Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Hello all, apologies for my absence today, we took the DC for a day trip to that there London - complete with a swing by Westminster to see the assembled journalists in the pouring rain!

Here is the latest from Smarkets, the odds are holding pretty steady with Rishi on 1.26 and Boris on 4.7.

Am I right in thinking nominations have to be in by 2pm tomorrow? But we still don’t know exactly when Brady and his horse-smile will announce the results?

5pm they've said

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 20:27

150 for Sunak. By Monday, I think is looking like 170 and up, closer to 200.

Wild stuff!

CaveMum · 23/10/2022 20:29

Interesting, if Rishi gets to 155 then it is mathematically impossible for 3 candidates to stand. Could he then throw Penny his surplus nominees to get her to 100 before Boris? Much easier to then have Penny stand aside “for the greater good” than expect Boris to relinquish his ambitions.

Clavinova · 23/10/2022 20:30

Interesting - although I can't read much of the article;

Penny Mordaunt’s campaign contacted Boris Johnson’s team on Sunday morning seeking an agreement to influence the outcome of the contest to become the UK’s next prime minister, according to leaked text messages seen by Bloomberg.

Nominations by 2pm, if more than 2 candidates voting at 3.30pm followed by results at 5pm.

Croque · 23/10/2022 20:33

I guess we will know at 1.55pm in that case. 😊

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 20:34

Cavemum, if you look at who is supporting who, Johnson has just picked up Truss loyalists. I think that what you describe is more and more likely, because Johnson doesn't have a declared crossover of support.

Croque · 23/10/2022 20:35

It is always a pleasure to have Mr Brady gracing my screen 😊

sunnydaytoday0 · 23/10/2022 20:40

All this strategic stuff about lending votes and trying to second guess rival camps is like 4D chess. I'd be rubbish trying to organise something like this.

The ‘Tory party implodes’ scenario is still: Johnson gets exactly 100 MPs (with Mordaunt’s all going to Sunak), members then choose Johnson by 50-60%.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 20:58

It would be so delicious if Johnson got 99 nominations.

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 20:59

Oh. Well that’s that?

BREAKING:

Boris Johnson pulls out of the Tory leadership contest

He says he hoped he, Sunak and Mordaunt could come together and unite but they have been unable to do so

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 21:00

He says he got 102 nominations. Sure, boris 🤡

titchy · 23/10/2022 21:02

Oooh so who will they back now?

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 23/10/2022 21:03

Why would he pull out with so much time to go?

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 23/10/2022 21:03

Why would he pull out with so much time to go?

Because he knows he couldn’t get a hundred and it’d be (even more) embarrassing.

Exactly what I was about to say!

greenhousegal · 23/10/2022 21:05

I sincerely hope that the 1922 Committee will or are proposing to change the rules regarding selection of a PM.

It should be elected reps (MPs) only for a PM, and ok, they can get the membership involved in a Leadership vote, just leader though, not PM. Anyone think this is sensible and democratic?

It's all going to be very rocky anyway for a while. Time for the adults to take over.

He appears to think it'll be the less embarrassing option.

TokyoSushi · 23/10/2022 21:07

There we go, the 'well obviously I could have won, but I'm so honourable I won't' narrative survives 🙄

I think that was their intention after the summer’s debacle, they hadn’t started the process of changing the rules because they didn’t anticipate it happening again so quickly!

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 21:08

A serious point, of course, is that with all this Boris-bullshit Sunak will become PM tomorrow with no scrutiny of what he intends to do.

We may choose our MPs rather than our leaders, but these past couple of months have pushed that principle to breaking point.

BlessMyCottonSocks · 23/10/2022 21:08

Hm. So will he just put his efforts into a ‘stop Sunak’ campaign?

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 23/10/2022 21:09

Absolute clown. Hope his ego is suitably bruised and I hope all those who came out in support of him feel like total muppets! Smile
