Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Mordaunt has official confirmed she's standing.

Which is interesting. She must think she has a fair shot on getting the 100 votes.

Suggests there's a few liars in the Tory Party and/or people keeping cards closer to their chest than spreadsheets suggest.

I wonder if it’s more about keeping Boris under 100. I suspect she knows she can’t beat Rishi, and he’s perhaps promised her a cabinet role if she can steal enough votes away from Boris. I don’t think she has a realistic shot, although her discussion with Hunt is interesting.

Journalists don't reveal their sources.
We listen to them or not according to their credentials - Paul Brand's credentials seem very sound if he was political journalist of the year recently.

New YouGov poll. Oooooof, etc

Britain Elects
Westminster voting intention:

LAB: 56% (+5)
CON: 19% (-4)
LDEM: 10% (+1)
REF: 5% (+2)
GRN: 4% (-3)

{Mr Albanese joked when comparing his term so far with the leadership turnover in the UK, saying: "My government is stable, is orderly. The adults are in charge.

"I've been in office for five months. I've met the two British prime ministers, so far, and I obviously will have contact with a third at some time when those issues are concluded."}
Stolen from the Express (yes I know, I am being impartial here and Penny Mordant in a swimsuit (DFail)was making me feel a bit 'icky'.). BoJo in a mankini anyone?

This is referring to the Australian trade deal that fortunately for UK farmers hasn't been ratified yet. The automatic discrediting of reports because it is from the guardian/FT/Mail/Beano is more of a problem because it seems critical thinking has been abandoned.

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/10/2022 16:13

At the last leadership race, the Conservative Party was forced to abandon plans to allow members to change their vote after GCHQ warned that cyber hackers could change the votes

Please let the hackers change the vote- either Keir Starmer or the wet lettuce. Either might send a point to the tories.

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 16:16

Now that she's announced she's running, I wonder if the attack stories in the Mail are about to start. I remember all the 'part time Penny' pieces back in the summer..

The civil war in the Conservative and Unionist Party will rage on regardless of who is picked.

The ideology-driven wing will continue to duke it out with the merely blinkered wing, because there's money to be made no matter what happens to the Pound, and because the ideologists are like balloons filled with their own hot air.

Whenever their feet touch the ground they have convenient scapegoats to blame for the dose of reality, and there are voters who lap up the lies because the current Tory appeal is to a personal sense of self plus a good dollop of reference to the glorious past, with consideration of facts mocked as evidence of lack of belief in Britain. Belief in Britain is all it takes to transform the country in this new religion.

Hmmph · 21/10/2022 16:21

As far as I can see, PM has the least baggage of any of the three. She's the only one who hasn't broken the law for a start (I can't believe the bar is that low!)

MarshaBradyo · 21/10/2022 16:22

Wondering where the numbers are re MPs

Even a few days of speculation is enough.

Monday at least we’ll know. Interesting about markets which does go in Sunak’s favour.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 10:54

They are extremely stupid. They voted for Truss. They economically illiterate

She promised them tax cuts. They don't care about anything else.

They're easy to hoodwink as well. Boris is the ultimate con artist.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 16:26

I think it's a bit rich to say "part time Penny".

Johnson was completely idle. Barely did anything.

Good god this stuff is so transparent.

If Sunak and Mordaunt have any brains they will club together and cut Johnson out.

ifonly4 · 21/10/2022 16:29

I guess some MPs are waiting to see who puts themselves forward and what the candidates have to say, but so far each potential candidate has:

Rishi: 65 votes
Boris: 36 votes
Penny: 16 votes

ILeclercreturn · 21/10/2022 16:34

In a land far away Steve Bannon has been given a 4 month sentence. OK I know it is a bit remote but Aaron banks and Farage were 'involved with Bannon at some level or another.
Meanwhile the EU have hammered out a road map to give greater fuel security to the members of the EU. Transfers of gas and electricity between countries. The hardware infrastructure exists already of course but the 'road map' is about fair payments and a way to keep the overall prices down wherever possible.

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 16:34

I am looking at the backers as they are coming in:

Boris Johnson: 62
Rishi Sunak: 81
Penny Mardaunt: 21

It is looking very much like Rishi and Boris at the final.
With Rishi losing at the point the votes go to the party.

I really do think Boris stands a very good chance of being back in No.10 next week, he is the only one that has an actual mandate to lead. Additionally both he and Rishi has "partygate" fines, so really it boils down to who can actually win and election and that is Boris all day long in the eyes of many/most party members.

NEW @YouGov /@thetimes polling

All three candidates lose to Starmer but Sunak comes closest

Starmer 43% v Sunak 34%
Starmer 48% v Johnson 35%
Starmer 43% v Mordaunt 28%

Would the following do a good job or a bad job as PM?

Sunak:
43% good
40% bad

Johnson:
34% good
56% bad

Mordaunt:
26% good
35% bad

Whatever mandate Johnson had he threw away when he broke his own law (amongst other things). That line grew old very quickly.

I am not totally sure where you are sourcing this inaccurate misinformation. France have just pulled out of a very important meeting with Germany on the grounds of a lack of unity and agreements! Such a weird spin you have posted on here. It is very well publicised that there is NO such agreement, and Germany have been accused of being 'selfish' by their neighbours. You can not just post such lies randomly on MN and not be challenged.

Heres the link: www.thetimes.co.uk/article/germany-will-avoid-winter-gas-shortage-boasts-selfish-olaf-scholz-ntkt8c0rh

Polling changes all of the time.

What doesn't seem to change is the view of the people that will be deciding which one will be PM, and that is the Conservative party members and the donors, many of whom back Boris.

I can assure many of them consider Sunak to be an untrustworthy backstabber. He is blamed for the loss of Boris, and the subsequent disaster that has followed, not unreasonably.

Labour for sure, regardless of the latest polling will be much more worried about taking on Boris. Hence the support we see on here for Sunak and in the media.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 16:50

I think you don't have the right knowledge KissingFrogs25. If you read what ILeclercreturn posted it looks very accurate.

I don't know what ILeclercreturn does for a living, but she reads the EU pretty well, imo.

CaveMum · 21/10/2022 16:50

The gap between Sunak and Johnson on the betting exchanges is still widening, though not as quickly as earlier.

Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?
Notonthestairs · 21/10/2022 16:51

Of course Johnson has never "backstabbed" anyone. I'm sure Cameron & May were hugely appreciative of his loyalty 😉

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 16:51

Ben Wallace the Defence Secretary and quite possibly one of the most influential members has come out for Boris, this is truly seismic!

Well Cameron resigned, surely you must know that
May was kicked out because she fucked up brexit.

Get your facts straight please.

LexMitior · 21/10/2022 16:55

It does rather look like the external forces that the UK has to handle don't want Johnson.

He needs a chancellor. I wonder who that will be. He's already asked Sunak who told him to get lost.
