make mistakes!

Congratulations OP and your new baby girl. x

They can and have been wrong many times. For myself I would decide if they were labor pains or BH by sitting down and putting my feet up. If they were BH they always stopped when I put my feet up. I never went into labor naturally though. I had to be induced but my water broke at 7 months.

AutumnsCrow · 26/10/2022 15:53

Yay! Lovely ending to a thread Flowers

Scarfweather · 26/10/2022 16:04

Oh, absolutely go back and be checked. Both of mine were 3-4 weeks early, both elective c sections.
With the first I called because I had a very slow trickle of water and I knew my waters were going - two nurses I spoke to said ‘it’s not your waters, it would be a big gush’ and they were both wrong. I told them I would like to be checked, went to hospital and confirmed it was fluid and labour was in progress.
The second I had what I would describe as slight cramping and pressure on the bladder every so often. It’s not what I thought it would feel like and I was told it was BH. It wasn’t - it went on all night so was admitted next day in labour and straight in for c section.
Thing is - if your intuition is telling you to have it checked out, have it checked out if only to reassure yourself.
Good luck OP xx

This happened to me, while I was in hospital on bedrest with pre-eclampsia, it was my first child and even though I hadnt had a baby before I knew what they were, I was told it was Braxton Hicks, but I refused to let my DP leave and we snuck to the tv room where an auxilary nurse took pity on us and found us a side room, she gave me a paracetamol and then 4 hours later my consultant appeared and was cross I hadnt been monitored as was meant to be on 4 hourly obs due to the preclampsia...anyway it was a teaching hospital, and he had a flurry of students all around me and he said he was going to examine me, I asked him to wait as I was having a Braxton Hicks...then he puled the curtain around and examined me, got up strode out and said "this lady is 7 cm dilated with dangerously high blood pressure, why hasnt anyone been monitoring her" had the baby soon after and all was fine, but several midwives and nurses told me it was just Braxton Hicks, I felt like you, period pains at regular times and a feeling of filling up with hot water, a flush in my face each time. Trust your instincts on this x
