@VillanellesCoat educate me then.

Do you want to start with vaudeville or Marsha P Johnson and the Stonewall riots?

deadloud · 07/10/2022 13:58

Vaudeville

cocoamad · 07/10/2022 13:58

When I looked into the history of drag once it appeared to also have very racist origins.

That’s lazy. I could if I thought it would be an open debate, but these threads are very predictable for the responses. And to be honest I’m exhausted trying to open up debates with people who aren’t remotely interested. I’m not necessarily referring to you directly - I don’t know you - but the tone of these threads is tiring.

As well as misogynistic that is

VillanellesCoat · 07/10/2022 14:00

@VillanellesCoat aren't we all allowed to express our opinions? And if it's in public, aren't people allowed to disagree?

Of course you are. But these things never end well 😆

3peassuit · 07/10/2022 14:00

Offensive depictions of womanhood. I find it grim and well deserving of a place in the dustbin of entertainment history.

No real woman I have ever met bears any resemblance to the atrocity of drag, thank god.

ReturnOfTheMacdonalds · 07/10/2022 14:03

I agree that it is offensive and misogynistic. In my opinion drag queens are wannabe comedians or singers who aren’t talented enough to make it in those industries and seek attention by dressing up as woman-clown hybrids.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/10/2022 14:03

It's for entertainment.

C'mon gimme a proper flaming....

In all honesty just wtaf is womanface ?

I realise counterpoint arguments are not welcome, but, what if it was just for entertainment and nothing else ?

Danny La Rue
Hinge and Bracket
Cissy and Ada
Dick Emery
The bloke that inspired Les Dawson to create Cissy and Ada
Mrs Agnes Brown

Why is there all this hate for drag queens ? I guess I'm just not right on enough.

BTW, have any of the haterz watched RuPaul's drag race or read any of Paul O'Grady's biographies ?

Do those same haterz have a problem with female drag artists ? Yes they do exist.

Vaudeville

Eltinge, once the highest paid actor in the world was a famous vaudevillian and drag queen. He was paid more than Charlie Chaplin is his day. Then of course in the 1930s drag became a way for lgbt men to express themselves, which led to raids on gay establishments. Which then led to the Stonewall riots when a queen was the first to defend herself.

It's of course not this simple but I'm sure if you do a little research yourself and all that.

Drag is not just what you see on bbc3.

Elderemo · 07/10/2022 14:05

Oh and as Toffee has just pointed out there are female drag artists too! It's almost like the world is becoming more accepting. Well, some of us.

PinkyU · 07/10/2022 14:05

Because they’re entertainers and some people find it entertaining.

It’s an industry so they’ll do what’s popular and makes money, similar to David Walliams&Matt Lucas, Sacha Baron-Cohen, Caroline Ahern, Catherine Tate, Harry Enfield&Paul Whitehouse, etc. Do you also hate these actors?

You know, entertainers being paid to adopt troped characters for entertainment because a good number of the general public like it.

So basically you’re not able to justify or even clearly state your arguments. How is drag a positive thing? Is it that males have historically found freedom/escapism in drag as it allows them to challenge the restrictive chains of masculinity by…… ridiculing women?

Totally justified then.

Erm, they very much are not. Any failed actor who thinks drag is easy gets short shrift from RuPaul.

All you've mentioned here is men, men, men. Why should women care that it was a way for lgbt men to express themselves, at the expense of women? Confused

None of this excuses the inherent misogyny of drag.

Saying drag was a way 'for LGBT men to express themselves' (not sure how a man can be L, either) doesn't mean drag isn't misogynistic.

A drag queen being paid more than Charlie Chaplin doesn't excuse the vile portrayals of women.

Good for them. True equality is surely when even marginalized men can exploit women to their own gains. Always here to help.

Oh I'm sorry.

Laurie Bushman was a female drag artist who paved the way for a New York "club kid" collective and formed a place for those seen as outsiders in their time.

Better? Not just men, men, men.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 07/10/2022 14:11

Erm, that's because they're a drag artist.

It's ironic that a male drag artist has no intention of becoming transgender. To them, it's a living not a lifestyle.

Not sure this is something to be proud of. You know that whole scene was fucked, and ended very very badly
