When did your world go quiet?

inspired by a tiktok trend recently, just thought it might be an interesting thread. I’m a regular poster not a journalist or anything like that (MNHQ can verify!).

When did your world go quiet? Basically, what was a time you got a fright and time seemed to stop or go quiet?

mine was I was on my horse and he decided to rear up, over concrete ground, and I felt him wobble back. As soon as I felt that first tilt backwards everything sort of went quiet and it was like an out of body experience (not a good one!). I couldn’t hear anyone around. I just remember the last thing I thought was along the lines of this is it im about to die and it was like everything was in slow motion. Luckily it was all ok but that split second was easily the scariest moment of my life and my world completely stopped.

So, when did your world go quiet?

In labour with DS2, epidural and saline drip in place. Saline ran out, massive BP crash and I felt myself fading out. I remember thinking that if this is dying it’s ok.

This. I collapsed due to a cardiac event. That same still feeling, and I felt such profound peace. That if this was how I die then it was ok. I had that real sense of peace for months after

Another one for me was when I thought my own father was going to kill me. He was in the throes of dementia and all his fear and anger was focussed on me. He got me trapped in a tiny bedroom, picked up a heavy office chair and pushed me on the bed and pushed the chair with all his weight down on to me, crushing me. I thought he was going to kill me and time seemed to stop all I could think of was this can't be happening. Luckily at that second the house phone rang and it distracted my Dad enough for me to grab the phone and scream for them to all the police. I had no idea who was on the phone. I managed to stand up but my Dad started throwing punches at me. Luckily the police arrived quickly (they had only just left for a different dementia caused incident) and my Dad went into a care home. The look in his eyes was horrible, I knew he could and wanted to kill me in that moment (I'm not sure he knew I was his daughter then).

My Goodness that sounds absolutely horrific.
I have heard dementia can lead to aggression- especially some forms of it.
A Judge a few tears back was diagnosed with it and committed suicide as it was a type that often leads to aggression.
He didn’t want to do that to his family.
Heard about it on Radio 4 years ago..
Pick’s Dementia.
If I get a Dementia diagnosis ever, I’ll want euthanasia.
Terrifying.

I was walking to a music festival alone, across Bristol Suspension Bridge that was rammed with people.

For some reason, a girl in front of me became seared into my vision, like all my focus was on her, something was profoundly wrong.

She was leaning over the parapet, and crying and talking to herself..

I asked “ You OK?”” And she said “ My Boyfriend .. and pointed down.

To my dismay, her boyfriend was standing - and then walking- along a tiny stone ledge on the bridge, above the gorge.
He was pissed and out of it.
He was picking loose mortar from the bridge and throwing it into the abyss below.

No one else had noticed.

I found a trio of young men, told them, they were disbelieving, but I promised them it was not a wind- up.

Thankfully they believed me and were strong and tall enough to reach for the lad ( Skinny) and they pulled him up by his sweatshirt/hoodie top.

One said “ Don’t be such a wanker, mate”

The Girl and I were very grateful, but the pin sharpness of the incident stayed with me-

I often wonder about the people who hauled him to safety.
They probably remember, too.

I was driving under that bridge when someone jumped. I stopped my car and leapt out as did the builders in the van in front of me. We all were just frozen. Will never forget the image of the figure falling. Me and one of the builders immediately started crying.

@Myrighteyeball I was that child a long time ago in Menorca!
My brother and I were in the water on a windy cloudy day. When we got tired we wanted to swim bak to shore but couldn't, we were caught in a rip tide, crashing on some rocks and back out again. We were calling and waving at our mother, she was waving back at us happily, signalling to come back. I was 7, I managed to half climb on, half grab a rock and was trying keep hold of the rock and grab my brother but every time I got him he was ripped away again. He was 6 and I could tell he was drowning. With every wave my brother seemed to get further from the rock and it was harder to keep hold of that rock but I knew it was our only chance. By then we were exhausted and knew our time was counted. Out of nowhere a lady came crashing through the water a swam towards us, she got hold of us and brought us back to the beach in seconds.
I often think of her. She was British. She simply saved two children from drowning that day. I wish I could thank her.

@roulemapoule I'm glad you were OK in the end. She probably thinks of you all the time, i know I think of those children often. I have taught my children the distress signal when swimming - waving with a closed fist (so it can't be confused with 'happy' waving).

The night my sister died! Paramedics working on her and it was so quiet, also it was outside on a dark winters night, but I remember it being in bright light! Haunted by it!

I was 7 walking home from school and tripped over. Someone had smashed a milk bottle which was stood on its base. I knew I was going to land on it and everything was really slowed down, felt like I was swimming through the air trying to avoid it. Of course I couldn't but the time thing was interesting - looking back.
