IT'S NOT A HACK!

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 14:51

I know iABU but my reels on Insta and FB (yes I'm unreasonable to use SM!) are full of HACKS.

Except....I wouldn't consider any of them hacks!

-'Short Hair Hack' - video of girl using Kirby grips to pull back some of her fringe...THIS IS JUST A HAIRSTYLE

-Important life hack' - video shows how you should take a photo of important things like business cards in case you lose them... THIS IS JIST COMMON SENSE?

-'Ironing hack' - video shows someone ... wait for it.... turning a shirt over so buttons are face down and they don't have to iron around them.... WHAT? WHY WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING BUT THIS?

Yes, I'm unreasonably angry about this...yes I'm using too many capital letters... yes I need to give my head a wobble as there are worse things going on

Any other hacks that aren't hacks that people have rolled eyes at?

Lighthearted obvs

Top tip!
Don't read SM and head back to Viz, the true golden age.

LoopDiL00p · 19/10/2022 14:55

I once saw a 'How to fold a fitting sheet hack'. Admittedly I do use that method every time now, but I agree it's not a hack.

In my excitement, I showed my mum in law and she just rolled her eyes at me and told me she's been doing it that way for years

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 19/10/2022 14:56

Lol, it never occurred to me to turn buttons over so you’ve inadvertently shared a HACK!! to me .

The Viz top tips were excellent. I still remember one that had me wheezing on the floor as a teen
”If you’re worried about your hamster hurting itself on its wheel make it a helmet out of half a ping pong ball”.

HoofWankingSpangleCunt · 19/10/2022 14:58

I also used to love reading Readers Tips in Take A Break and the like. Usually someone’s husband took the legs of a cupboard then it would be repurposed as a bird table or whatever.

Oh bugger I've turned into one of them!

It does sound like I need to find these Viz top tips and see if I could pass them off as hacks of today

Please share this hack 👀 I'm still rolling mine into a ball.

save money on expensive carpet by strapping two squares of carpet to your feet.

NotLactoseFree · 19/10/2022 15:19

Totally get you. I think it's why I quite like Jamie Oliver - he (mostly) uses "hack" correctly. Usually as he whips out a jar of curry paste and explains that there are 500 ingredients in t and it's a million times easier than making your own!

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 15:20

I think the worst are those who try to convince you that a product has been used wrong by everyone and this is how you SHOULD be using it (cue clickbait title)

The worst recent one is that colanders have been used wrongly. The real way to use them (apparently) is to put on top of the saucepan of boiling water and pasta (or whatever) then hold the colander and tip everything upside down over a sink so the boiling water comes out through the holes and the pasta stays in the saucepan.

How is this easier than tipping one handed the saucepan over a colander standing in a sink?

Grrr

I’m also sick of the constant stream of “hacks” which are just inane or common sense.

catfunk · 19/10/2022 15:20

Op, you need to follow 'take a shite' on Facebook. Loads of hilarious 'hacks' from womens mags including using a pitta as a clutch bag

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 15:21

@Vapeyvapevape 😆 a great hack given the cost of heating at the moment!

Mrs Hinch had a very similar “hack”. She bought these slippers with mop material on the soles and she just flings cleaner on the floor and shuffles around instead of actually using a mop.

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 15:27

@catfunk oh.my.god

I could not stop scrolling through the content. These can't be real!

This was my favourite

Those are actually very good for overly textured floor tiles. My kitchen tiles used to require me to get down on the floor and scrub them individually like Ruby from Upstairs Downstairs. But those mop slippers let me get them clean while remaining upright.

Saltywalruss · 19/10/2022 15:33

Yes, a lot of the time these "hacks" are just plain old fashioned tips .

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 15:35

@NotLactoseFree I agree Jamie Oliver does often give genuine time saving/cost cutting hacks BUT he will never live down the lie that is '15 minute meals' in my house 😆 (1 hour if you include all the washing up!) 😂

Nailing 2 Kallax together and covering them in chalk paint - IKEA hack!

KimberleyClark · 19/10/2022 15:36

I watched a video of a pan cleaning “hack” in which the woman used toothpaste, Coke and virtually every other cleaning product in her kitchen. Didn’t seem to work very well.

MenaiMna · 19/10/2022 15:37

If you are on FB you might like to join a page called "take a shite" which absolutely, resolutely and appropriately laughs at people who think they are "hacking" life by using their common sense or following instructions.
