Neighbour being ridiculous or AIBU?

Today a neighbour stopped me whilst walking my dog and told me I'd been allowing him to "foul" his property. He then showed me his ring doorbell footage of my dog cocking his leg on a bush right on the boundary of his front garden and the public footpath.

I apologised for any offence but also pointed out that's what dogs do - pointed towards my home and that I see dogs urinating on my bushes daily and it's really not a problem. Obviously there are no health risks or anything like there is for dog waste.

Despite me apologising he carried, and said it was damaging his property and he would report me (to who??), at which point I said he was being silly and this is not a reportable problem.

Honestly he was quite polite but AIBU to think he's being utterly ridiculous to approach someone about this.

I'm with your neighbour on this. I don't want dogs pissing on my boundary thanks.

Yes just to clarify - of course I will move my dog on in future. I accept I'd be unreasonable if I continued to allow it (although I can't/won't guarantee it'll never happen).

I don't think this is a usual thing to seek out a neighbour you've never spoken to before and castigate them about something so inconsequential though.

It's hardly inconsequential to those of us who care about our plants.

I had neighbours move in next door who just opened their doors multiple times per day and let their dogs out; the dogs invariably came to my front garden and were never picked up after. I went over and asked him to stop that from happening; he went nuclear and neither he nor his family have spoken to me in five years. That's their problem.

Ideaswoman · 11/10/2022 19:37

Despite being someone who doesn't have or want a dog but loves plants, I think YANBU. Even if you stop, others won't. I have literally never smelt dog pee on plants. If dog pee stank up the streets, none of us would be able to leave the house! He needs to be less precious about his plants, plant different ones, or live with it. But sure, prob best to stop your dog peeing there for now. But imo he is BU.

Invernessy · 11/10/2022 19:38

We live on a corner. Sometimes in the morning there is dog piss streaming down our walls and running into pits in the uneven payment making pee puddles. If we are in luck people have left poo outside our house. Totally rank!

Weepingwillows12 · 11/10/2022 19:38

One of the neighbour dogs always pees on a patch of grass at the end of our front garden then dogs around. I hate it because it's where the neighbour kids sit when they are tired from playing. The digging also damages my daffodils in spring. I watch him walk up the road then stop deliberately so his dog can do it. He stands on his phone waiting. It drives me completely mad but I don't say anything because I get it's what dogs do and also because he comes early when I am in the midst of getting ready to take the kids to school.

I think if he's told you then it's a problem so avoid it. If I had a dog I wouldn't let it go on gardens.

LaLoose · 11/10/2022 19:39

I'm afraid I agree. It's not at all OK to allow your dog to cock its leg against plants in someone else's garden. Don't do that.

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 11/10/2022 19:41

I am a massive dog lover and we have a dog ourselves. No way on earth would I allow her to pee on somebody's bushes or garden.

But you said your neighbour was polite and you won't allow your dog to do it again, so as a pp said, non-issue.

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 11/10/2022 19:45

My dog is a terrible widdler. I can't smell it but the in plant pot in my garden he likes to wee on all the flowers quickly died. I keep him to heel passing the fronts of small gardens with low bushes and let him wee on the enormous leylandii hedges of the larger properties. They are very robust (and so high the owners can't see him doing his wee).

UWhatNow · 11/10/2022 19:47

This is the problem with so many dog owners - gormless and oblivious to what is normal, considerate behaviour as long as they and their animal are ok. 🙄

You are allowing the dog to soil his property, or near his property, every single day. Why? It’s not what ‘dogs do’ - it’s you that purposely walks past this man’s house and allows the dog to stop there.

YABVVU

maryberryslayers · 11/10/2022 19:52

Of course YABU to let your dog pee up your neighbours property!! Vile! You should have apologised and just said you'd not do it again.
I caught someone letting their dog pee on our front lawn, I went out and told him off, at least he had the good grace to apologise. I don't even let my own dog pee on my lawn!

shash1982 · 11/10/2022 19:53

Why would you knowingly allow your dog to pee on someone else's property???
I love dogs & get they need to go but why not make sure it goes on the other side of the pavement?
And yes, it could cause a problem for your neighbours plants. My old neighbour had a lovely front garden but owners were forever allowing their dogs to pee in it and eventually it killed the plants and started to stink on warmer days.

Rainbowstripes · 11/10/2022 19:55

Whilst it wouldn't really bother me - I'm always really careful to not let my dog wee in other people's front gardens. It just seems a bit disrespectful especially when there are public areas your dog can use. I completely understand why someone who is not a doggy person wouldn't want a dog weeing in their garden.

browneyes77 · 11/10/2022 20:10

I mean it just boils down to having respect for other people and their property doesn’t it.

I don’t think it was unreasonable of him to approach you at all. I wouldn’t like a dog pissing on my stuff either.

Darbs76 · 11/10/2022 20:13

He might be very garden proud and I’d guess that dog wee doesn’t help. I’d just say I’d try and ensure he didn’t do it anymore and I personally do try and stop my dog weeing on neighbours plants and bushes as some people don’t like it. I personally couldn’t care less but not everyone is the same

VeridicalVagabond · 11/10/2022 20:14

I never let my dogs pee up other people's walls or bushes, it's just rude. The odd lamp post, yeah, but other people's property is just disrespectful. It's not "what dogs do", it's what you allow them to do. It's your responsibility to train your dog.

I don't really see the point in this post though. He asked politely and you agreed to stop so... What exactly is the issue?

Southwig22 · 11/10/2022 20:16

Well this certainly seems a divisive issue - 50/50 so far.

I've had dogs all my life and walk with plenty of people who also have dogs, and it has never been a problem but I do accept he clearly has a specific problem with it. He must be approaching everyone in the neighborhood as he's right next to the green/ park!

I find it a bit odd that those who think I'm BU are massively catrastophising the impact of the leg cocking - there is no smell, it isn't in a place it can physically be walked through, it hasn't and won't kill the plant. If you still think it's unreasonable considering all those facts, fair enough but there's no need to over exaggerate.

To be clear also, although I think it's an odd thing to do to be bothered enough to approach someone about this, what I think is ridiculous is the threats of being 'reported'. That's what I told him was silly.

OP posts:
pompomdaisy · 11/10/2022 20:16

But it's not inconsequential to him. You have a very entitled view.

MinnyMous · 11/10/2022 20:17

I hate it when owners let dogs pee on my hedge. I have to cut it and clear up the cuttings several times a year. It's just gross.

SparklyLeprechaun · 11/10/2022 20:18

I freaking hate the woman who lets her dog wee on my rose bush. Disgusting.

TowerRaven7 · 11/10/2022 20:18

I guess that he didn't accept the apology and continued to go on about it, and also that he threatened to report it... Seems very over the top and like he wanted an argument I suppose

You're the one ignoring the facts for your own agenda, lol.

Urine smells, no matter what species it comes from, especially after it's been sitting there for a while on a warm day.
And yes, it will kill plants. Dog urine is an alkaline and over time, it impacts the soil and can destroy the roots and the plants themselves.

There was a similar thread on here a few months back. You are going to get flamed…..

For what it’s worth, there is absolutely nobody he can report you to for letting your pooch pee on his bush. Loads of dogs probably pee on his bush every day. He’s being ridiculous😬.
