When did your world go quiet?

inspired by a tiktok trend recently, just thought it might be an interesting thread. I’m a regular poster not a journalist or anything like that (MNHQ can verify!).

When did your world go quiet? Basically, what was a time you got a fright and time seemed to stop or go quiet?

mine was I was on my horse and he decided to rear up, over concrete ground, and I felt him wobble back. As soon as I felt that first tilt backwards everything sort of went quiet and it was like an out of body experience (not a good one!). I couldn’t hear anyone around. I just remember the last thing I thought was along the lines of this is it im about to die and it was like everything was in slow motion. Luckily it was all ok but that split second was easily the scariest moment of my life and my world completely stopped.

So, when did your world go quiet?

I’ve twice been a passenger in car accidents and they both moved in slow motion.

autienotnaughty · 12/10/2022 21:07

In labour and the pain was so extreme I left my body and watched my self from above.

Mezmer · 12/10/2022 21:08

When me and the fam were in an Uber in New Jersey and he took us off the beaten track and down a back road and went all weird. My heart was in my mouth. I was pretty convinced that we were about to have a knife pulled out on us. It turned out he was stoned and had got lost but my husband thought exactly the same. For a good five minutes I felt pure terror and panic rise up and I never want to feel like that again

AssumingDirectControl · 12/10/2022 21:08

Similarly, passenger in car accident, it was like it happened in stop motion.

Member869894 · 12/10/2022 21:10

this happened to me watching my mum die . As she exhaled for the last time I got a real sense of time standing still for a few moments

Florencenotflo · 12/10/2022 21:10

Losing sight of dd2 for about 3 mins. The longest 3 mins of my life and I would have believed you if you'd told me it was 3 hours.

I was down the seafront with a friend and her 2 girls and my 2 daughters. We were in the gardens on the seafront, they are sunken down slightly and you can't see the road or sea without walking up the slopes at either end.

The kids were all playing. Dd1 suddenly fell straight off of her bike face first into gravel. I ran over to her and started calming her down. Dd2 was in my line of sight, then she was gone. There are 4 exits from these gardens, 2 lead to the road, 2 lead to the promenade/beach/water.

I honestly didn't know which way to look for her first. I couldn't get my words out to tell my friend. I was shouting her name and my friend must have realised and started looking too.

She was about 20 ft from us, sat behind a statue playing with some stones. Completely unaware of the panic going on 😂

When my daughter was born not breathing.

mackthepony · 12/10/2022 21:12

DS throwing himself in the pool around 18 months old

DD standing on the edge of a long drop into deep water aged 3 ish

I sound negligent but I'm really not!

I didn't sleep for a week after both incidents

Singlebutmarried · 12/10/2022 21:12

In hospital on Christmas Eve.

I knew I was very I’ll but hadn’t told DH or DD

i wasn’t sure I was going home.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 12/10/2022 21:14

Ooh great topic. I was on a plane a few years back and it took off even though a typhoon had hit that part of southeast asia. The turbulance was unreal and I saw lightning in the clouds around us.
I was saying a lot of Hail Marys on that flight!

bloodywhitecat · 12/10/2022 21:17

The moment DH woke from his syringe driver induced sleep looked for me, reached out his hand to me and breathed his last breath.

Pinkywoo · 12/10/2022 21:17

I was a front passenger in a head on car crash, and when I realised what was about to happen everything went into slow motion. It was strange though, I felt very calm as I watched the other car coming towards us.

Pinkywoo · 12/10/2022 21:18

Remainiac · 12/10/2022 21:19

In labour with DS2, epidural and saline drip in place. Saline ran out, massive BP crash and I felt myself fading out. I remember thinking that if this is dying it’s ok.

When I was in a car accident.
When my dd was born not breathing...the wait whilst they got her breathing was interminable.
When she told me and her dad two years ago that she thought about taking her life every day 😞
That was by far the worst thing I've ever heard in my life and I couldn't sleep for weeks.

Userg1234 · 12/10/2022 21:20

I'm male and grew up in a port. About 20 years old when my mates and I stepped in to help 2 girls we knew being hassled by some sailors from the far east. We chased them off and suddenly rounding the corner were these 10 or so blokes with about 30 mates, there was 6 of us.
It was a port, it was the 1980s and I was a football fan, I'm working class so I'd been in fights and lost

But it's about midnight on a cold sunday. Everything just slowed I thought that this was it. Stabbings and bad beatings were regular events.

later talking about it we all felt the same.

I definitely had a moment in labour with my 3rd child. I didn’t have any pain relief with her so it wasn’t the drugs but I definitely felt like I had some kind of out of body experience - or fully zoned out kind of thing. It was bizarre, didn’t happen with my boys, but I had an epidural with my 1st, then pethidine and G&A but nothing with my DD

Theillustratedmummy · 12/10/2022 21:20

When a doctor told me my dd was going to die within 24 hours. Anything he said after that I couldn't hear. I don't even remember much of what happened after that. Seemed like the world had stood still for ages. I could hear a sort of flooding noise in my ears but nothing else. She was just under 1 year old at the time and is now 9 years old. We must have someone watching over us. I still remember those words like it was yesterday though and often cry about it.

I'm so sorry for your loss 😞

AltheaVestr1t · 12/10/2022 21:23

I had a massive PPH after having DD. I felt myself going cold and drifting off. It was so quiet and peaceful and I felt so calm.

Marcipex · 12/10/2022 21:23

@bloodywhitecat so sorry 💐

Singleandproud · 12/10/2022 21:27

The car infront of us moved across the road straight into the path of an oncoming HG vehicle. Time stood still, it was inevitable that the HGV was going to hit it and the impact happened in slow-mo, I can still see and hear the impact 10 years on.

Turns out the driver had a stroke, he, his wife and adult son died of their injuries. We were first on scene doing CPR for 20 mins before any emergency services got to us.

Sirius3030 · 12/10/2022 21:27

When I saw someone murdered in cold blood.
