Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

It comes down to economic competence.

The Tories really need to maintain or reduce interest rates from a potential 6 per cent peak.

Who can do that? Johnson? No. This is why the media is full of team up with Rishi as chancellor. All puff. Sunak has already said no. He resigned from Johnson's cabinet.

Johnson has set a load of rubbish in the media about talks with Sunak. That is ridiculous but Johnson endorsed Truss.

Why should MPs trust Johnson and think he can deliver? That would be a very new Boris Johnson.

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 11:03

@MarshaBradyo - if I were Sunak, I would be working my 100 plus nominations. I would be aiming for 150 plus.

It's perfectly possible that on current numbers that Mordaunt is one of the final two.

Endlesssummer2022 · 22/10/2022 11:06

I heard a Tory MP on the radio say the Red Wall wants Boris back and we all know that’s the only group the Tory’s listen to now so he’ll be back.

Look forward to continued economic decline which started in 2016. Brexit fanaticism will mean as long as this same group of MPs are in power, we won’t be able to re-enter the Customs Union and Single Market to kick start our economy again. These people would have us all starve before they accept this is all madness.

I’m surprised at red wall but maybe

But hasn’t Labour already stated they won’t do single market or customs union either?

cakeorwine · 22/10/2022 11:14

The polls weren't great for Boris when he was in power. There was an issue with 'the Blue Wall and a lot of potential Lib Dem wins from Conservatives.

Maybe the Tory MPs have forgotten that.

He won't change. He is who he is. And we are heading for a recession. Energy bills are high. Mortgage rates are high. There are a lot of issues. Why is he the answer?

Faciadipasta · 22/10/2022 11:16

Place marking

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 11:17

The difficulty is the Tory membership. They are stupid.

This means that Sunak must have a huge amount of momentum with MPs. He needs an amount of nominations that will mean Johnson is an irrelevance. A huge amount.

The one thing about Johnson is he won't take a lesser job than PM. He will not sit and be a team player. So Sunak either has to get so many nominations that Johnson looks totally irrelevant, or, if it comes down to both of them, that Johnson will have a big problem in managing his MPs.

Johnson was very bad at that last one. He treated them very badly to the point where his colleagues would not do the media rounds. Made them vote for matters like Owen Patterson which started a decline in popularity.

ILeclercreturn · 22/10/2022 11:21

{There are a lot of issues. Why is he the answer?}

Well the ERG/Hedge fund managers love him because all the speculation and disruption is causing market fluctuations which shovels money into their pockets whichever direction the markets move. With insider trading and carefully selected placement of funds they are 'betting' on the markets knowing the results in advance. Brexit is just a vehicle for wealth creation (for those who already had money). Just wait until whole sections of UK industry get sold off to asset strippers, then the fun will really start (for some).

by the end of his tenure the polls were showing him as the most unpopular post-WWII PM. Truss then stole that title of course...

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 11:24

The papers are full of the need for economic competence. Andrew Neill in Daily Mail has a good piece.

Expect momentum to build behind that.

Sunak waiting is a bit frustrating, not sure why he wouldn’t declare.

Possibly because he might decide not to run if he's going to end up against Johnson in a members ' vote.

With May everyone else dropped out and she was the last man standing so it didn’t need to go to the members.

Yes, he knows he will very likely lose against Johnson in a member's vote. He's gone through that public rejection once already a few months ago.

How mad must a party's policies be if the people who support them enough to join the party are utter loons who can't be trusted to choose the leader?

Labour have had a similar issue though hence the worst outcome at the last election since 1930s.

It was a huge defeat, and let’s face it they’ve lost at each election over last twelve years too due to choice of leader.

I think they are finally learning though with Starmer. It can’t just be to the extremes of the party.

IrisVersicolor · 22/10/2022 11:36

But who are the shadowy Tory members? Anyone can join. So if you wanted to fuck up the U.K. you sign up for Tory party membership and choose ridiculous leaders…

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 11:44

The issue is that no political party can have a leader that does not command a majority of their MPs.

The membership cannot have a process where they override that, because they like simple messages. The Tory membership have screwed the country.

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 11:50

There has been talk that they’re going to change the way the Tories pick their leader - when in Government it will be down to MPs to choose and when in opposition it will go to the members.

That stops the nonsense of 6-weeks where no one is governing and they’re all running about like headless chickens.

I suspect they were putting those plans in place for the next time, problem is they weren’t expecting “next time” to be 44 days after the last time!

LexMitior · 22/10/2022 11:55

You can still see the membership cocking it up by demanding their MP votes for Johnson and threatening deselection if they don't.

They have learned nothing from the Truss episode. Nothing. We have a parliamentary system. A leader must have the confidence and true support of their party as it sits in Parliament.

CaveMum · 22/10/2022 11:56

BBC Breaking - Rishi is expected to announce his candidacy “imminently”.

According to the polls that MP’s lying or deluded. The Tories have lost the red wall regardless of leader.

Well if a Tory mp said it it must be true.

Frost comes out for Sunak, which has surprised people.

I'm sure that some MPs are being threatened by their local parties into endorsing Johnson.
