Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Do we get a TV debate with potential candidates explaining how they would solve the problems facing the Conservative party ? Grin

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 09:20

@BirmaBrite I think so, but don’t know what the rules are on claiming the higher rate pension as PM. For example DH is ex-RAF, he was only entitled to claim the pension at his rank on leaving if he had served 2 years in that position, otherwise he would have to accept the pension rate for the rank below.

@PrioritiseCalm I guess if you are employing a couple of staff members, plus their pension costs, and travel reimbursements it could easily equate to that amount. It all has to be signed off so it’s not just a case of requesting the money and getting it back.

I’m not defending the system by the way, just stating what it is and what it isn’t!

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 09:23

Can’t see Charles Walker’s name on the latest list from the BBC, though I see my local MP plus the slime ball in the next door constituency (Hancock) have both come out for Rishi.

I think they said that if it goes to the members, there will be one tv debate.

MPs have a private hustings on Monday where the declared candidates state what they'd do.

At the moment, the MPs are supporting potential candidates based on guesses about their direction and their personalities.

That would be entertaining.

newnamethanks · 22/10/2022 09:38

On the tv news like the rest of the world.

The Elephant in the room is Brexit, it is having an impact of the UK's growth and someone anyone needs to start having an open and honest conversation with the population about what needs to happen to ensure growth stops being impeded by it.
I don't think Boris would or could, not sure on Rishi. I think the Conservatives are looking at limiting the damage to the party, so losing at the next GE, but keeping a decent amount of seats, let Labour deal with the awkward conversation and any changes going forward ?
The question is when would the next GE take place ? Too soon and the Tory's are toast.
They really need to hold their noses and vote for whoever is going to get them through the next year or so, hopefully without giving Labour a landslide at the next election, whoever they choose, they need to stick to, if they try to get rid of another PM ( or lose one due to them no longer being allowed to govern ) in this term, they will have lost what little credibility they have left.

If they choose Boris they’re toast. Without Sunak as his chancellor the markets may react similarly as they did to Truss. Internationally he has no credibility. Inevitably there will be an election.

newnamethanks · 22/10/2022 09:41

@tinx Reply above.

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 09:41

The markets dropped as soon as the prospect of Johnson returning was mooted.

Dave20 · 22/10/2022 09:48

If Sunak becomes PM it shows just shows what a waste of time the last 6 weeks have been.
Im fuming. Truss and her chancellor have fucked me over with my mortgage payments. An extra £200 a month. We’re scraping by as it is. And it could have been avoided.
Do I get an apology? She even looked as though she smirked as she resigned.
Her only achievement she mentioned was the energy costs.
But not even that was an achievement. The £400 discount was approved months ago and energy costs are still set to double in April aren’t they ?

So Liz Truss achieved fuck all. Apart from destroying our credibility and peoples bank balances.

Cheers Liz.

Well, there was that tiny group of people who made a load of money out of shorting the pound. They've done pretty well out of it. I expect we're all thrilled for them!

Blossomtoes · 22/10/2022 09:52

The last six weeks have been worse than a waste of time regardless of who the next PM is.

Of course they did.

Anyone with even a toehold on reality knows bringing Boris Johnson back is a terrible idea.

He told his supporters to support Truss, so we have Boris Johnson to thank for our higher mortgage payments and the extra £65 billion on the national debt.

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 10:11

Smarkets update

Rishi - 1.61
Boris - 3.1

sunnydaytoday0 · 22/10/2022 10:17

Surely the idea on the front of the Mail about Sunak/Boris teaming up together is a non starter. Sunak quit Johnson's government only a few month's ago, and Johnson isn't going to accept a home or foreign secretary (or any other) job in a Sunak administration. He wants the top job or nothing.

Only if it's put to a bushtucker trial Grin

Dave20 · 22/10/2022 10:21

Why would Boris or Sunak want it? Not money so must be power right ?

Financial Times this morning is not keen on the prospect of Boris

Croque · 22/10/2022 10:28

Unlike Rishi, Boris is an ex journalist. Infact, his whole family is very media savvy which is why Stanley and Rachel have upped their PR this week. He can and will play his cards close to his chest until the time is right (if he gets that far).

Until Penny is out of the picture, it is hard to call it. I think that she should bow out early as she does not have a hope in hell of winning.

hesbeingabitofadick · 22/10/2022 10:34

Croque you need to tell my useless arse of an MP then...he's backing her again.🤦‍♀️

Croque · 22/10/2022 10:35

I don't think Bobo would be persuaded to park his saggy behind on a complicated long haul flight home if he never had the hundred votes within his grasp. He knows the members will deliver for him beyond that point but it was the formality of clearing the first hurdle.

Hmmph · 22/10/2022 10:43

Penny can't back out yet. She's the only one who's said she run. Therefore she's currently the only one who can win.

I am not sure why Rishi is waiting as he has more than 100 backers. Anyone know?

Boris I assume will wait to reach 100 before saying anything, otherwise it might be embarrassing.

Not sure why some MPs aren't saying anything yet. They surely know who they'd back.

MarshaBradyo · 22/10/2022 10:47

Sunak waiting is a bit frustrating, not sure why he wouldn’t declare.

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 10:52

In answer to your question about the pension @BirmaBrite , turns out there is no longer a specific pension for the PM. All MPs are part of Parliamentary pension scheme: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-63350359

Croque · 22/10/2022 10:54

The whole race will be played out behind closed doors (down to the last vote) before it is reenacted for public consumption. I have also heard rumours about George Osborne being up for a cabinet position. 😶
