To park in a parent / child space ?

XPD · 08/10/2022 22:51

I have a blue badge (Multiple Sclerosis). I get that it's on the whole a hidden disability (unless you are in a wheelchair). My (in public) problems currently is numbness from the eyes down plus urgency to use the toilet.

Anyway, pulled into a motorway services today. All the disabled spaces were taken, so I parked in a parent / child space. This is the first time I've ever had to do this - and I was at the point of wetting myself. A lady and her partner started (literally) screaming at me for not having a child with me. I have huge problems with my bladder, I'm not sure if I was in the wrong?

What do you think ? Was I in the wrong ?

You're wrong.

TheFairyCaravan · 08/10/2022 23:18

"Well you clearly felt entitled to use a parent and child space. Do you genuinely have a disability that means that your need to use the toilet comes on fast and unexpectedly, or did you just wait until you really needed to go then decide that any parent struggling with a baby could just get stuffed?

Your blue badge is not a licence to act like you did, but as you seem to think it is a free pass to act like you did I’ll leave you to it."

You are absolutely disgusting @PrincessButtercupToo

The OP has already said her disability causes urgency.. Being disabled is really hard, much harder than being the mother of a toddler or even two toddlers and do you know how I know that? Because I've been there, and I'm still there. so maybe wind your neck in a bit and have a bit more compassion.

Do you understand what a choice is?

You chose to have children. OP did not choose to be disabled.

🙄 well this is a bollocks post if I ever read one

MarshaMelrose · 08/10/2022 23:19

There are signs up in supermarket car parks clearly saying that people parking incorrectly in parent and child spaces will be fined. So not a courtesy.

Seriously?

I’m disabled but not to the extent of needing a blue badge yet.

but this is bollocks. You have no clue about living a life that is constantly limited by something out of your control. This is one of the most awful statements I have ever seen on this website

Of course they have less right because it's illegal to park in disabled spaces without a badge but not illegal to park in P&C spaces without a child. Are you blind?

I have no idea when I need to use the toilet. I'm numb below the eyes.

No, it’s not illegal, but as with others, you probably have a really good reason why you won’t now quote the legislation that you’ve just invented.

FlipFlopBattle · 08/10/2022 23:21

I often wondered what the t*s who merrily park in disabled spaces when it suits them actually use as their self-justification.

I assumed it would be because there are still plenty of other disabled places free, they'll only be 5 minutes, or some other way of rationalising that they're not affecting anyone. But to hear that someone's only thought process is that it's fine to park there because it's not legally enforceable... Wow

Parent /child spaces drive me mad. They're always the closest to the doors and they should be the furthest away to tire the little darlings out. And I've seen loads of people use them for like 9 and 10yos who are quite capable of using car doors. And if you go late shopping, they're all empty but you have to park a distance away.
So I say, you park in them if you want. Your need is far greater than theirs.

I agree. What I want from a parent & child space is for it to be wider than usual so I can fully open the doors on both sides to get a child in and out of a car seat rather than having to shuffle in sideways in a normal space. There is absolutely no need for it to be any closer to the shop than a normal space, save those for disabled spaces.

ilovesooty · 08/10/2022 23:24

@PrincessButtercupToo the ableism you've demonstrated on this thread is utterly reprehensible.

P&C spaces are a courtesy because when building a car park you do not need to include them.

However, when building a car park, you legally have to have disabled spaces.

Confuzzlediddled · 08/10/2022 23:26

What @PrincessButtercupToo hasn't realised is that anyone can be one accident or illness away from being disabled, you never know what the future may hold.

CandyLeBonBon · 08/10/2022 23:26

"I'm numb from the eyes down. I've got no idea when I need to wee or poo unless it happens."

That's surely quite problematic when you're driving?

TheFairyCaravan · 08/10/2022 23:27

"You really seem to have misunderstood what “AIBU” is for. If the OP wanted people to fawn over her bravery there are other forums "

I know exactly what AIBU is all about. It's not about being ableist. It's not about telling someone, whose disability affects their bladder that they shouldn't leave going to the toilet until the last minute. It's not about spouting complete and utter bull shit to fit your own agenda, while trying to make the op look bad.

Disabled people with a BB can park in a P&C space. Get over it.

Why don't you do us all a favour @PrincessButtercupToo and fuck off to bed .....MN is full of attention seekers tonight 🙄

I cant drive because multiple Sclerosis caused epilepsy because of a placement of a brain lesion. I am/ was in my mobility car that my partner was driving.

A blue badge means the OP is legally entitled to park in a P&C space. Your comment just makes you look like a dick.

yellowtwo · 08/10/2022 23:38

PrincessButtercupToo, op said she has MS, so yes the need to go to the toilet can happen in an instant, why did you not bother to read her posts?

PonyPatter44 · 08/10/2022 23:39

Oh for gods, sake, of course you weren't wrong. The screaming woman.was MENTAL. Don't give it another thought.
