IT'S NOT A HACK!

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 14:51

I know iABU but my reels on Insta and FB (yes I'm unreasonable to use SM!) are full of HACKS.

Except....I wouldn't consider any of them hacks!

-'Short Hair Hack' - video of girl using Kirby grips to pull back some of her fringe...THIS IS JUST A HAIRSTYLE

-Important life hack' - video shows how you should take a photo of important things like business cards in case you lose them... THIS IS JIST COMMON SENSE?

-'Ironing hack' - video shows someone ... wait for it.... turning a shirt over so buttons are face down and they don't have to iron around them.... WHAT? WHY WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING BUT THIS?

Yes, I'm unreasonably angry about this...yes I'm using too many capital letters... yes I need to give my head a wobble as there are worse things going on

Any other hacks that aren't hacks that people have rolled eyes at?

Lighthearted obvs

The IKEA "hacks" which involve a lot of wood, jigsaws, glue, nails etc. NOT A HACK!

MenaiMna · 19/10/2022 15:38

Catfunk 2nd day in a row I've been beaten in the comments because I take so long to write my thoughts lol

I also used to love reading Readers Tips in Take A Break and the like. Usually someone’s husband took the legs of a cupboard then it would be repurposed as a bird table or whatever.

Ah I loved these, they normally involved more time and effort than they saved and were utterly ridiculous.

Save money on rubber bands by making your own from rubber gloves or something.

There were also an inordinate number of tips involving alternative uses for sanitary pads.

shinynewapple22 · 19/10/2022 15:41

Thanks for the hack OP! I'm in my 50s and whenever I've ironed a shirt I've always carefully ironed around the buttons. Never knew this .

Mentalpiece · 19/10/2022 15:42

It's a TIP, not a hack!
<weeps>

Mentalpiece · 19/10/2022 15:44

@Vapeyvapevape I remember seeing a McDonald's advert on TV many years ago showing a family with carpet tiles strapped to their feet 😂

AffIt · 19/10/2022 15:45

My favourite Viz top tip:

"Murderers! Want to dispose of a body? Simply parcel it up and send it to yourself via Royal Mail and voila - you'll never see it again!"

shinynewapple22 · 19/10/2022 15:45

I love the TAB tips page . It's a lot
Smaller now - only about two tips each magazine.

ReneBumsWombats · 19/10/2022 15:48

Is this TikTok? You have to remember that the overwhelming majority of that market has only been alive for about 25 minutes. Everything is new to them. Some of the reaction videos showing that well-applied makeup makes you prettier, I swear. They didn't know this.

I honestly think there was a running gag among the editors about sanitary towels back then. Some of those things could not be taken seriously.

Life hack: come off social media!

LookItsMeAgain · 19/10/2022 16:08

There is a doctor on FB/TicTok/YouTube called Dr. Mike who takes the piss out of the 5 Minute Crafts and the ilk. Well worth a watch! 😂

My favourite Viz tip....Create the Primark experience at home by scattering all your clothes on the floor and running your wife over with a pushchair

Gymnopedie · 19/10/2022 16:19

We reached peak hack some time ago. One of my favourites, use a cheap plastic shoe rack in the bathroom to hold and tidy up all your shower gel and shampoo bottles. Stacey Solomon was hailed as a genius on SM for that one.

MyPurpleJacket · 19/10/2022 16:23

You need to subscribe to ‘Take a Shite’ on FB. Then you can laugh at all the best worst life hacks there are!

Speedweed · 19/10/2022 16:26

Best TAB tip was the one where a woman repurposed her old loo seat on the wall as a photo frame for a pic of her dead husband, and by flipping the seat down she had somewhere to rest her coffee.

Beautiful.

I can’t ever move past her suggestion that we should individually peg crisp packets to a curtain pole… I mean who actually has time for that??!

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 16:28

@Mykittensmittens what on earth was the purposes for pegging crisp packets? What was it a 'hack' for?

In fairness I think he got this already going without even realising what I was recreating!

Handbag hack for you OP (lunch sorted too)

Can’t imagine being in such an emergency that I’m using a pitta bread as a bag and still considering lipstick an essential item.

‘Organising’ and it’s cited as a hack. Made my head hurt somewhat!! Sorry the link is to OK Mag

Well there you go then. You're officially a hacker 😁

LookItsMeAgain · 19/10/2022 16:40

The one that I think is a decent enough tip (though not a hack) is if you have ring top curtains in your living room put a toilet roll insert (either cut in half along the circumference of the cardboard) and put them on the curtain pole between each of the rings to give that polished finish to how your curtains look. Not sure I've described it right but it does make the curtains look well when they are open.
