Or maybe Tuesday at the latest? Would she really want to face the absolute public humiliation of PMQs on Wednesday?

From Twitter:

BREAKING:
Jeremy Hunt is poised to announce that the energy price guarantee will only remain universal until April
It will then become targeted and capped

If this is true that's not the 2 years Truss promised just 5 days ago.

pointythings · 17/10/2022 11:00

@lannistunut I'm not at all confused, the point I was making was that concern around voters' opinion of the Tories goes much wider than just the pollsters. It feels as if the organisations sponsoring these surveys have their own concerns about Tory competence, or lack thereof. Which is actually bad for the conservatives. yay

Make your mind up.

Voters can visit the website to look for policies - but there aren't any so yes we do have to rely on propagandists.

As per your second post to me voters are being unreasonable in wanting policies before a GE is called which renders your first snippy answer redundant.

Have more respect for the electorate. Political parties need us and I am rapidly coming to the conclusion we really don't need them.

I’m only quoting you in case anyone actually believes you.

Policies aren’t set in stone until a manifesto is compiled and released prior to a general election (because otherwise it would be constantly changing as situations arise and develop) but it’s easy to get a flavour of the direction they’re heading in labourlist.org/2022/10/the-content-of-every-policy-motion-passed-at-labour-conference-2022/?amp

I don’t put much weight behind an opinion that doesn’t acknowledge a lack of understanding of the system to be honest. But that’s just me.

Yes, I did include a caveat about you personally - I agree concern is very widespread as it is genuinely about national reputation/standing now, far beyond politics.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 17/10/2022 11:04

She should resign but I don't think she will.

Labour members pay to support the party, they do not have to be paid for their opinions.

As in Rest in ..... blobs gonna blob ...

I've no idea what you're talking about.

the80sweregreat · 17/10/2022 11:06

So, for many people the energy bills could end up at 7k a year as the predicted before the energy price cap was brought in :(
Maybe the energy companies will have to arrange loans for people and we pay it back as we can. They will have to come up with something as even those on middle incomes will struggle. It's time for them to work with the companies to make sure that people can afford the basics at least , even if you only have so many units per household or something ( hence meters will become compulsory like water ones are for some people if you move home etc)

millymog11 · 17/10/2022 11:06

In answer to OP, no of course we are not about to see the departure of Liz Truss. We had Boris for 3 years and 44 days ffs. Nothing has changed about politics, if anything Boris gives her licence to stay in even longer than she would have before Boris.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/10/2022 11:06

Nadine Dorries has called for the tories to Bring Back Boris, in case you were wondering how she felt about all this.

If true, this is horrendous.

I come back to: people will be no better off because any help will have been u-turned AND mortgages/rents will have gone up considerably in the meantime.

Truss couldn't have done a worse job if she'd taken a baseball bat and gone around smashing up homes.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 17/10/2022 11:13

Basic rate of income tax to remain at 20p indefinitely...

GottaGetOutofDairy · 17/10/2022 11:16

NI rise cancellation has been kept

A poor taste 'joke' 😀

I hope she does. I wish her peace.

Cornettoninja · 17/10/2022 11:16

The energy policy is now what labour proposed (except for the funding of it). They proposed 6 months support and then review.

We would have been pleased to hear this back in September - Liz and co have grifted our expectations.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/10/2022 11:18

Austerity here we come.

The 2 year energy price guarantee was the best thing to come out of the mini-budget. It will be truly shit if it’s scrapped, as it would’ve helped a lot of people. I’m not a Truss or Tory supporter, but I was glad about the guarantee. Hope it doesn’t get scrapped.

GottaGetOutofDairy · 17/10/2022 11:19

It's scrapped.

Only guaranteed until April, reviewed then and followed with the statement "there will be more difficult decisions to be made"

FourForYouGlenCocoYouGoGlenCoco · 17/10/2022 11:19

If the energy price guarantee stops in April, winter next year is going to be delightful…. Ffs

There are people with convictions, beliefs and wanting to see out county in a better place then the dire place we are. It's not all about the money you know.

There us such a thing as society as much as Thatcher derided that concept.

mrsparsnip · 17/10/2022 11:19

In my opinion, Liz Truss tried something new. She tried to focus on establishing economic growth and turning our backs on austerity. She wanted an economy that encouraged investment and rewarded 'hard work' and great ideas. It was a very Conservative manifesto.

Yet, it was so badly thought out. Huge flaws with respect to the perceived distribution of wealth, and lack of accountability were overlooked. These are flaws that a Prime Minister and her advisors should have seen, and the fact that they were blind to them sends out huge messages of incompetence.

Liz Truss will resign. She has to. To save face, she could say she took a gamble, but it did not work, but when someone has made such hugely damaging mistakes, there is only one option.

In fairness, I believe Boris Johnson was equally incompetent, but crisis after crisis helped to mask his ineptitude (no government got everything right during the pandemic, and his stand for Ukraine, although possibly a distraction, was a positive move).

I agree that the time has come for a general election.

SleeplessInEngland · 17/10/2022 11:20

Hunt will probably become PM soon, who else would want the job with eletoral oblivion on the horizon?

That makes no sense to me to scrap it. It makes political sense to keep it, as it was welcomed by so many people. I know it’ll be expensive, but I would’ve thought they could’ve perhaps afforded it once they’d rowed back on all the other commitments in the mini-budget e.g. once they’d reversed scrapping the top tax rate!

100% agree with everything you’ve said here. It was a very very Conservative budget. Great if you’re a Conservative, awful if you’re not. But whether you’re Conservative or not, you will lose out, because, as you say, it was so badly thought through. I can’t believe they were planning for all the tax cuts to be unfunded ffs.
