This is going to offend some people, but...

To think that people who have left their country of birth and possibly family behind, to make a better life for themselves in a different place and have made a success of it, deserve a lot of respect ?

I think it takes a lot to make something of yourself elsewhere and can't help but have masses of respect for people who've managed to do that.

Okay.

IdiotSandwich05 · 11/10/2022 08:37

I agree. Anyone who is offended by this is not someone worth knowing.

LadyKenya · 11/10/2022 08:42

Why should anyone find that offensive? It is not an easy thing to do, to leave all that you have known behind. There are many reasons why people do this. I will not sit in judgement of people and their circumstances that I know nothing at all about.

Badgirlriri · 11/10/2022 08:44

Ok

Er who is going to find this offensive?

I mean yes, respect people who are brave enough to try difficult things.
Just to be devil’s advocate, I think the difficulty probably depends to an extent on the countries involved. USA to UK probably easier than Ethiopia to USA.

Dotjones · 11/10/2022 08:50

I don't find it offensive but I think it's wrong. It takes greater courage to remain where you're born and make the place better rather than take the easy option of running away to a better country.

BalmyBalmes · 11/10/2022 08:57

I agree as long as everything they did was legal

LadyKenya · 11/10/2022 08:59

It is easy for people who live in relative comfort to come on here and talk about people staying in their own Countries to make them a better place, blah, blah. People who really have no idea of the conditions some people are living in. People do not risk their lives for the fun of it.

Seriously? That’s one of the most tone-deaf comments I’v ever heard on here, which is saying a lot. How often have you moved country with nothing and started out in a new culture, a new language, to try to make a life from scratch?

Or are you confusing actual migration with one of those Brits Down Under tv shows?

This

girlmom21 · 11/10/2022 09:02

I think it takes a massive amount of courage.
I've met a few people who've left their home countries to come to the UK because it's easier to find work here or because the quality of life is better.

They come and work hard and earn their right to stay and fair bloody play.

If they’ve done it legally then yes, I do respect them. Although not “masses of respect” or “a lot of respect”, just everyday well done respect.

(obviously asylum seekers are legal)

There’s value in both. It’s not either/or.

OP there’s quite literally nothing offensive in what you posted. Why do you think there is? Confused

RandomMusings7 · 11/10/2022 09:06

Sometimes it's simply much easier to make something of yourself abroad. It's not about courage to leave What, it's about an obvious choice for survival. What country you originate from makes all the difference. It's much more nuanced than how you framed it...

I mean it’s all migration innit? Even Brits going to Australia.
The OP didn’t specify refugees only. Literally said “anyone”

Most immigration/emigration you don’t have nothing. It costs a lot to move countries what with visas, moving your furniture & stuff, probably a break in employment, etc.

So I don’t see how the comment was tone deaf unless you’re illogically applying it to refugees…..

  1. Why does anyone have to be courageous? Are you courageous? Are you going anywhere harsh and making a difference? If not then why are you expecting others to? Just because you were lucky enough to be born in what was formerly known as a developed country?
  1. Not everyone comes here to "improve" their lives. People immigrate for all kinds of reasons. I came to the UK from India twenty years ago because I wanted to experience something new. I liked it, got a job, got married and so I stayed. Not because India is a shithole and the UK is paradise. Though we are considering emigrating now because healthcare is so bad in this country and I worry about my family's health needs. You can't get timely treatment neither for love and money and even private care is sub standard. I could of course be courageous and try to improve the system but I don't think I could effect a change big enough to help my family or anyone else.

Ha - you would hate my entire family! We are economic migrants and proud of it. Wherever there are jobs, we are there.

Yeah I didn't actually say the offensive bit. I respect them more in general ! Sorry ! I know..

So much respect for all migrants. Even brits going to Australia. Huge respect. It takes a lot to leave the place you live in, for a potentially better life.

And then get stones thrown at them and their kids with youths yelling "P*is out! P*is out!".

Oh...the joys of moving to a country where the majority look slightly different to you.

Again, not really offensive. It would be offensive to say you don’t respect people who don’t emigrate and make a life in a different country. You’re just stating something you admire.

maddy68 · 11/10/2022 09:18

I moved away from the UK.
I don't think anyone really should have an opinion on my choices or reasons for doing it.

I don't expect praise or vitriol

It's just another life decision I made Along with having children , buying a house, going to uni etc
