The stupid 'sultry' porno face. Why do they do it?

OP posts:

Interested to see what the people who are pearl clutching think of Kings like Landon Cider?

KimberleyClark · 07/10/2022 16:26

If you watch some Stanley Baxter or Dick Emery sketches from the 70s there is nothing remotely porny about them. It’s just acting and characterisation.

Draughtycatflapreturns · 07/10/2022 16:27

I thought this thread was about Liz Truss’s stupid gurning and shite impression of Margaret Thatcher.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 07/10/2022 16:29

Yay, another drag queen thread. It's been what, a week or so since the last one?
🙄

foxlover47 · 07/10/2022 16:32

See I don't feel offended by drag. when I look at Bimini Bon boulash for example walking the runway at fashion week in Paris I don't see her in anyway doing anything wrong to women
But I enjoy RPDR so I'm possibly not the one to comment

Ah, dismissing women who are discussing misogyny as 'pearl clutchers'. How novel.

As a PP said, one (or even a handful) of male impersonators doesn't negate all the harmful parodies of womanhood drag queens portray. And it's not the same thing - DQs are punching down and ridiculing the oppressed group. DKs are not.

Well, that's a matter of opinion, not fact.
Mine is that they are just expressing themselves, if that means dressing up in high heels, lots of make up, short sparkly dresses etc, so what?
Doesn't threaten me in any way, each to their own.
I like watching Drag Race, listening to some of their stories as they're in the Werk Room explains more, and can make you get an insight into their lives

I have no idea why the mainstream have embraced drag.

I can hazard a guess, albeit it makes no sense to me, and, ok, sorry in advance for bringing the trans thing onto AIBU and not keeping it in the naughty corner. My guess is because people / the BBC / the mainstream whatever think that embracing drag shows how inclusive they are and what an ally to the LGBTQIA++++ queer community they are. And to criticise this on the grounds that it's misogynistic would probably get you tarred with the homophobic/transphobic brush, even though that's not even remotely the same thing.

Exactly.

Drag queens are escaped pantomime dames in my opinion and that is one genre of entertainment that I'd love to see the back of.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 07/10/2022 16:52

I love pantomime and panto dames, have been going since I was a kid and it's still family tradition for us to go yearly now!
Just because you don't like it, why would you like to "see the back of it?"
Just don't go to pantomimes instead of wanting to take it away from others because you don't like it.

Oh NO you DON'T ! 😁

CatsandFish · 07/10/2022 16:03

@VillanellesCoat Perhaps because you're too "lazy" yourself to understand others' points of view, and just expect everyone to agree with you?

🤣 If you say so

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 07/10/2022 17:04

@Ladybrrrd

Comparing it to blackface is just disgusting. It is a marginalized group expressing themselves. A middle finger from an oppressed class to society.

This, well said

Laiste · 07/10/2022 17:09

If you take the posts in support of drag you see an awkward similarity with what black face supporters were saying back in the 70s.

If you don't like it don't look.
I find it funny so you have no right to be offended.
It's just for laughs stop being hysterical.
It's inviting black people to laugh at the white man.
They are just expressing themselves.
They aren't doing anything wrong to black people.
It's origins are rooted in history so .... that makes it ok apparently.

Dressing up in high heels etc - great, crack on. Why pretend to be a woman while doing it though?

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/10/2022 17:40

I agree.

A lot of people criticise drag because they just don't get it. Maybe they're scared of clowns at the circus too and never got over that childhood fear.

I fully support the march of horses who will be protesting outside theatres with signs and banners in the uk protesting about how offensive it is to have pantomime horses on stage. It's an offence to the equine community. Horse Face, that's what it is.

I've heard that cows will leave their fields and show their solidarity against pantomime cows too. It's an offence against the bovine community. Cow Face, that's what it is.

sagalooshoe · 07/10/2022 17:55

I'm quite glad though that no matter how much makeup they slap on, how bitchy they attempt to be, how sluttily or glamorously they attempt to dress , a man will never, never, never succeed in becoming an actual woman. It's not possible and it never will be.

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 07/10/2022 17:59

@sagalooshoe what's that got to do with drag?
Or did you just want the change to say how you feel about trans people with all your chest?

ToGanymedeAndTitan · 07/10/2022 18:04

chance

nokitchen · 07/10/2022 18:10

I'm not bothered by drag queens in the main. I don't find them funny, but don't tend to find very much funny to be honest. I did wonder what Cheryl Cole thought of ,'Cheryl Hole' though.

She was a guest judge if I remember correctly on Drag Race UK so they met and she said that she loved that she inspired her name.
