Dear Lord above, I've seen people removed and banned from pubs for less. She's the Home Secretary. What have we come to?

How can it no longer be a confidence vote when so many are going to rebel? Surely the very epitomy of lost confidence, or does it work in a different way?

Apparently it's no longer a confidence vote but the whips can't confirm whether if they vote against whether they will lose the party whip.

Hence the 'absolute scenes' in the lobby that Phillips is commenting on above.

Total car crash. No one in charge.

The only reason I am voting against the Labour motion is because I will not give them control of the order paper - and I will retain my say in who is Prime Minister.

Government announces the fracking vote is no longer a confidence vote - because of the scale of the expected rebellion by Tory MPs. Truss could not afford to expel them. It is no longer clear what authority she has over her party. Extraordinary. Yes (yawn), another u-turn

Anyone nostalgic for the strong and stable government of Theresa May...?

Strong and stable under Theresa May? It certainly wasn’t! She went when the party lost confidence in her! It was all about Brexit deals back then.
I do wish we could go back to 2019 though..

RafaistheKingofClay · 19/10/2022 19:14

It really is going back to some of May’s Brexit votes, isn’t it. Memorably the one where they ended up having to do a complete about turn and whip their MPs to vote against their own Bill.

I’ve never seen scenes like it at the entrance to a voting lobby. Tories on open warfare. Jostling and Rees Mogg shouting at his colleagues. Whips screaming at Tories.
They are done and should call a general election.
Two Tory whips dragging people in. Shocking.

BREAKING: The House of Commons votes by 326 to 230 against banning fracking, despite the Government's own manifesto pledge not to allow shale gas extraction in the UK.

So far today the home secretary has quit, a Downing Street adviser was suspended for allegedly briefing Javid was "shit", the prime minister u-turned on pensions, the Government essentially called a vote of confidence in itself and two more ministers were put on resignation watch

I wonder what first attracted at liztruss to the idea of appointing at grantshapps - the leading organiser of backbench rebellions & at RishiSunak backer - to be her new Home Secretary?

Thats brutal. And from a bbc journo.

Do we know ministers are on resignation watch?

titchy · 19/10/2022 19:27

Why would whips resign having achieved a thumping majority? Unless their conduct is to be called into question?

Time for the army to stage a coup and declare a General Election with King Charle's signing it off under some probably obscure 17th obscure legislation that hasn't been rescinded.
