Could the hospital have been wrong?

Hi all,

I'm 36 weeks pregnant.

Just a bit of advice please so yesterday from dinner time I was having period like pains in my back and lower part of my belly and they seem to happen every day 20 minutes so I called the maternity unit because I'm having a elcs and they told me to come in and check me over - they checked me over, there was some mild tightening but my cervix was closed and it was deemed not to be labour, doctor thought it might be baby moving around and stretching my uterus, midwife thought it might be braxton hicks - which was fine I didn't want baby coming yet anyway but it's been happening all through the night and is still happening and it's way more painful than yesterday so I was wondering could they have been wrong?

Should I keep an eye on it? I'm just worried as I don't want to leave it too long and not have a c section but don't want to waste their time again so just thought I'd ask here in case anyone had any advice.

No harm getting checked again. Tell them.they are stronger and more painful and your worried.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 22/10/2022 14:39

Yes, do go back to get yourself checked.
Just because your cervix was closed yesterday, doesn't mean it's not dilating today, particularly as you're in more pain
Every birth is different
Good luck

How are you now OP?

quietnightmare · 22/10/2022 17:57

You how you feeling now op?

Tezco · 22/10/2022 18:05

Sorry for not updating everyone.

After a bath and some stronger pain killers it has eased off, it's still happening but not as bad and I've downloaded the contraction counter and it seems to think they're practice contractions (braxton hicks? Not sure) but I don't think baby's making an appearance yet.

If they got worse I was gonna call the hospital but was waiting for the car but since they've eased off I'll see what happens.

Pregnancy is confusing haha thank you everyone for your advice, hope you all have a lovely weekend Smile

Another update - they've been quite bad over night kept waking me up and feel more painful, been in bath since 6am with painkillers, and warm drink - happening every 2-4 minutes, stop for 20 minutes and the starts up again, only difference is I went to the toilet a lot more last night so wondering if it could be a uti but had no burning or stinging so unsure.

Appreciate I might not be in labour but bloody hell does it hurt! I'm going into hospital at 12 so they can hopefully figure out what's happening.

Fingers crossed for you. My first labour was a bit like that, really irregular but painful contractions

whateveryouwantmetosay · 23/10/2022 09:13

False labour usually stops, yours isn't. I think you are in early labour. Hopefully hospital was confirm for you.

Axahooxa · 23/10/2022 09:19

Even if they do mind (happens) just be assertive for what you need!

Mummyme87 · 23/10/2022 09:31

Sounds fairly normal of this stage of pregnancy. Regular pain killers and rest up. If they are coming every 5mins laying more than 45secs and taking your breath away persistently for an hour then go back in. If they keep starting and stopping and you’re able to sleep, it’s not labour

rainbowstardrops · 23/10/2022 09:35

Good luck!

whitemats · 23/10/2022 09:55

Hope you're ok OP! I've been having Braxton hicks since about week 18 (now 31) and they're increasingly regular and painful - I'll have a load of them and then they'll go off for a few hours, then will come back. They're so bad I have to breathe through some of them and they have started coming in my back as well - ouch. I've been in for monitoring a couple of times and the midwives and consultant really haven't been concerned, apparently this can happen for second/third babies and when you're a bit older (I'm 37). Always always good to go and get checked if things change, get worse etc

This is exactly what it's like! I'm so sorry you've had them for so long, I've only got three weeks left but they're driving me insane.

I ended up not going to hospital as I managed to get comfy and fall asleep so as PP said it's not labour (thank goodness) but they are so painful when they come, exactly like you describe to be honest.

If they get worse I will get them checked out but hopefully not.

Hope things get better for you - at least we meet the cheeky monkeys causing these issues soon haha

I had exactly the same thing: they even monitored my contractions but ended up saying I was in 'slow' or 'stop start labour ' and it could go on for two weeks! Every day i would have horrendous pains, be sick, have pain every five minutes for hours, but they never got much worse Ans they did eventually go away!

Fingers crossed yours isn't as long!

quietnightmare · 23/10/2022 16:24

Good luck OP. Have you been passing urine more still? Just wondering incase your waters are leaking?

Dishwashersaurous · 23/10/2022 16:40

I had horrendous braxton hicks for about the last six weeks, pretty much every day. Everyone I met was convinced that I was going to have the baby that minute!

Realised that going to sleep was the only thing that helped. So as soon as they started up I got into bed and tried to sleep.

Then the one time they were too painful to sleep through. That was labour!

Good luck

If you suspect a UTI you need to be seen asap. They cause all sorts of problems in pregnancy.

It's not, I called the hospital today for my results and everything's negative.

I think it may just be braxton hicks that are being more painful than usual as it's very similar to PPs experiences so I'm gonna dope up on as much pain killers as I'm allowed and pray the next three weeks goes quickly haha.

Thank you to everyone for commenting, it's really helped.

I hope you feel more comfortable soon

Badnewsoracle · 23/10/2022 21:28

Yes they could be wrong! When I had DD I was told I wasn't having contractions and to go home and come back in the morning and they live my elc c section forward as my cervix was effaced. 3 hours later her foot was dangling in my vagina and I had an emergency c section.

Tezco · 26/10/2022 02:58

I've gone into labour so who knows what it was at the weekend Grin

octoberfarm · 26/10/2022 03:11

Ooh, good luck! I had something called prodromal labor with my first and had on and off (irregular but very painful) contractions for a good week or so before I actually went into labor - it was miserable! The labor itself was pretty quick though - the midwife said every contraction I'd had in the prodromal stage had been working towards the end goal - so hoping it's the same for you! Good luck!

Missikat13 · 26/10/2022 03:17

Good luck! Hope you get to meet your baby soon and it all goes nice and smoothly xxx

Mindthegap725 · 26/10/2022 04:27
