Liz Truss has resigned. Part 3: The Return of the King?

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 10:40

Continuation from last thread.

By Monday we could have a new prime minister, and by next Friday at the latest.

Will Sunak win this time, or could Johnson get his old job back? Would the Tory members once again go against the wishes of the MPs?

And yes I think Johnson sees himself as some sort of world king..

Yeah but that doesn't count. What they really mean by "foreign" is "brown".

Wait till hey find out about his Turkish heritage

Wakemeuuuup · 21/10/2022 18:30

Sunak was born in Southampton though so he isn't foreign at all

@derxa I remember you from the old threads. Although I rarely agreed with you I do remember hugely enjoying your contributions.

You seem to have become a lot less thoughtful and more combative.

You are clearly an intelligent and engaging woman so it baffles me why now you deliberately misunderstand the obvious reason why journalists protect their sources.

And your attack on Campbell ( ( 'he should know') in that discussion on impostor syndrome was a bit iffy too.

Thank you for your kind words. The answer is Twitter. I'm sure Brand and Campbell are decent people behind closed doors. (Campbell was a good friend to dear old Charles Kennedy for instance) However on Twitter they get my hackles up.

He absolutely was indeed derxa

I worked for Al for a while.

full You Gov survey results (voting intentions)

Looking at those results @boys3 I might just pop a little bet on a GE before Christmas !

Where do the candidates stand on public endorsements c7pm
.
Rishi Sunak 74
Boris Johnson 43
Penny Mordaunt 18

titchy · 21/10/2022 19:38

Guido currently has Sunak on 88 and Johnson 67...

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 19:44

Guido is including anonymous votes though. A commentator is pointing out that if a campaign actually had the names they'd release them.

I think it is very telling when Sunak backing MPs go public with saying they will be aggressive with any MP supporting Boris. Personally that smells of desperation

What about the MPs who’ve said they’ll cross the floor if it’s Johnson. Are they desperate?

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2022 19:52

What is interesting here is people are saying Mordaunt has stalled. Yet since the gilt market shift at lunchtime Johnson has hardly had anyone come out for him either.

Meanwhile Sunak has been slow but steady.

There is going to be a fair amount of vote shifting. Those coming out for x are not set in stone.

Monday could be more interesting than you think

BirmaBrite · 21/10/2022 19:58

Do people think Sunak is a unity candidate ? I appreciate that the Conservative party are pretty fractured but would enough of them fall into line behind him to keep things chugging along for another 18 months or so ?

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 21/10/2022 20:07

I don't think anyone would be a unity candidate.

sunnydaytoday0 · 21/10/2022 20:09

Who knows, we might end up with PM Coffey 😅

Steady now.
There's no need for that kind of talk.

I know it's a crisis situation but we are not at Mark Francois for pm levels of stupidity. Just total collapse of the tory Party and the economy levels of stupid. Humanity has a few years left.

Hmmph · 21/10/2022 20:27

I assume that the people behind PM might actually have put in their nomination letters to Graham Bradey because she's actually confirmed she's standing.

I am assuming that as RS and BJ haven't said they're standing, no one has actually nominated them yet.

So all the names are currently hypothetical if they stand and if they don't do something major to make the MPs change their mind

stuckdownahole · 21/10/2022 21:37

As a non-Tory, I understand why Sunak is standing and why Johnson is standing. Sunak was in the final two last month and his criticisms of Truss were proved right. Johnson led the party to a thumping election victory 3 years ago, which gives him a personal mandate that he and his supporters believe trumps any queries over his integrity.

I don't get why Mordaunt is standing. I don't want to fall into the trap of defining a blonde younger woman as shallow or superficial, but she does have a lower profile and less experience than the two men or even the other blonde woman that's just resigned. She couldn't beat Sunak three months ago. What has changed?

If her candidacy is an attempt to boost her image or trade her support for a promise of a job from Boris or Rishi, then she's being vain and ridiculous. We are at crisis point here, this is not the time to insist on an audition.

Hmmph · 21/10/2022 21:44

Guido Fawkes. Now has RS on 97, BS on 68 and PM on 25

Kissingfrogs25 · 21/10/2022 21:47

Mardaunt is looking for a plum cabinet position so she will run despite stalling.

Hmmph · 21/10/2022 21:49

Guido Fawkes now has RS on 100

RedToothBrush · 21/10/2022 21:52

Any MP that can’t get behind a leader that won a landslide and is the only hope of getting re elected SHOULD resign and join the Liberal Democrats. The moment is fast approaching - a lack of loyalty will have consequences.
