According to Jake Berry the Conservative Party Chairman.

Nasty git
GET THEM OUT!

Why not? If you can't afford to live the lifestyle you want then you need to increase your earnings. It's basic common sense about having personal responsibility and not expecting the government to hand everything to you on the plate.

Rabbitbabbit · 05/10/2022 07:25

This is exactly who and what the Tories are though, they have never hidden it which is why its so baffling people keep voting for them. This isn't new or shocking information, this is who they have always been proud and open about being.

And what does a 60 year old female do? Once upon a time she could retire, now it's an extra six years. Will anyone employ her?

Exactly the same as a man. They need to stop complaining and get a job. It should be part of their career planning to ensure they are trained and able to do different jobs consummate with their physical and mental abilities.

I think he must be a closet MNer because I see that advice on here all the time that wives should tell their husbands to get a better paying job. I think it's crap and stupid advice here and it's crap and stupid advice from him. Unless it's to get his better paying job at the next election.

I've seen it on a few threads too (to posters or their spouses)

malificent7 · 05/10/2022 07:29

Well perhaps the tories should listen to strikers and create conditions where jobs are better paid!

But we're not talking about lifestyle choices, we're talking about basic living expenses

Forfrigz · 05/10/2022 07:31

It's a great idea, then when their old job is filled we can say the same to the new employee who is unable to make ends meet :) what a fantastic country we live in

Numbat2022 · 05/10/2022 07:35

This is what the Tories have always thought, privately. It's your fault if you're poor.

Johnson has given them the confidence to say in public what was previously said behind closed doors.

User98866 · 05/10/2022 07:35

The 55-year-old told the party conference in Birmingham: ""Go in any Wetherspoons, that's the barometer of how this country is doing, when Wetherspoons is empty we've got a big problem."

Well if this is the Tory party’s measure of how the country is doing we should all be quite worried. They are closing 32 branches! Liz the disruptor better have some more great ideas up her sleeve.

Problem is it’s not about affording a lifestyle, it’s not being able to afford food

ChakaKhanfan · 05/10/2022 07:44

Those who are struggling aren’t being lazy or greedy. That mentality is toxic and incorrect. The only greedy people I see are the Tory MPs and their fat cat friends benefitting from the tax cuts.

Lunabun · 05/10/2022 07:47

"We believe that hard work should pay off... u less you're poor. Then no."

Sunnyqueen · 05/10/2022 07:47

God they've got a short memory. All those essential workers during the pandemic - nurses, carers, supermarket staff etc. Were the heroes who kept the country running at their own risk. Now they are morons who are only poor because they lack ambition.
When is the public going to wake up to this shit??

Mamansparkles · 05/10/2022 07:52

I'm a teacher. I have friends who are nurses. Husbands in similar paying roles. We are all struggling with cost of living whilst we have to pay for childcare for toddlers, our salaries just don't cover it. In some parts of the country we wouldnt earn enough even without the childcare costs.
I guess he just wants us all to leave these professions.

TigerRag · 05/10/2022 07:55

Does that include the MPs that claim for everything on expenses?

Sunnyqueen · 05/10/2022 07:56

So who does the low paid jobs then? If miraculously millions of high paid jobs become available for everyone in low paid jobs 'to better themselves' and move on to who is going to run the supermarkets? Pour your drinks in the bar? Wipe your arse for you when your old?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 05/10/2022 07:59

I'm a nurse so the Government pay my wages.

The fact that they can say with a straight face that my wages - that they pay- are so low that what I should do is get another job is both hilarious and horrific.

happyinherts · 05/10/2022 07:59

Crap like what @Untitledsquatboulder ? All my over 60 year old friends work. They have to. Some still have mortgages, but with inflation and such like, some will have to take on more. My question was - who is going to employ a 60+ year old woman? Threads have suggested men over 50 have difficulties finding employment.

midgetastic · 05/10/2022 08:02

They want you working 2 full time jobs it's seems -

it would help solve the labour crisis

although not many employers are happy for their staff to have a second job because as human beings we suffer productivity losses when we work too long

That's not the country I want to be part of but due to accident of birth I don't have many options

Forfrigz · 05/10/2022 08:09

This is why they won't commit to raising benefits with inflation, because they know it will become safer to be on benefits and be able to very minimally scrape by than to be working for poverty wages. I say this as someone who's never been entitled to benefits but works for a very low salary.

Thebestwaytoscareatory · 05/10/2022 08:14

YANBU but, according to most Tory sympathizers on here everyone and anyone can just “work harder to make something of themselves”, so there shouldn’t be an issue in doing this.

In fact l, according to them it’s so easy you have to wonder why they haven’t led by example and all become multimillionaires already. Come on Tories, stop being lazy, irresponsible spongers and show the rest of us feckless idiots how easy it is to become super rich!

LakieLady · 05/10/2022 08:21

Another epic piece of idiocy from the Tories.

They have no idea of the obstacles facing people trying to find better paid work: lack of childcare, caring responsibilities, accessibility of well-paid work due to lack of public transport, commuting costs, lack of relevant skills etc.

And even getting better paid work isn't a huge help when you're on UC. Once you're above the threshold for tax/NI you only end up about £3.25 or something better off out of every £10 you earn, so the difference is pretty marginal for many.

And if all the low-paid TAs, carers, retail workers etc got better paid jobs, the consequences would be significant. Lack of carers is already adding to hospital waiting lists because of bed blocking, how much worse do they want it to get?

MrsDoyle351 · 05/10/2022 08:26

"I think every household understands that actually the reason this government is going for growth is because when you are struggling with your household budget, as many households are, you need to grow your personal household budget.'

Direct quote from Jake Berry.

Yeah right love - I'll just grow my personal household budget whilst I'm 58 and my earnings have been cut again via no payrise to match inflation.

I'll change career direction and become an investment banker and gain with the value of the pound tanking....like Kwasi and his champagne quaffing friends.

TBH they all make me throroughly sick. It's one rule for the rich, and screw everyone else. Selfish bastards.

MissBattleaxe · 05/10/2022 08:35

I don't know. Tut. Tut. These pesky poor people deciding not to be born into rich families. It's their own fault.

Lalliella · 05/10/2022 08:40

2020: low-paid essential workers are the best thing ever 👏👏

2022: low-paid lazy scumbags - get a better job, we’re not subbing you anymore
