Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

I don't understand the Tory argument behind backing Boris for the next election. Clearly - and bizarrely - he still has a lot of public support. But a larger percentage of the public dislike him and won't forgive him. Surely therefore better to back Sunak and a relatively clean slate?

Isn't the opposite also true though, that BJ persuades PM backers to switch to him given PM won't get anywhere near the 100? That then scrapes BJ over the line.

Yes quite, and then Penny picks up a very juicy job in the cabinet in the meantime and gears up to take over in the longer term.

Possibly, but I'm not sure that Mordaunt's supporters are as 'anyone but Sunak' as Boris' will be.

In 2024 Tory Wipe out Penny loses her seat...

As it stands we still have a Tory government for another two years.

I very much doubt that My money’s on an early summer election after they get obliterated in the May local elections.

Good question.
Well Boris has a lot of support across the board all over the country.
Sunak has just the support of a bunch of MPs. Sunak does not have any mandate to lead, nor has he won over so many of his fellow MPs and the conservative party that will support the next election. He has no chance with the red wallers for instance.

Sunak is not a clean slate, he is totally untested as a leader, the same as Truss.

If he is appointed three things will happen:

  • The party and Boris and Truss supporters will turn against him and make it impossible to actually achieve anything
  • The left wing media news channels and Labour will relentlessly demand a GE on the grounds Sunak has no mandate to be there at all
  • The conservative party will refuse to back him and the donors will desert him.

Sunak will be out in months, if not weeks. He simply does not have the authority or support to lead the party or the nation.

LexMitior · 23/10/2022 14:52

@sunnydaytoday0 -quite a lot of PMs support are good friends of T May. Food for thought

I get your sentiment
But why on earth would they choose to do this?

More fool them if they can't move on, as you say Boris hasn't even got brexit done

It is the last thing any sane Tory would do is call a GE.
It is not going to happen.

GCAcademic · 23/10/2022 14:55

And Boris has already had to resign once for those very reasons. And has a possible suspension hanging over him too.

Dweebie · 23/10/2022 14:56

@Kissingfrogs25 you're right but for the general public the hatred, the loathing of Johnson is as real as the support. And more widespread. He is totally polarising. Sunak isn't.

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 14:56

Secondly it does not matter how many backers Sunak gets because it will be the members that will choose the leader.

Not if the others don’t get over the 100 threshold. It will be a coronation if they don’t. And they both appear to be struggling.

Don't be silly. We all know about the NI protocol issue. Most people do in fact credit Boris with achieving far more with brexit than anyone else managed to do in years!

The inquiry can be cancelled by the Cons MPs I would like to add.

Most people know we are up the predicted shit creek you mean
Brexit, love it or love it, wasn't as easy as was made out

"The inquiry can be cancelled by the Cons MPs I would like to add."

A vote in Parliament could cancel it.

Not sure why they'd do that given they have the majority on the Committee and it would look dreadful to the public. Paterson Mark 2.

Many Labour supporters simply transfer their hate to someone else, last week it was Truss' turn, Sunak is not immune.

They are playing nice for now, if he were ever appointed it would last all of 5 minutes.

Those poor widdle senior tories. What did they do to deserve this? 😭

Blossomtoes · 23/10/2022 15:04

Well Boris has a lot of support across the board all over the country.

Why did the Tories lose every by-election in the last two years then? A couple of them with huge majorities over turned. The polls indicate the only PM less popular is Truss.

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 14:40

But brexit got done. Why do you still care either way?

I think it would be fairer to say that 'Brexit' is still a work in progress.

Kissingfrogs25 · 23/10/2022 15:05

LONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Boris Johnson will enter the race to replace Liz Truss as British prime minister, Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Heaton Harris told Sky News on Sunday, saying the former leader had enough support from lawmakers to pass the 100-vote threshold.

Asked if Johnson would run, Heaton Harris said: "Yes, I think so."

"We do have the numbers... that's not an issue."

Kissing what’s your prediction on when he’ll declare standing?

I’m not saying he definitely won’t get 100 but wondering if he hasn’t yet as Sunak has declared

borntobequiet · 23/10/2022 15:06

Most people do in fact credit Boris with achieving far more with brexit than anyone else managed to do in years!

The problem is that Brexit itself has achieved nothing whatsoever positive, either in its current truncated form or would do otherwise.
A common question on these threads is “what has Brexit done for us?” and answer comes there none, because anything it has done has been immensely damaging.

SleeplessInEngland · 23/10/2022 15:07

“We have the numbers, we just don’t want to embarrass Mr Sunak with how large our support base is. But trust is: it’s way, way over a hundred. Pinky-promise.”
