Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

It doesn't much matter what the actual numbers are if it comes down to Boris and Rishi, as is looking increasingly likely. Boris will win hands down with the members.

It might be better for Rishi to avoid another embarrassing loss, and accept the job offered to him as an olive branch by Boris this morning.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 17:01

I assume you a serious Johnson person Kissing. These last few posts are just too promotional otherwise.

The Tory membership are stupid. They picked Truss. Let us not credit them with too many brains, or any grasp of economics.

Jack Maidment AT jrmaidment
New: Boris Johnson has been personally calling Tory MPs from his holiday in a bid to secure their backing, at camillahmturner has been told.

He promised one MP that there would be a "different culture" in Downing Street if he becomes PM again.

If he was that convinced of getting the noms why is he doing this???

But it does confirm he is intending to try and stand.

Boris Johnson is "engaging with people from the old phone number he was forced to ditch after it was leaked online," according to the Times.

It wasn't leaked. It was just left on a website for anyone in the world to find for 15 years. And now he's using it again.

Latest numbers

Rishi - 72
Boris - 41
Penny - 17

Dweebie · 21/10/2022 17:08

Lets hope @Kissingfrogs25 that Sunak cares about more than personal embarrassment. I hope he stands and if he loses, refuses to work with Johnson.

It does rather look like the external forces that the UK has to handle don't want Johnson.

He needs a chancellor. I wonder who that will be. He's already asked Sunak who told him to get lost.

Javid?

Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 17:09

Javid has come out in support of Sunak.

IndigoC · 21/10/2022 17:09

Scratch that, Javid just declared for Sunak.

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2022 17:09

Caroline Johnson MP is backing Johnson.

Three months ago she resigned from his gov't because "the cumulative effects of [his] errors of judgment and domestic actions" had "squandered the goodwill of the Party, colleagues and constituents".

We are through the looking glass. ~AA

Kwasi Kwarteng?

If we're talking second chances for second rate chancers, might as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb and all that. 😀

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2022 17:13

He can keep Hunt unless he says no

I’m leaning towards wanting Sunak now for the markets factor

I think you don't have the right knowledge KissingFrogs25. If you read what ILeclercreturn posted it looks very accurate.

I don't know what ILeclercreturn does for a living, but she reads the EU pretty well, imo.

If this is the Leclerc who used to post on the Brexit threads, I believe they are EU-based!

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 17:15

@IndigoC - I would probably say Nadim Zahawi.

I don't know how credible that is, but I do think the declared people for Johnson will be the Brexit grouping.

But look at all of these supposed supporters for Johnson. All highly conditional. They will support him if he runs! What a crap endorsement.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 21/10/2022 17:16

What's the issues with Hunt and Boris?

Why wouldn't Hunt stay as chancellor with his team?

Will they agree on the direction Hunt wants?

in other words, will Boris keep his trap shut and do as he's told

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 17:18

Hunt is with Mordaunt - that's been arranged already

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 17:19

I think it is very telling when Sunak backing MPs go public with saying they will be aggressive with any MP supporting Boris. Personally that smells of desperation.

There is no way the Conservative party will back Rishi.
Major donors now coming forward to support Boris. These people are absolutely vital to the party's future election funding.

I am not totally sure where you are sourcing this inaccurate misinformation. France have just pulled out of a very important meeting with Germany on the grounds of a lack of unity and agreements! Such a weird spin you have posted on here. It is very well publicised that there is NO such agreement, and Germany have been accused of being 'selfish' by their neighbours. You can not just post such lies randomly on MN and not be challenged.

Heres the link: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/germany-will-avoid-winter-gas-shortage-boasts-selfish-olaf-scholz-ntkt8c0rh

Where is yours ILeclercreturn?

You're posting yesterday's news Kissing. I suggest you use EU sources for EU news rather than accusing well informed posters of lying.

DuncinToffee · 21/10/2022 17:20

Hunt was very vocal in caling for Johnson's resignation.

But then, he was against fracking not that long ago.

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 17:21

Wow!

So now Boris has some big beasts backing him - just updated:

Ben Wallace
Alok Sharma
Simon Clarke
JRM

I can't see equivalents for Sunak.

Nadine Dorries already told us who the Tories really work for, indeed Donors.

Yes, Zahawi is a good call. The right seems to be backing Boris, I don’t think Hunt would fly with them.

Different outlooks -

In Johnson's

"...resignation speech on 7th September, Johnson did channel something that sounded a little like Trussonomics.

He predicted he would be replaced by someone “dedicated” to cutting taxes because “that is the way to generate growth and the income to pay for great public services”.

It is rather interesting that Ireland relies on the UK for energy..

ILeclercreturn · 21/10/2022 17:24

Two comments. DW news (German online) with quotes from Olaf Schulz and Ms Ursula Von der Leyen from about 3 hours ago. I suspect they may know what they are talking about. The Times article was from earlier in the day, before today's meeting in Brussels. I live in France and look at French and German news. France 24 is a bit 'soft' but Mediapart has more hard hitting journalists.
If it is of any importance I have never been a 'she' and have no wish to be one now at 64 years old.
