AIBU?

to think my neighbour has no right to complain about this?

I live on a street where parking for visitors is a nightmare due to the fact that nearly everyone has a driveway (including us). Therefore when we have visitors we always let them park across our driveway. To be clear, them doing this does not affect the neighbours on either side getting in or out of their own driveways - there is no overhang whatsoever and plenty of space. One of my neighbours has asked me not to let visitors park across my driveway as (his words) it sets a bad example and makes other people think they can park across driveways (I've never seen this happen once).

AIBU to think I should be able to let visitors block my own driveway?!?!

Am I being unreasonable?

Your drive. Your guests. No one else's business

VainAbigail · 06/10/2022 09:52

No but you can be fined for parking across even your own drop kerb (likelihood?) and they’re not just there for access to your driveway (wheelchairs to cross etc) so YANBU but a tiny bit U too!

SleeplessInEngland · 06/10/2022 09:53

Fucking ridiculous. Politely tell him you'll use your own driveway as you see fit.

RB68 · 06/10/2022 09:57

Doesn't matter if they are your visitor or not if they are parking across a dropped curb then they are in the wrong. I think if its a quick drop and run fine but anything more than a couple of minutes then you need to sort something else out

GreyBlossom · 06/10/2022 09:57

Technically it is illegal and they can be fined, as PP says. Obviously it doesn't usually happen because it relies on someone complaining and you're not likely to, but if she does....

She has the "right" to say/complain about what she wants. You get to choose what you do with that.

Zingy123 · 06/10/2022 09:57

It's illegal so YABU.

Cliveandclyde · 06/10/2022 09:58

wheelchairs to cross etc) so YANBU but a tiny bit U too!

The whole street is dropped kerbs, I don't see how that is blocking wheelchair access at all? It is not blocking the path. Genuine question.

As long as it’s not an obstruction to your neighbours (I’m thinking particularly anyone opposite your property, my opposite neighbour likes to have three cars parked directly infront of their drive and they fail to understand that the dropped kerb outside their house is an access for our dropped kerb parallel to it.)

Cliveandclyde · 06/10/2022 10:00

They park ON my driveway. They don't park on the street.

Do you have any pavement infront of your property? Or straight from driveway to road?

Zingy123 · 06/10/2022 10:01

You said they park across your driveway. Now you are saying on your driveway. Which is it?

Seeline · 06/10/2022 10:01

I think I need a diagram!

How can they park across your drive, but on your drive?

Cliveandclyde · 06/10/2022 10:02

It's driveway to road.

I do think it's pretty unlikely that you'd be fined, although it is possible. The borough I live in states that they will issue fines for all contraventions, whereas the neighbouring borough says they only fine for 'unfriendly' parking (their wording), which I assume means if you don't have permission to block someone in.

It's obviously important that everyone has access to cross the road but given what OP has said about everyone having driveways I assume there are enough kerbs to allow everyone to cross regardless of OP's visitors.

OP you should just ignore neighbour.

Cliveandclyde · 06/10/2022 10:03

They park across our driveway but they're on the driveway itself, I don't know how else to explain it really. The driveways are really only designed for one car but our car is tiny so guests can use it too if they park sideways.

I think I can imagine you live in a new build estate, which are typically terribly designed for parking. They seem to like to build with large curves and multiple dropped kerbs, so there really is no on street parking, it’s a complete nightmare so I understand your frustration if that’s the case.

Im not sure what to advise though.

girlmom21 · 06/10/2022 10:05

As in you've got a car facing the house then they park perpendicular so behind your car and their passenger side is by your boot?

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 06/10/2022 10:07

A photo of your road/driveway would help!

Ladyofthelake53 · 06/10/2022 10:07

I park across my own drive all the time I'm so sick of others blocking ut so now I park there. Not on the pavement so not obstructing it for pedestrians etc. Tell them to mind their own business it doesn't affect them

Cliveandclyde · 06/10/2022 10:07

Correct.

It's not a new build estate, it's thirties housing. People have just put in driveways over the years.

Essentially my neighbour is basically complaining about 2 cars being parked on our driveway which don't obstruct any other cars.

EmmaH2022 · 06/10/2022 10:09

Your neighbour is crazy. Ignore. Of course you can park how you like on your own drive.

girlmom21 · 06/10/2022 10:09

Your neighbour is complaining you're using your driveway for its intended purpose. Tell him to grow up.

Zingy123 · 06/10/2022 10:09

In that case it's none of the neighbours business.

Of course a wheelchair could use any space to cross, that’s a given. I’m just thinking outside the box!

As I say, YANBU to let them park there if you so wish!
