I hope Johnson won't get 100 nominations. With any luck they'll get it down to two candidates quickly and one of them will be put under pressure to drop out so that the membership don't get to vote.

Who could get 100 nominations? Sunak, Mordaunt, Johnson

I would be happy with any of those candidates - all three seem very electable to me.

I believe they will push the weakest candidate to drop out so there is someone on office by next weekend I think Rishi Sunak and Penny Mordant could be persuaded to back each other for a top job one PM the other foreign or home secretart Jeremy Hunt staying as chancellor not necessarily the preferred option but perhaps stability until GE there is no way a GE will be called by Tories

@Clavinova - I am not much of a Tory voter but the only one who is competent for the economy wild ride we have for next two years is Sunak.

I would be worried about who Johnson would have as his chancellor. He bears grudges and makes highly personalized decisions. See sacking of Gove, stupid parties etc.

Johnson is an amoral liar, total chancer but arrogant enough to think the country needs more of him. We don't - and don't need any more Tories - we need a General Election.

Oh and Liz - as for you ignoring the Scots? Your own part is ignoring you!

If he thinks he can get enough support among MPs to get into the final two, he will stand and he will win.

@HRTQueen - they are unless they significantly improve their decision making. Johnson has created a party of jellies, easily swayed, lacking independence of mind, cowed and beaten. That is why this mess has existed. It isn't just Truss.

One thing the Tories will do is change tactics to stay in power

Two leaders pushed to resign in a matter of months but they are still there the believe they should be in power there will be no early GE as much as possible will be done to win back voters

dont ever under estimate the Tories as a party that will do anything to be in power. This time next year the polls will not be so favourable to Labour. Labour have to stay focused on not just winning the next GE but the following to undo some of the damage done

and as I said before voters are fickle and willing to forget

How do you know?

3 months ago no one could have predicted Labours massive lead and the SNP as the only opposition.

Report
LexMitior · 20/10/2022 19:41

I reckon it's simple.

Johnson has been on holiday.

However, his rivals have been building their cases for leadership for months.

Graham Brady has announced a contest that he already knows the answer to.

The answer is Sunak and Mordaunt.

The ERG and Brexit factions will have to share. They would back Johnson, but I think it's not enough. If the Conservatives want to preserve themselves, they will stick between these two candidates and not give the membership the choice, because their last two picks in Johnson and Truss have been dire.

This is the parliamentary party gaming the rules. There is a vote but not a vote for the membership.

And do you think the Tories are ignoring this ?

do you think Truss choose to go ?

and doesn’t that just prove how fickle voters can be that many are not so staunch on their support for one party. Voters can be swayed again

Sunak would be an absolute gift to Labour. He's married to a billionaire and we're in a spiralling cost of living crisis. The digs write themselves.

Back in the summer, certain polls showed that Mordaunt was the only leadership candidate likely to beat Labour in a general election. Ahead of Sunak and way ahead of Truss. Now obviously a lot’s changed in the subsequent weeks. But I think she’s still got broader appeal than most of the other likely runners.

Johnson is not even yesterday’s man. He’s last week’s man. Not to mention a weak man. His own cabinet and party resigned around him in protest of his inability to run a coherent administration that had the confidence of the cabinet, let alone the party. That was only a few weeks ago. If he catapults himself back into No 10 now it will look like the grossest mockery of political process.

It will cast a stain on all Tories, including the competent and diligent ones. It will be a national embarrassment.

No genuine, considerate, compassionate conservative should want Johnson back. If you’re serious about your party at all, it has to go a different way. Forward, not back.

I knew Penny for a few years when we were all younger. For a number of reasons, I would never , ever have seen her as a prospective PM. She does not have the essential soft skills required to reach out to non Tories. She is completely Planet Tory.
