To think that people who have left their country of birth and possibly family behind, to make a better life for themselves in a different place and have made a success of it, deserve a lot of respect ?

I think it takes a lot to make something of yourself elsewhere and can't help but have masses of respect for people who've managed to do that.

@VoiceOfCommonSense your username really should be changed to VoiceofRacistBritain or VoiceofNoCompassion.

Let's be clear. You're completely dissing ayslum seekers. People who are feeling from war-torn countries. Not illegal immigrants. (Mind you, I think most on this thread are confusing the two Hmm

Got to love autocorrect. 'Fleeing' not 'feeling'!

Haha, yeah that’s it. Just call everyone racist who doesn’t agree with you.. I have no problem with people seeking asylum. However the majority of these people are just economic migrants. If they are asylum seekers then why wouldn’t they stop in one of the other countries they have to travel through to get to the UK..

Do people still actually believe in and trot out that tired old line? There are a million reasons. Language, family, connections, because the UK has (had?) a reputation for being a good place with regards to human rights and upholding the law.

If they were "economic migrants" it would be a damn site easier to arrive on a plane after applying for a visa than to risk their life on a dinghy across the Channel, or stowed away in a van, or hiding wrapped around the wheels of a plane hoping you don't lose consciousness or get so cold you can no longer hold on.

If anyone is thinking "but why are they always young men on their own", I refer you to the pub analogy further up, and also to spend time thinking properly about it.

Your country is at war, bombs, people being killed, or disappearing in the middle of the night. It is 5000 miles to a safe country, a country that used to own yours, and where you know they don't whisk people away never to be seen again. Maybe somewhere that your old neighbour escaped to and you know he'll help you set up a new life if you can just get there Do you make the journey as a young man, knowing it'll be marginally safer than for your wife/mother/sister who would be in constant danger of sex trafficking and rape, then send for them once you are safe so that they can travel via plane, or pack up your entire family and try to keep everyone together and safe, while dealing with people smugglers, hiding from armies and terrorists, and possibly not being able to run away as quickly as if you were on your own.

Migrants can still be fleeing persecution but just not fit the terms for asylum applications. We also do not have nearly as many refugees arriving in the UK as certain media sources would lead one to believe.

Athenajm80 · 12/10/2022 01:17

FFS, that should so "or do you pack up your entire family" etc

Economic migrants aren't really a thing. Or at least they're not the ones coming over on dinghies. People who are not utterly desperate don't strap themselves to lorries and travel oceans on blow up toys.

We spent centuries colonizing the world, imparting our language, destroying indigenous cultures, leaving behind a disaster of ineffectual leadership and debt. Lots of this is not ancient history. We're just pissed because actions have consequences.

My husband comes from a country with 70% youth unemployment. What exactly do we expect these people to do? It was under British rule within our parents lifetime, we clearly bear some responsibility.

BIWI · 12/10/2022 10:30

the majority of these people are just economic migrants

Can you prove that?

If not, I'll continue to view you as racist.

InCheesusWeTrust · 12/10/2022 12:27

If you want yo lwer immigration just let people read MN before they come
