By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

The cynic's theory about Mordaunt's candidacy as expressed here is that she's in league with Sunak and is there to either finish second and gracefully stand aside in the best interests of the country. Will be interesting to see if her total starts climbing rapidly now that Sunak has cleared the first hurdle:

I am hearing Boris has quietly reached 100 backers. So it’s looking like Boris V Rishi next week.

She couldn't beat Sunak three months ago. What has changed?

She was subjected to a pretty relentless smear campaign from the right of the party. Braverman put the boot in the moment she failed to get enough votes to stay in the contest. Lord Frost and Trevelyon then joined in. She was labelled incompetent and lazy yet still came third.

He hasn’t even announced he’s standing.

The membership will go for anyone but Sunak . So the trick for MPs is to get Penny on the ticket?

Yes I know she thinks I can change sex but she will keep shtum for the sake of the party. Unlike Keir.

OK, I get that. But she was always going to be knocked about and beaten up in the contest by the bigger kids. It comes with the territory.

I've nothing against the woman, or at least I didn't until today. I worry that by putting herself forward again, she is demonstrating Truss-like excessive and unfounded self-belief. I really don't want Truss 2.0, another deluded one with better skin and shinier hair.

Theoretically though Mordaunt can also secure 100 votes - there are 350-ish up for grabs. It ain’t over till the fat lady sings, and all that.

What makes you say the membership will go for anyone but Sunak?

It didn’t come with any other candidates’ territory. I’m a dyed in the wool Labour voter and it was patently obvious to me.

Boris Johnson's longtime cheerleaders at the Mail taking a similar line. Is he not quite finding the overwhelming support his backers suggest?

Well he's sent his dad out to plead his case which seems to indicate a certain desperation. Most unedifying. You're a big boy now Boz, you can leave your dad at home. All the other boys and girls leave mum and dad at home. Be a big brave boy and do the same.

Despite everything, Boris is still quite popular with lots of Tory voters.It wasn’t the public that forces him out, it was his own party.
The conservatives know they’re on thin ice.

They have to hope and prey they make it to the next GE, let alone try and win it.
I think the Tories will bring back Boris if it means them having a better chance of keeping power- even those that hate him might bring him back.

The tories only care about themselves- party before country. No way will they willingly offer a GE right now with opinion polls as they are.

Newscast had an interesting discussion about whether Boris actually WANTS to stand - the economic mess, the investigation hanging over him and the likelihood that he’d just be leading the party to a huge defeat at the next GE.

The fact he hasn’t declared yet, despite getting close to the magic 100 may be indicative. Is he waiting to see how many Rishi appears to have? If Rishi looks like he could get close to 50% of MPs on board then would it not be humiliating for BoJo to be seen as second best?

Well the Tories have now announced that it’ll be an online vote.

General elections aren’t online, for cybersecurity reasons. The Tory Party has even less security available.

So I guess China/Russia will be deciding our next PM.

Hey, remember when we were a democracy? Good wasn’t it.

To be fair Russia/China would vote BJ, as would the Tory members so maybe no major security threat.
