Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

LONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Boris Johnson will enter the race to replace Liz Truss as British prime minister, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton Harris told Sky News on Sunday, saying the former leader had enough support from lawmakers to pass the 100-vote threshold.

Asked if Johnson would run, Heaton Harris said: "Yes, I think so."

"We do have the numbers... that's not an issue."

Can Heaton - whoever he is - declare on Johnson’s behalf? Doesn’t he have to do it himself?

Those poor widdle senior tories. What did they do to deserve this? 😭

It is thanks to the likes of you, lowering the general tone of all discussion that will make it impossible for Labour or any party to govern properly.

Ranting and bad behaviour and insults have become normalised.

I wonder how you feel to be on the receiving end, if Starmer can ever get his shit together and publish a policy or position on anything beyond self ID.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 15:09

More desperation 😂

Well he is a minister - so yes he has total authority to announce this update.

How can he be a minister when we don’t actually have a government right now? For the second time in six weeks, ffs.

Sad little comments like this demonstrate perfectly the footballisation of politics. They know he's not fit for office but he's their guy so they whoop and cheer for him anyway.

Well he is still officially a minister. Simple as that. Liz Truss is still PM. We do need a working government 247....even if things are moving around.

Coming home isn't an analogy to football but to No10 Confused

The inquiry can be cancelled by the Cons MPs I would like to add.

Oh, I’ve absolutely no doubt that it will. That would be entirely in keeping with Johnson’s record of corruption in office, which is 100% guaranteed to continue.

To be fair kissingfogs and I are unlikely allies. I want Johnson to win, because he’s a stubborn turd that’ll only be flushed away with a general election loss.

It was never going to fly given who is leading it! It is supposed to be impartial!! My arse with bloody Harriet the Hag in charge, it is laughable! Perhaps if they had given the job to someone with creditability or even a whiff of neutrality it might stand a chance, but not now.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 15:28

I thought there were four Tories on that committee, including Charles Walker who seems to be on the decent side of the party.

Great! All aboard the Boris train one more to add in Sleepless.

It is interesting that you want Boris to win because you think he will lose the GE....given how many Labour supporters voted for him last time I wouldn't be so sure. It is not like he is coming up against an an amazing leader of the opposition that is full of charisma and overflowing policies and ideas. There are trees in my garden with more energy, intellect and spirit than Starmer I am sorry to say. Starmer is wonderful for babies, he sends them all to sleep the minute he opens his mouth but to lead a country - no chance. I am sorry but he is not PM material and he never will be. He can't even figure out what women are! What hope do we have.

You want to hope the Cons do win the next election.

And.....it is a biased inquiry with more holes than the titanic. No one is going to take any notice of Harriet's campaign.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 23/10/2022 15:30

The bookies are certainly anticipating that Rishi will be the next PM. A huge gulf has opened up between him and the others over the weekend.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 15:32

@Blossomtoes - interestingly Truss did not move to stop it. Nor will Sunak if he wins.

It will be a useful tool in finishing off a difficult rival. Johnson has good reason to be worried.

The Tories out number the non Tories. If it’s biased, which way to you think the bias might lie? Presumably you can count?

Most people do in fact credit Boris with achieving far more with brexit than anyone else managed to do in years!

The problem is that Brexit itself has achieved nothing whatsoever positive, either in its current truncated form or would do otherwise.
A common question on these threads is “what has Brexit done for us?” and answer comes there none, because anything it has done has been immensely damaging.

Can I ask a question please?

What are the advantages to the UK being in the EU now?

midgetastic · 23/10/2022 15:44

Well one advantage would be able to claim science funding which would secure sone well paying jobs

And cheaper easier imports and exports wouldn't hurt either

Admittedly the eu couldn't have stopped the mess up

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 23/10/2022 15:50

@OoooohBobMonkhouse - it would help the situation in NI. Having a border in the Irish Sea is problematic. The NI Agreement means that there can’t be a hard border on the island of Ireland. At the very least, the U.K. would benefit from joining the Customs Union. But apparently that is still considered insufficiently Brexity - even by the Brexiteers who promised we’d stay in the Single Market when campaigning for Leave.

Why is it democratic for a Conservative Party members to impose a PM that would disastrous for the country as a whole? Johnson is a liar and a ‘nasty piece of work’

+5% of GDP. Growth.
