Neighbour being ridiculous or AIBU?

Today a neighbour stopped me whilst walking my dog and told me I'd been allowing him to "foul" his property. He then showed me his ring doorbell footage of my dog cocking his leg on a bush right on the boundary of his front garden and the public footpath.

I apologised for any offence but also pointed out that's what dogs do - pointed towards my home and that I see dogs urinating on my bushes daily and it's really not a problem. Obviously there are no health risks or anything like there is for dog waste.

Despite me apologising he carried, and said it was damaging his property and he would report me (to who??), at which point I said he was being silly and this is not a reportable problem.

Honestly he was quite polite but AIBU to think he's being utterly ridiculous to approach someone about this.

He has a point.

If it is a daily occurrence then it might leave a pissy smell.

I wouldn't have made excuses.

Southwig22 · 11/10/2022 21:36

As I've said several times - multiple dogs urinate up the bushes in front of my house every day. It's not a problem, there is 0 harm.

I still appreciate that he may not like it, and don't think he's unreasonable for that (if not a bit weird and needs to find a hobby!).

You think it is not a problem because you are also a dog owner who does this. A bit like when smokers say they don't mind people smoking.

He does not need to find a hobby, that is very judgemental.

Ideaswoman · 11/10/2022 21:49

Sounds like all the YABUs need to move to a part of our planet where dogs don't scent mark. Oh wait, there isn't one and there hasn't been for thousands of year. You think cats, foxes, rodents and the like are not peeing everywhere and anywhere. And I'm sorry I'll repeat that if dog pee smelt so bad, no one would ever leave their house. OP, YANBU.

Well yes but if you read the post I'd quoted I was answering the question as to how I'd like it if dogs were urinating on my plants and now that I've answered and said to me it's not a problem, you're trying to tell me I am wrong.

You couldn't make it up!

Dog urine definitely affects plants.

We replanted the grass in the garden it looked great.

I noticed the urine discolouration patches on it throughout the summer.

tiredofthiisshit21 · 11/10/2022 21:55

Meh. He's being ridiculous. Dog piss doesn't stink.

No one complains about cats shitting everywhere and their owners not having to pick it up.

IamnotSethRogan · 11/10/2022 22:00

I don't let my dog piss on other people's property.

IamnotSethRogan · 11/10/2022 22:00

Literally everyone complains about this. All the time.

I'm not saying you are wrong - I am saying you think one way and other people think another. You now are aware that your actions would upset about half the people in the world if the poll on here is anything to go by.

There are things that do not annoy me that I would not do because I know they annoy other people. Isn't that the very definition of being considerate?

pocketvenuss · 11/10/2022 22:01

OP asks AIBU and argues or insults anyone who says yes, they are. 🙄

AiryFairyLights · 11/10/2022 22:05

I have dogs and wouldn’t let them urinate on my neighbours plants/shrubs/trees in fact I’d apologise profusely if a neighbour approached me like yours has!
I love my dogs and am usually defensive on dog threads but YABU

Yes definitely agree, and I acknowledge this when I say I don't think he is BU for being upset about it.

I can honestly say without him raising it this would never be on my radar of possible issues, it's so much of a non-issue to me!

The AIBU is about telling him it's ridiculous to threaten to report it and continue going on about it once I've apologised and accepted his concern.

And btw dog urine can and does damage plants!

Rayn22 · 11/10/2022 22:07

My dog has killed a few plants too and our grass is patchy. I wouldn't let him piss on neighbours plants though.

Redpriestandmozart · 11/10/2022 22:19

While your dog's pee might be just a tinkle, every single dog will also stop and pee at the same place. This might be what is pushing your neighbour over the edge, the fact that so many dogs are doing it.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 11/10/2022 22:21

Dog owner here - I don’t let my dog take a wee on peoples gardens / plants. It is rude.

Louisa259 · 11/10/2022 22:36

Doesn't sound like you really wanted opinions, you're just answering back to anyone that thinks YABU.
I don't like it when's dogs pee up our fence either.

MightyOaks · 11/10/2022 22:37

Weirdlynormal · 11/10/2022 18:59

He is, but I have to say that dog piss makes me want to gag and streams of it at the front of my house would make me want to say something too

What do you expect a dog owner to do, have a quiet word with the Dog? Good luck trying to stop a dog having wees! They do it when they can smell another dog has weed there. They're marking what they perceive to be 'their' territory which is what dogs do! It's in their genetic make up, you cannot stop it. At all. Short of walking in the middle of the road which as you can imagine, is quite dangerous!

MightyOaks · 11/10/2022 22:39

pocketvenuss · 11/10/2022 19:01

If you know he hates it then just guide your dog elsewhere. You don't have to let him pee on the man's plants. Yes dogs pee but it's weird and entitled to think that should mean he has no right to object to you allowing your dog to pee on his plants. The urine may indeed kill the plant. Our dogs have killed some f our plants by repeated urinating. Can't you just walk your dog past his house?

Good luck stopping any dog from peeing on bushes/fence posts etc which have previously been wee'd on by another dog! Unless you're the type to yank their collar so hard it nearly decapitates them????

MightyOaks · 11/10/2022 22:40

SendHelp999 · 11/10/2022 19:26

I hate dogs. And don't have any pets myself. I don't want animals piss all over the front of my house for people to tread into my home when they enter. Or to kill my plants.

Stop being such an entitled dick and make your dog piss elsewhere

You sound delightful

If a person pissed in your bushes and you asked them not to and they said "ah but multiple people piss in my bushes all the time and I don't mind" would that suddenly make you OK with it?

QuebecBagnet · 11/10/2022 23:09

I gave a dog walker short shift for similar last week, though the dog was 2ft up my drive and weeing not on the pavement.. she still looked at me like I was bonkers for asking her not to let it happen.

i don’t let my dog wee up someone else’s plants even if they are right on the boundary. Like others have said it can kill the plants and the home owners may come along and trim the bushes/plants so it isn’t very nice. And yes I know a fox may wee up it.

QuebecBagnet · 11/10/2022 23:11

MightyOaks · 11/10/2022 22:39

Have you never heard of training your dog by voice commands and positive methods? I’ve never yanked my dog but I’ve also never let her sniff or wee in certain spots. On our usual routes she knows where she can stop and where she can’t.

Giggorata · 11/10/2022 23:13

I've had dogs for many years and decided not to have any more male dogs ten years ago, as I couldn't stand the smell of dog urine in my garden. On my plant pots, which I sometimes wanted to move. Yuck. Or on my vehicle wheels. Or killing my plants.
It wasn't washed away by rain in the slightest and came back after each downpour, intensified by sunshine.
Alternatively, I couldn't stand the smell of the Jeyes fluid that was supposed to be the best thing to eradicate it. It did get rid of the dog pee smell but replaced it with the odour of the boy's lavatories at school.
So, yes, I think you ABU to let your dog cock his leg on your neighbours' properties and should discourage it as much as possible.
