Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Supply chains improve, reducing prices, and building security.

It's not impossible for the UK to build it's own, but it is harder. And it is expensive.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 16:22

Sounds as if Johnson asked Mordaunt to drop out. She refused and said her supporters would back Sunak if she did. Quite the threat.

Johnson must have huge issues if he is chasing her supporters.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 16:25

That’s my interpretation of what’s happening too Lex. Johnson’s fatal flaw is his inability to accept that the world doesn’t revolve around him and that everyone doesn’t bend to his will. Letting him back again would be insanity.

"There are trees in my garden with more energy, intellect and spirit than Starmer"

I doubt intellect. As far as intellect goes, Starmer beats Johnson by a country mile.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 16:32

Of course he will harriet Starmer's lightening intellect will set the world on fire 😂
Back in the real world he would make a brilliant health and safety officer or something equally bland. He is not going to weather the carnage coming his way and doesn't have the backbone for the job. He can't even work out his wife has a cervix and vagina, so I don't think he is going to stay afloat for very long.

GreatHonkingPudding · 23/10/2022 16:33

I fancy Starmer in a polo shirt. It's the arms.

sunnydaytoday0 · 23/10/2022 16:35

If it ends up Mordaunt vs Sunak in a members vote has anyone seen any polling of the members on this scenario? I know Sunak is much less preferred to Johnson by party members, but I'm not sure how he'd fare against Mordaunt, especially given the pro Boris votes have to go somewhere?

The style of politicians is always difficult, because politics is generally for those not gifted with great looks, except Penny Mordaunt.

She is extremely good looking and hard as nails. No she won't win but a future tip for the top.

They'd go for PM. Better an incompetent white woman than a vaguely competent Asian man. They've already proved that electing LT.

TokyoSushi · 23/10/2022 16:37

I don't think is Johnson is going to run. Then he can't lose, because you can't lose something you're not in can you? And he would never, ever, ever want to lose anything.

I think we'll have PM Sunak by this time tomorrow.

The bookies are certainly anticipating that Rishi will be the next PM. A huge gulf has opened up between him and the others over the weekend.

Yup. Mourdant has reportedly just rejected a request to throw her weight behind Johnson too.

If Johnson was even asking for Mourdant to give his campaign a leg up, it seems his hopes of making it to 100 are slim.

Some big Johnson allies coming out in support of Sunak today too.

Looking increasingly like a Sunak coronation.

GreatHonkingPudding · 23/10/2022 16:39

@OoooohBobMonkhouse

Our economy wouldn't be nearly so borked by 12 years of the Tories if we had the growth we would have without Brexit and the trade we would have without Brexit. Our economy is about 5% smaller and our trade with the 27 nearest countries to us is 16% smaller

Brexit = economic sanctions on Britain.

That's why pretty much the only major economy doing worse than ours is Russia's.

Agreed.

If that does happen “but she doesn’t know what a woman is” will be overridden by “at least she’s white”.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 16:40

Members were pretty pissed off that they weren’t given the chance to vote for Mordaunt last time round. She was well ahead of the field.

Working class Grammar school boy made good, compared to privileged, entitled toff. Of course his intellect surpasses that of the blustering, Latin/Greek quoting Buffoon.

She’s no where near 100 though?

Yes I agree. Her faux affronted reply to Kuenssberg about not having done a deal with Johnson for a top job means she's done one with Sunak.

Another talentless Cabinet awaits.

God help us all.

She might be if Johnson dropped out. And there are still about 140 MPs who haven’t declared.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 16:46

The interesting dynamic is if Johnson doesn't have 100. At some point on Monday, then some of his declared supporters (and undeclared) will start to shift.

Where they go is the big issue.

Sorry but, as lacking in charisma as he may be, there is no way that anybody (particularly from a working class background with no nepotism to rely on) goes on to have the legal career he did without possessing a brilliant intellect.

I don’t think she’s talentless

Just not what I want for a PM

I don’t care if she’s in the cabinet, in fact the main roles care about are PM, chancellor plus no GE yet

He basically admits he can't remember

Starmer was interviewed (or 'grilled' depending on your viewpoint) by Sophie Raworth the day before his interview with Nick Ferarri - and he still couldn't remember there were more than 6 people with him in Durham? He had no briefing despite the media interest? Give over. I heard the original LBC interview back in January and posted on here at the time that Starmer's answer was deliberately misleading at best. He was quite clearly asked; "How many people were there in total?" No misunderstanding.

In the Sophie Raworth interview, Starmer said there was 'no comparison' with his 'beer and curry' (17 people) compared to the 'cheese and wine meeting' at Number 10 (I think I counted 19 people - the 'cheese and wine meeting' was found not to have broken the rules either);

www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1550807/Keir-Starmer-BBC-Labour-Party-leader-Sophie-Raworth-party-gate-Boris-Johnson-latest-vn

Sure, he was probably obfuscating and being deliberately evasive to his interviewers. That's a categorically different scale of issue from Johnson's repeatedly breaking the law and lying to parliament about it, though.

And the bottom line is that the police didn't consider he'd broken any laws even WITH the actual number of people there. So the obfuscation wasn't actually necessary and didn't actually hide anything of material importance.

Would it be better if all our politicians answered every question from everyone absolutely straightforwardly, telling the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Sure. Is this every likely to happen? Of course not. Does an interview like this show that KS is any worse in this respect than most others? I don't think so.

Is any of this RELEVANT to Johnson's cavalier attitude to blatent law breaking and lying about it afterwards to all and sundry, including parliament, and the fact that if the Tories choose him as leader we may have to go through all this again in a few months after he gets suspended? No, it really isn't.

GreatHonkingPudding · 23/10/2022 16:54

I honestly don't give a shit which Tory gets to be PM this time. I just want them to fix all the things they have broken or get out of the way so someone else can sort out the mess they've made of our country.

Were I currently not out of the country, I’d be putting some money on PM. Not that I think she’s the most likely outcome but 20-1 odds seem very generous.
