To have had tears in my eyes watching Mark Drakefords outburst today

The all encompassing anger he obviously feels towards the Tories and what they’ve done to our country, was something I feel so strongly too.

I found it so refreshing that someone in UK politics, who regardless of whether you agree with his politics or not is undeniably principled, has finally spoken out in this way

Hes not a great guy. He's a control freak and the way his sons (I do accept he has his own difficulties) crimes were dealt with left me feeling very cynical about the man

YANBU, had a tear in my eyes too. He has also worked hard to mitigate the loss of ErasmusPlus for young people by putting in place a Welsh international learning exchange programme. Saying that, he should not have had to do that, ex-PM Johnson promised that staying in ErasmusPlus was not in doubt - he lied of course.

@Guavafish1 I think…hope… the tide is turning now and the public are beyond the point of confusion. Once things start hitting people in their pockets it’s hard not to have your eyes opened.

The Tories want us to think that all politicians are awful and self serving and that we can't do better as a county, but we can. In Wales, we already do.

People will rightly disagree with policy positions but Mark Drakeford is a man of principle.

latelydaydreams · 18/10/2022 20:44

Regardless of your politics, his genuine feeling speaks volumes.

cansu · 18/10/2022 20:44

It was very striking to hear such sincerity actually. I agreed with everything he said. He really wiped the floor with him.

MrsMinted · 18/10/2022 20:46

It made me well up too. I thought I was being soft. Kind of glad to discover I wasn't the only one.

Hbh17 · 18/10/2022 20:48

The same Mark Drakeford who was so spineless during the pandemic and wanted to keep the entire country locked up indefinitely? I can't begin to say what I actually think about him...

ScarlettnotOHara · 18/10/2022 20:54

I live in Wales, I saw Mark Drakeford open a concert in Cardiff to welcome Ukrainian people . I was very impressed and he seems to be very genuine !! Huge respect for him !

Igotjelly · 18/10/2022 20:56

Absolutely agree with him. I’m Scottish and was reading recently that Liz Truss has yet to so much as pick up the phone to Nicola Sturgeon or Mark Drakeford. Frankly that’s absolutely unacceptable. They are our elected leaders!

pattihews · 18/10/2022 20:58

I live in Wales and I've voted Labour at every election so far. I don't know if I will again.

It's beginning to occur to me that Labour have been in charge of Wales for more than 20 years and yet still we have the same old problems.

It also occurs to me that this is the same Mark Drakeford who says that transpeople are the most oppressed minority in Wales and whose government is determined to drive a coach and horses through women's rights in order to be 'progressive'. This is the man who for four years has refused to meet with representatives of women's groups and organisations because Stonewall Cymru tell him not to.

So I'm not joining in the knee-jerk 'Isn't he great?' number.

hesbeingabitofadick · 18/10/2022 20:59

If only all politicians who disagree with the Tories fucking over the country could have such passion.

Searchingforsun · 18/10/2022 21:00

I don’t agree with the lockdown stance Drakeford took in Wales either, my DH was in hospital for 11 weeks last year (not covid) and I couldn’t visit once but I still believe that he was doing what he felt was right.

No politician can please everyone but the least we can ask for is that they are principled and care about the people they represent and I believe he does at least care.

If we’re going to get the change in UK wide politics we need it has to come from politicians who care.

Is this the same Mark Drakeford who put Wales through some of the most punitive lockdowns across the UK? And he has the gall to talk about others destroying the country?

Whatafustercluck · 18/10/2022 21:03

Totally agree. And I wish I lived in Wales or Scotland.

Againstmachine · 18/10/2022 21:05

Drakeford wrecked Wales during covid how short memories people have

I don’t get the love after this. I get people would prefer to live there but not for me

Efrogwraig · 18/10/2022 21:08

He is a rock star. He has not put a foot wrong. He has been thoughtful & considered in his actions during the pandemic. That is why his righteous anger today was so effective. Even the mild mannered are angry.

Even Yvette Cooper was on fire today:

Exactly, too funny.

GreenLunchBox · 18/10/2022 21:14

I agree OP

And I came across this speech by Gordon Brown today while listening to a podcast and I actually started crying. Surprising, because these days I hate the UK and hope it burns to the ground (or so I say to myself because of the fuckers we have in charge).

This is from when we had a government who actually gave a fuck about it's people:

Drakeford is utterly despicable. Have you seen what he’s done to the NHS in Wales. He has blood on his hands

The Tories have blood on their hands

Corrected it for you

letmeeatcrisps · 18/10/2022 21:18

shame about his rapist son . The victim was a child and left pregnant by a “prolonged” attack.

kateandme · 18/10/2022 21:22

There are enough racist, bigoted, selfish, rich, empathy barren judgmental bastards though to keep tories in power.who both consciously and subconsciously beleive the same.

kateandme · 18/10/2022 21:23

Some of the angry people on the news upset at what the tories are doing will in the next breathe think those people need to stop taking our jobs or shouldn’t be allowed to stay. Or call those on benefits lazy.
