2020: low-paid essential workers are the best thing ever 👏👏

2022: low-paid lazy scumbags - get a better job, we’re not subbing you anymore

🤬

Walkacrossthesand · 05/10/2022 08:42

@Discovereads** , exactly - as Tiny Wedgwood Benn sardonically observed 50 years ago, 'if [tories] want the rich to work harder, they pay them more; to make the poor work harder, they pay them less.' Sadly, nothing has changed.

Walkacrossthesand · 05/10/2022 08:42

Tony! 🙄

Meklk · 05/10/2022 08:43

How many hours we should work then? 100/week?
Lots of our friends doing 12hrs shifts/5days a week + extra jobs on days off. THEY ARE STILL STRUGGLING TO PAY THEIR BILLS AND NO ONE HAVE MORE THAN 2 KIDS. What they want us to do? Work 16hrs/day, 7days/week?

UnderCoverFieldAgent · 05/10/2022 08:57

What’s so ridiculous about that? Some people are on minimum wage jobs and there may be an opportunity for them to get better paid jobs. Some people may be working part time when there is an opportunity for them to work full time. Just because you’re offended doesn’t mean you’re right.

BigFatLiar · 05/10/2022 08:59

He's probably speaking from experience as he seems to get £3500 a month for 15-20 hours work outside parliament (according to the Register of Interest) so obviously these well paid part time jobs are out there (probably helps to be an MP though)

MrsDoyle351 · 05/10/2022 09:12

@UnderCoverFieldAgent oh gosh - of course.

No one had ever thought of those things before. So kind of you to explain that to us simpletons/plebs.

I knew I remembered that from somewhere. Half a century and still 100% true.

Turtle93 · 04/10/2022 22:31

So we all get new jobs that pay more, then what happens? Who does all these jobs that don't pay as well?

This ! Honestly , there are few things that people come out with that make me want to tear my hair out but this is one of them

the old poor paying job will still be there for someone else to fill and be poorly paid

That’s assuming there is even a higher paying job to go to

it literally makes zero sense and the people that say it shouldn’t be in a position of power if they are that stupid the don’t grasp this concept

TicTac80 · 05/10/2022 09:39

What an unfeeling, out of touch, idiot!! As an NHS nurse, I work FT (more than that), and I can't work more hours/earn more as I'm also a single parent of two kids (one is primary school age, and I am lucky enough to have negotiated FT hours around wraparound care - this is bloody rare in my line of work!). I'm lucky as I'm a Band 6, but I have to watch the pennies (XH doesn't pay a penny, and doesn't help).

What about all the workers on a lower wage than me? How do they expect them to take time out of work to retrain and find "better paying jobs"? I was lucky to have the chance to get a good education and qualifications behind me, many don't have that privilege (or ability, or their health/life circs don't allow it). None of them are looking for handouts, they simply need a decent living wage, in line with inflation, that would enable them to be able to afford the basics!! It doesn't matter what job they do, we should be thankful that there are people doing these jobs, and earning an honest wage.

This idiot is talking about people whose jobs are ones that EVERYONE relies on (even him). If they all suddenly buggered off and got these magic, higher paying jobs (btw, where are these jobs? As if it was that easy to just get a better paying job), then the country would be on its knees.

AuntSalli · 05/10/2022 09:42

I hate to say I told you so but I did tell them so back in 2020 they should’ve all gone on strike then.

Crikeyalmighty · 05/10/2022 09:42

A middling level recruitment consultant will earn more than a nurse. I would rather the nurse stayed in her job thanks (and I've done both in the past) - what a very stupid and ignorant man

But that would involve the government raising public sector wages in line with inflation of the past decade. The most valuable jobs in society are largely fairly lowly paid (I know people will say I can only dream of earning x, y or z but they are ridiculously low for the level of education, responsibility and the actual work itself). It's sad.

It’s more is assumption that 1) these opportunities exist for everyone and 2) that refusing said opportunities for no reason is why people are struggling to make ends meet. When logically, if these opportunities existed and people had no reason not to take advantage of them, then they wouldn’t be struggling would they? He’s assuming everyone struggling is struggling by choice.

So what is your solution?

If you are struggling with bills, it seems there is only two options - increase your income (new job), or reduce your outgoings.

I don't pretend either is necessarily easy, but I don't see how it makes someone "nasty" to point out the options.

plominoagain · 05/10/2022 09:52

This is the whole problem with these dickheads . They are so obsessed with looking after number one , that they have no idea how an entire society works , and how it needs people doing jobs of every level at a decent wage , to be properly functional.

So we all get better jobs . Well done us . Let's all become surgeons , for example .

None of us able to function because no one's cleaning the operating theatre. Bugger.

midgetastic · 05/10/2022 09:54

They see that you chose a lower paid job you chose to have children so it's all your free choices so why are you complaining ?

Quote from Margaret thatcher there’s no such thing as a society. They don’t believe in it.

obviously if their house burns down or if they mugged at that point they believe in society because they like the assistance of somebody bigger and stronger than them to help, but other than that

KimberleyClark · 05/10/2022 10:01

Didn’t Norman Tebbit tell the conference that his father if he was out of work would “just get on his bike and look for it”. Tories never change.

Why not? If you can't afford to live the lifestyle you want then you need to increase your earnings. It's basic common sense about having personal responsibility and not expecting the government to hand everything to you on the plate.

That's just not going to be possible for many people, but let's even suppose it is: when everyone has moved to better paying jobs, who is going to do the less well paid, but essential, jobs? Who is going to care for elderly, sick and disabled people (and there will be even more people in need of paid care, when family carers have all moved on to well-paid full-time jobs that don't permit time to care for relatives)? Who will clean the hospitals? Who will collect the rubbish? Etc. etc. Of course, one could pay such people more- but I somehow don't think that's what Jake Berry is thinking of!

A need for food and heat is not a 'lifestyle'.

These are basic needs. 12 years of this government has come to this.

Food banks
Heat banks.
I think your comment is tone deaf.

Have you not read what people have posted?

What struggles they are going through??

Nasty little tory git!
He would be sorry when he got old or became ill and there was nobody to look after him or indeed there was nobody to serve him his subsidised meals in the house of commons or clean his nasty tory toilet 😆 in his paid for second home!

Mentalpiece · 05/10/2022 10:40

Great, I'll do his job then being as it's much better paid than mine shall I.
It's the same as telling people to get a second job. Well it would certainly help your bills because you'd never be at home to use any bloody energy!!
Just what is it with these people? Have they got heads stuffed with fresh air? Because the space between their ears seem to be lacking brains.

Do you think people on the minimum wage have not considered looking at all options to improve their lifestyle?

You don't need to a wealthy tory to tell you.

Just because you are poor does not mean you are Stupid.

Just because you are privileged does not mean you are intelligent or have empathy.

It’s the reduce the outgoings that gets me- do you not know some people have less than £20 to feed their family for a week. How do you suppose they reduce their outgoings?
people aren’t struggling because they are spending their money on holidays, they are struggling to stay alive. Why can Tory’s not see this at all?
