To have had tears in my eyes watching Mark Drakefords outburst today

The all encompassing anger he obviously feels towards the Tories and what they’ve done to our country, was something I feel so strongly too.

I found it so refreshing that someone in UK politics, who regardless of whether you agree with his politics or not is undeniably principled, has finally spoken out in this way

Drakeford wrecked Wales during covid how short memories people have

Exactly, too funny.

I thought we were in unprecedented times so people were just trying to make the best decisions with the information that they had available to them at the time when the numbers were going over 1000 dead a day didn’t look too outrageous. Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Drakeford is utterly despicable. Have you seen what he’s done to the NHS in Wales. He has blood on his hands

Is Drakeford able to alter the amount of money the NHS gets given, or is that a Tory decision?

It’s set by the Barnett Formula (a temporary measure from the 1970s).

It basically calculates changes to government budgets which are devolved by population. Takes no account of factors like elderly population or rurality

For every £1 spent in England on healthcare it costs Wales £1.25 to do the same thing.

THEDEACON · 18/10/2022 21:30

I haven't seen it yet but I know I will agree The Scottish FM said last week she detests the Tories( and all they stand for ) Nicola was seriously criticised I agree with her

InterestQ · 18/10/2022 21:31

Didn’t he do well to avoid actually answering the actual question he was asked about the NHS in wales which Labour has driven into the ground despite no Tory government there. Nice bit of deflection. Dreadful lockdown maniac.

OverTheHillAndDownTotherSide · 18/10/2022 21:31

Once the money (block grant) is given to Wales, it is up to Welsh Ministers how it is spend. A larger proportion is spent on Health and Education than in England.

F4chrissakes · 18/10/2022 21:32

Upthread there is a glowing reference to Gordon Brown. Is the the same Gordon Brown who off loaded our gold reserves just before gold went up in price? Is this the same Gordon Brown who altered the tax on pension funds causing companies who had final salary pension schemes to close them down? Now you have to be a civil servant (or an MP) to belong to a final salary scheme. If not, your pension depends on the markets, and look where they are lately.

whatistheworld · 18/10/2022 21:33

he is spot on! The incompetence and arrogance is unbelievable. The Tories, like Jacob Rees-Mogg can lie and patronise to make it seem that NONE of this is the fault of the Tory party or their mini budget or Brexit. (which is a failure) Unfortunately Project fear wins both times. I say that as someone that wants the best for the country.
I heard a Tory argue against a general election being in the national interest yesterday because we need a strong opposition. The arrogance is astonishing

HighlyV · 18/10/2022 21:37

Mark Drakefords
👏👏

Yes quite, and I get pissed off with the Senedd being scapegoated by the Tories when the Tories set the budget, and we all know the budget is not high enough!

Brown managed not to crash the entire economy within a month of taking his job.

There is no comparison with this absolute shower of shite government we have now.

BarnabyRocks · 18/10/2022 21:46

So true. His anger was authentic and it was so refreshing to hear a politician just say it exactly like it is. He speaks for so many people, the overwhelming majority in the UK I think/hope? Made me wish I was Welsh! He and Martin Sheen should just take charge of everything I think!

reigatecastle · 18/10/2022 21:49

He was ridiculous over covid but I agree with him here!

Hindsight, $ & stock markets rising, and Brown sold off 50% of Gold not all of it.

Did Brown have the IMF on his back? or 12 years and counting of Austerity? wreck relations with Europe?

FS pensions? they have always been unsustainable, far too higher liabilities, with employers having to pay in 20% plus to make them work... what do you think they invest in? Smarties?

Yes SM's are down, helped along by an idiot Tory.

You sound like you don't actually understand what your talking about.

I know we have our issues in Wales and I am far from a labour supporter but where we are currently in the UK is more than politics it’s about humanity. Today he made me have some hope that there are still some politicians who genuinely care about what’s happening to normal people in the UK.

How can you be far from a Labour supporter?

Look at the mess we are in due to the the suss Truss. Labour aren't perfect and their leader is a smarmy so and so but the Tories need to go and never return.

Packing my bags and emigrating. This country is down the Swan.

Also I don't know who this man is (Scouse) but I love him!

springhassprung22 · 18/10/2022 21:52

Absolutely, well done him! I also live in Wales and got very fed up with his over the top lockdown rules (remember when we couldn’t buy kettles and pants in Tesco?!) but at heart I believe he is a decent politician, genuinely cares and tries to do the right thing and this exchange shows that! So powerful, he is absolutely raging and usually very calm and measured.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/10/2022 21:53

He can't help what his son did. Your comment is totally uncalled for.

If you disagree with his politics, then present an argument instead of blaming him for something his child did.

Lily073 · 18/10/2022 21:53

pattihews · 18/10/2022 20:58

I live in Wales and I've voted Labour at every election so far. I don't know if I will again.

It's beginning to occur to me that Labour have been in charge of Wales for more than 20 years and yet still we have the same old problems.

It also occurs to me that this is the same Mark Drakeford who says that transpeople are the most oppressed minority in Wales and whose government is determined to drive a coach and horses through women's rights in order to be 'progressive'. This is the man who for four years has refused to meet with representatives of women's groups and organisations because Stonewall Cymru tell him not to.

So I'm not joining in the knee-jerk 'Isn't he great?' number.

I agree. It's a shame he doesn't feel the same emotion for what's happening in his own country. The continuing shit show that is Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is a truly catastrophic failing.

emmylousings · 18/10/2022 21:59

Agreed with everything he said, and thought it was quite moving.

Againstmachine · 18/10/2022 22:03

I won't vote for labour I don't care what you say I'm from a certain town which labour let paedophiles run wild.

It's ok saying this is better than truss, is this our aim the least worse person surely we should aim higher.

Kualma · 18/10/2022 22:03

People wishing they had Mark Drakeford as their leader should be careful what they wish for...

RobynNora · 18/10/2022 22:11

He’s a sincere and sensible man who most people respect, even if they don’t always agree with him. His staff speak very highly of him too. ‘The rest is politics’ podcast did a good interview recently for non welshies wanting to learn more.

user1471600850 · 18/10/2022 22:16

OMG are you mad! He is a delusioned power seeker who everyone in Wales detests and I am Welsh!! I agree with what he says about the Tories but please don't big him up and praise him because he is no better to be honest!!!

Please don't speak to all Welsh people. Theres a good few on this thread, me included who feel he's a very good leader

H1Drangea · 18/10/2022 22:26

I live in Wales , and I can’t think of anything nice to say about him
He’s a power mad dictator , too big for his boots , and like all Labour politicians can’t think of anything constructive to say , so blames someone else
Labour have controlled Wales for years , look how well that’s turned out
