Will Liz Truss resign today?

Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

So 12 years in power and pensions funds nearly literally blew up is there anybody left that thinks the Tories can manage the economy? If so I have a bridge you may like to buy...

The problem is there are financial timebombs all over the global economy -Gordon Brown's 'saving the world' with ultra-low interest rates and QE kicked the can down the road. We are now at the end of that road and it looks like it is going to be blood, sweat and tears.

The investment banks and the hedge funds are the real rulers of the world and they get to vote continuously whilst skimming huge wealth from the sweat of others. They are parasites of late-stage capitalism. Hey ho.

BirmaBrite · 17/10/2022 11:43

Well Hunt has left her with nothing to say other than 'Putins war in Ukraine' that is the total sum of what she has left !

RedToothBrush · 17/10/2022 11:44

The frightening thing here, is if stability isn't found then there is even less available for things like education.

Truss's entire vision is a busted flush. It HAS to mean she is too.

Quite what happens if she goes is a bigger question. Technically the Deputy PM Teresa Coffey is the default number 2. The party can not do another leadership election (cos stability).

That kind of embeds Jezza as Chancellor if the markets respond well. So he HAS to stay. And any new PM MUST be appointment unanimously by the party. The rumours are Sunak or Wallace.

Wallace perhaps is needed still for stability of defence and didn't seem to want the job. And this is not dissimilar to the Sunak economic mobile...

I dunno. But fucking hell politics is screwed up.

FWIW, a general election right now, is not necessarily in the national interests because markets need a few months of stability at the very least. Realistically it needs to be 12 months. (I stress this doesn't necessarily reflect my political leanings!) Instabililty and change are the thing that are spooking the markets unfortunately... (Arguably you need the Tories to stay in government to 'own this' too).

Great, mortgage rates tripling and now no energy cost protection. What a disaster this is going to be next winter.

BirmaBrite · 17/10/2022 11:47

After that announcement, I wouldn't be suprised if she did go today.

caffelattetogo · 17/10/2022 11:48

She wont resign - they will have to drag her out. I'd guess she will be gone by Christmas though. Disaster for the Conservatives, and for us all as interest rates will not come down again. The sooner Labour can take over the better.

Hopefully the war will end - if it does things could improve if not and it goes on for years it’s going to be tough no matter what as there’s no room to borrow more

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 11:49

Well, the war caused the energy crisis , but now that help will be pulled in seven months and then we're all on our own
The companies won't be in a rush to help out : i m only hoping they can come up with something though ! Having people paying something is better than nothing and even rationing has to be better than having bills the size of a small mortgage.
It's a worrying thought that you may lose your home because you put the lights on on top of everything else

sunnydaytoday0 · 17/10/2022 11:49

I wonder if we might see any Tories crossing the floor on Wednesday. We've already seen it happen once so far this year.

If anyone ever needed proof that the type of people who choose to go into politics are often not the type of people we need to be politicians, Liz Truss is a fantastic example.

I am glad she knows what a woman is, but all by itself it just isn't enough.
Sadly, bad as she is I genuinely believe the Labour party will be worse.

I expect the next general election will be a mess as I can't vote Conservative or Labour so I'll be at the mercy of whichever random other party decides to stand near me - not all of them bother.

BirmaBrite · 17/10/2022 11:52

I think the war is going to get tricky as we head into Winter, Ukrainian mud as the Russians discovered initially, makes for hard going.

HotWashCycle · 17/10/2022 11:56

If she had a shred of decency she would resign now. It does not seem to be commented on in the media, but as she has had to go back on every one of the policies she was elected as leader for, it is plain dishonest of her to stay in power now. Her new chancellor is doing all the things that her leadership opponent advocated. It is a matter of honour that she should go. Not that there is any or much of that in the tory party,

Randomword6 · 17/10/2022 11:58

Kellie45 · 17/10/2022 06:41

And an even worse party will be in with even worse financial management and wokeness. I think you have this incredible naivete that just by putting another lot in things will get better.

You're wrong about Labour. The economy has always been healthier under Labour, by every measure. Also they will try to bring about a fairer and more liveable society. Do you really want the current regime to continue?

SleeplessInEngland · 17/10/2022 11:58

Incredibly they still haven't decided to implement a windfall tax, which would surely be the easiest win on the table right now.

motherofgodhaudyerwheesht · 17/10/2022 12:00

Liz will go, and hopefully that will also bring an end to the dreadful unedifying, prurient press coverage which is so depressing to see (whoever is the target). But Liz didn't elect herself, and didn't come up with the "growth growth growth" strategy herself. Save some of your ire for all those MPs, and all those unelected party members who supported her (and Kwarteng) and put us in this mortifyingly embarrassing situation and the broadly irreversible, deep financial shit. Clueless, entitled, self-serving idiots the lot of them.

Worth also noting that while humiliation on the world stage may be er, humiliating, the £six figure annual consolation surely softens the blow.

if this doesn't hasten parliamentary reform, nothing will.

DeborahVance · 17/10/2022 12:00

She can't hang on after Hunt's statement. I think she'll be gone before PMQs on Wednesday

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 17/10/2022 12:00

I suppose it depends what they're actually aiming to achieve at the moment.

The UK has become the biggest joke, ever.

We really have. Since Brexit we have just looked chaotic to the outside world.

Blocked · 17/10/2022 12:01

Would things change under Labour?
Yes, they would.

Will Liz Truss resign today?
RedToothBrush · 17/10/2022 12:02

IndigoC · 17/10/2022 11:46

Great, mortgage rates tripling and now no energy cost protection. What a disaster this is going to be next winter.

Except its not necessarily that straightforward.

Stability in the market will prevent interest rates going as high, and energy prices are now failing, perhaps faster than expected and fears about energy prices should drive useage down which will in turn reduce demand and therefore prices.

Yes I know, it makes no sense and is counterintuitive. It isn't good but its not necessarily as bad as you think either.

PMQs would be agonising for her after today. An utter shambles.

Absolutely. I thought this twitter thread from Stephen Bush was interesting, though I don't agree with all his analysis. But he has the facts correct

twitter.com/stephenkb/status/1581257845340635138

None of this could've happened if the MPs had had the brains not to present her to the wider membership. It was known well in advance that she was polling well amongst them, and the Tories have the advantage of a leadership system that allows MPs more opportunity to prevent the unelectable from getting on the ballot or indeed there being a ballot in the first place. They pissed it away.

That's occurred to me too. Might be the only way that some of these MPs will retain a job post the next election.

derxa · 17/10/2022 12:05

Alexandra2001 · 17/10/2022 11:38

Not to wish anyone dead at all but her decisions will cause people to really suffer.. inflation.... council tax rises... mortgage holders, people retiring shortly.. their savings ...public spending cuts...

Real world effects.

I ve no idea if people will die as result as what she/tory party has done but it wont be far short.

Oh calm down. This is in the same vein as stating that children are starving to death under the Tories.

MeowMeowPowerRangers · 17/10/2022 12:06

Where is she? Jeremy Cunt seems to be acting like PM right now - god help us all.
