To flush slugs

Inspired by the spider in the bin thread. Conscience pricking me a bit.

I have (had) a problem with slugs in the kitchen at night. They get in somewhere behind the fitted units but I’m not sure exactly where / how.
I dropped them outside for a while but they eventually came back.

So I started to flush any I found down the toilet. The slug problem is now very much reduced. I know that to flush the slugs was not kind. But was I unreasonable?

YWVVU. I'm no fan of slugs but just put them outside on the neighbours flowerbeds.

Norma27 · 05/10/2022 20:53

I do the same. They are vile things. We don’t get many now though.
When I was very young I was much crueller. I used to find them in the garden and cut them in half.
I have been veggie since about 4 yrs old too,

notdaddycool · 05/10/2022 20:54

Don’t blame you at all. I think salt hills them quickly too.

Romeoalpha · 05/10/2022 20:58

Thing is - nature is cruel is it not?
I don’t suppose many slugs die peacefully of old age.

Getting flushed can’t be worse than being mashed up in the beak of a blackbird?

Well no it probably isn’t very pleasant to be mushed up by a blackbird, but at least that ‘cruelty’ has a functional purpose - the blackbird gets a (presumably!) tasty meal? Just flushing them down the loo doesn’t really result in any benefit to nature.

properdoughnut · 05/10/2022 21:01

Wtf

MakkaPakkas · 05/10/2022 21:01

My only reservation would be that they might climb back out of the toilet in the night and try to get me.

InsertPunHere · 05/10/2022 21:04

I squish the bastards. Hate 'em worse than rats. Die die die DIE.

(I actually really love rats, DS has had them for years and they're lovely)

Oysterbabe · 05/10/2022 21:06

I can't bring myself to care about the fate of a slug, the vegetable eating cunts.

BlackCatTabbyCat · 05/10/2022 21:08

I have a massive fear of slugs 🤢 absolutely vile creatures I couldn't go near one to pick it up but I definitely wouldn't put it down the toilet only because I'd be constantly worrying it would slither its way back up and into my bum.

😂😂😂
But what about a giant squid or sea monster? Would you flush that?!

FlissyPaps · 05/10/2022 21:10

You might have a damp problem OP. Can you get some dehumidifiers?

Not sure what flushing the slugs would do, you may need to ask a plumber 😂

justloveandlightx · 05/10/2022 21:10

Yes, very unreasonable. Just put them outside, get your units sorted and stop them coming in or it'll just keep happening, surely?
I don't agree with ending the life of any living creature, big or small, slimey or not. They're not yours to kill.

Arnaquer · 05/10/2022 21:13

If you can pick them up and lush them away, open the door and put them outside. I'm not a fan of slugs but don't go out of my way to kill them or any other living things either. How cruel.

silverclock222 · 05/10/2022 21:14

I do wonder at people who feel the need to be kill any animal except as a food source. As a pp said, not yours to kill.

I'd happily face a giant squid and a sea monster than a single slug Grin

Not sure why anyone that eats animals would suddenly get some morals and worry about killing a slug. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Cognitive dissonance.

Romeoalpha · 05/10/2022 21:24

Some of you haven’t read my OP: I DID open the door and put them outside to start with, but they (or their offspring) kept coming back in.

I admit I do not want to tear out my kitchen units to save the life of a few slugs.

They definitely will.

They are probably organising their attack now OP.

AlternativelyWired · 05/10/2022 21:25

So you are the inspiration behind the film Flushed Away and why slugs are partying in the sewers Grin

Romeoalpha · 05/10/2022 21:25

I think the slug population of my garden is now more under control.

Another one here with a big phobia of slugs. Had them in an old house, flicked the kitchen light on in the middle of the night and they'd be all over the kitchen floor.

If you're wondering how they get in - I stood and watched them one night squidge themselves down to the thinness of a piece of paper and slide back under the kitchen units 🤢
