IT'S NOT A HACK!

ParentConfessionTime · 19/10/2022 14:51

I know iABU but my reels on Insta and FB (yes I'm unreasonable to use SM!) are full of HACKS.

Except....I wouldn't consider any of them hacks!

-'Short Hair Hack' - video of girl using Kirby grips to pull back some of her fringe...THIS IS JUST A HAIRSTYLE

-Important life hack' - video shows how you should take a photo of important things like business cards in case you lose them... THIS IS JIST COMMON SENSE?

-'Ironing hack' - video shows someone ... wait for it.... turning a shirt over so buttons are face down and they don't have to iron around them.... WHAT? WHY WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING BUT THIS?

Yes, I'm unreasonably angry about this...yes I'm using too many capital letters... yes I need to give my head a wobble as there are worse things going on

Any other hacks that aren't hacks that people have rolled eyes at?

Lighthearted obvs

My favourite top tip:

Don't squat in nettles.

Cagedbirdsinging · 20/10/2022 01:37

Tie a piece of string to each of your possessions so you'll never lose anything again ...simple!
To save time when painting a kitchen wall pop a shower-cap over the clock..hey presto!
Stop shirt buttons making an irritating clinking noise in the washing machine by cutting them all off ...voila!

Why can they not use the correct word - TIP !

Agree with you! They are tips or hints, not hacks.

My favourite top tip:

I actually did this once 😂

BritWifeInUSA · 20/10/2022 06:01

My favorite Viz tip from years ago was: if your child is choking on an ice cube, tip boiling water down their throat and it’ll melt the ice cube in no time.

Hustle…I live in the US and here it means to work hard. We use it a lot to mean just that - work hard. Nothing dodgy.

CircleofWillis · 20/10/2022 06:18

My favourite tip from that Viz link is this one:

"OLD telephone directories make ideal personal address books. Simply cross out the names and address of people you don't know."

Hack was a horsey term in my day !

@BlackCatTabbyCat

You hook the corners of the fitted sheet over your hands and then over each other to to get a rough rectangle shape and then use a surface to fold it up to finish. This link isn't the 'hack' article I initially saw, but the video on that page shows exactly what I mean.

www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/organizing/a26147205/how-to-fold-a-fitted-sheet/

Except they missed one vital part that's been done since the invention of fitted sheets.. .... when you fold into the final thirds, tuck one side into the other's 'fold' and then it's less likely to fall apart when you shuffle stuff in your cupboard, and helps prevent you picking up part of a fitted sheet when you move part of the pile hunting for other stuff.

Maireas · 20/10/2022 06:54

On another thread someone gave a hack linking an insurance company to discounts at a coffee shop.
By naming neither.

Maireas · 20/10/2022 06:56

Here's a hack for teachers: can't be arsed to learn all those names?
Just call out Archie or Izzy. You'll be right most of the time.

Ah yes, 5 minute Crafts on FB... I can't imagine a scenario where I would go hiking without my coat or snacks but remember multiple rolls of clingfilm.

My favorite...

That's. Just. Genius.

Please share this hack 👀 I'm still rolling mine into a ball.

Fold it down the middle. Tuck one end inside the other. You'll end up with a rectangle with two rounded corners. Does that make sense? Then you can fold it. Maybe YouTube it 😆

Schulte · 20/10/2022 07:21

‘turning a shirt over so buttons are face down and they don't have to iron around them’

I didn’t know about this one! Those hacks are for ignorant people like me.

Popvan · 20/10/2022 07:24

I read one years ago - To stop streaming eyes when cutting up an onion, push the bread knife into a loaf of bread first.
It's kind of a family joke now when we get a fresh loaf someone will say, I need to cut up an onion.

LoopDiL00p · 19/10/2022 14:55

I once saw a 'How to fold a fitting sheet hack'. Admittedly I do use that method every time now, but I agree it's not a hack.

In my excitement, I showed my mum in law and she just rolled her eyes at me and told me she's been doing it that way for years

I saw one with a good looking guy in his pants demonstrating it recently. I still roll them into a ball :)

Mrs Hinch had a very similar “hack”. She bought these slippers with mop material on the soles and she just flings cleaner on the floor and shuffles around instead of actually using a mop.

When my three children were of that sort of age, I used to put polish on our parquet floor, tie dusters to their feet and they had great fun skating about and shining up the floor at the same time.

It's not a HACK though.

HairyMcLarie · 20/10/2022 08:31

Someone started a thread on here yesterday called 'coffee shop hack!' Turns out if you buy some form of insurance you get a discount of a certain coffee shop.

That's just a fucking offer. NOT A HACK!

CaptainMyCaptain · 20/10/2022 08:40

When I've mopped my hard floors I use cloths under my feet to dry the bits I want to walk on. I never thought of it as a hack though.

RudsyFarmer · 20/10/2022 08:44

I’ve never heard that ironing hack either!!

@LoopDiL00p just realised that's a reaction to the original. I don't understand TikTok enough to get back to the original. Worth watching though, several times
