According to Jake Berry the Conservative Party Chairman.

Nasty git
GET THEM OUT!

OP posts:
Notlosinganyweight · 04/10/2022 22:46

I think they are just trying to rile people up on purpose to justify their shitty actions. Trying to create division and class wars.

Bit thick though aren't they? We can see through it.

WhiteFire · 04/10/2022 22:46

According to a large number of MN posters those in low(er) paid jobs should get a second job, regardless of how many hours/days you already work.

Discovereads · 04/10/2022 22:51

I’m disabled and there’s only one rate of pay for us. I suppose I could clone myself to double my salary? They won’t even commit to raising disability benefits in line with inflation….

I could try selling an organ or two on the black market.

So we all get new jobs that pay more, then what happens? Who does all these jobs that don't pay as well?

Presumably care home residents get trained up to cover shifts themselves?

This government is a sick joke.

This sort of shift never fails to amaze me! Does he honestly think that cleaners ,shop workers and so on would continue on nmw if there was an alternative? Reminds me of Norman tebbitt telling everyone to get on their bike!

There is always a choice. To retrain, do extra qualifications etc. For an individual. The point is that this leaves the job they were doing previously vacant, and presumably that job is necessary or nobody would be paying them for it to start with, so somebody else will then fill it and the problem continues.

All jobs need to pay a salary that covers basic living costs. And given how many people are now struggling on far higher salaries than NMW, there has been a huge failure in Government management of the UK economy (lack of investment in infrastructure, technology, education, energy and food security for decades, and then of course Brexit which was the nail in the coffin).

His comments are designed to attempt to deflect blame for this from the Governing party of 12 years to the populace. As this thread shows, it won't work.

happyinherts · 04/10/2022 23:08

And what does a 60 year old female do? Once upon a time she could retire, now it's an extra six years. Will anyone employ her?

Desiredeffect · 04/10/2022 23:09

Bit hard to change jobs when your also a carer for my disabled dd. Perhaps if they paid a better wage for people them we may not struggle as much. Conservatives really are a binch of idiots

WhiteFire · 04/10/2022 23:10

The pesky people on out-of-work benefits will do all the low(er) paid jobs, only in exchange for their measly benefits though.

Perfect plan.

TabithaTittlemouse · 04/10/2022 23:12

Lots of nurses are leaving to get better paid jobs. I wonder what happens when we all go?

Verytirednow · 04/10/2022 23:19

Well my son has just been offered a graduate job offering £40,000 .
As thrilled as he is he is also feeling embarrassed…absolutely no way will he tell his friends! Think it’s a shame that he feels like that TBH .

Eeksteek · 04/10/2022 23:30

Let them eat cake. Honestly, how are people so clueless?!

TheLoupGarou · 04/10/2022 23:41

I'm a nurse so I'm currently stuck with what the NHS will pay me..... Retraining in software development, what will happen when we all go I wonder?

Userxxxxx · 05/10/2022 00:06

If I hear on the 24th Dec, that I was a temp all along, god help the person saying this.

I've only worked in a depot a solid year joining before one Christmas and been a temp another christmas in it's national sister to know how peak works, but if someone has employed me under perm when really I'm a temp I won't be very happy. The salary would never made up for the fabrication of a dishonest scenario.

Only today a colleague has been told it does get boring come January and it dies of death (even without a recession) so they do finally get it.

Can you explain what this means? Struggling to follow it.

What is he embarrassed about? Is £40k too low or too high?

Pippa12 · 05/10/2022 03:14

I’m a nurse and really feeling the pinch. Maybe they could just consider paying us all a decent wage? Impossible to get a second job around changing shifts- nights, days and weekends!

Tory MP, Lee Anderson, stated, on Monday, that we don't really need many food banks, and they are just "little projects, run by do-gooders, who just want to feel good about themselves", and that how many people use Wetherspoons is the true barometer of wealth:

"Mr Anderson defended controversial remarks he made in the House of Commons about food banks in May - when he claimed people could "cook meals from scratch" for "30p a day" instead.

He said: "I've got a big bee in my bonnet about food poverty. I'm a big believer that we do need food banks, but not to the degree we've got them.

"Every do gooder is starting these little projects to make themselves feel good.

The 55-year-old told the party conference in Birmingham: ""Go in any Wetherspoons, that's the barometer of how this country is doing, when Wetherspoons is empty we've got a big problem."

He then accused the media of fearmongering, telling the audience: "Whenever we put the TV on people are telling us how poor we are."

He told the gathering he had worked with a local chef in his Ashfield constituency to make 172 meals after spending £50 in a supermarket.

"'30p Lee' they named me," he said. "That stuck but in a good sort of way, it got people talking about food poverty."

He claimed that young people are missing out on basic budgeting, telling the crowd: "If I got home economics bought back I'd be a very happy man."

Mr Anderson claimed that children go hungry due to the failings of their parents, telling young Conservatives: "I'll take no lectures from the left. How can we have food poverty when we've got an obesity crisis?"

@happyinherts see crap like that just muddies the waters. Lots òf women over 60 work, just as men have always done.

I think that any full time job should pay enough to live on. I also think that subsidised childcare would help more people go back to full time work.

SushiGo · 05/10/2022 07:07

The other thing that strikes me, is that these poorly paid (but necessary) jobs are mostly done by women who were told they weren't good enough at school to go to University.

Boys in that situation are mostly encouraged into trades - building, plumbing etc, which can pay really well. Girls in that situation are pushed towards hairdressing, care work, retail, where the pay is usually shit.

It's really difficult to improve your qualifications and build more transferable skills once you have been pidgeonholed into low paid work like that, as you are very quickly exhausted working long hours just to keep afloat.

SushiGo · 05/10/2022 07:09

It's a real travesty that a lot of these low paid jobs aren't paid more, particularly caring roles which are so essential to the functioning of the entire country.

ChakaKhanfan · 05/10/2022 07:13

Just another example of how out of touch they are, and I find it so depressing that they are supposed to represent us.
If it was that easy to just find another job, people would, no one wants to be poor or deciding on whether to eat or put the heating on.

CeeJay81 · 05/10/2022 07:15

Not sure how that'd work as there aren't a lot of high paying jobs where I live. Very rural area. Braverman said something simular, satin that people shouldn't need top up benefits. They are the nastiest of the nasty party.

TigerRag · 05/10/2022 07:19

Who will do the lower paid jobs? And what about carers and disabled people? Not all of us have the chance to get a job / a better job.

Untitledsquatboulder · 05/10/2022 07:20

Actually I think the culture of top up benefits is kind of toxic. Why should people work full time and then need UC and a food bank to make ends meet? More employers should pay a living wage.

Lunabun · 05/10/2022 07:22

Vile little man. What this amounts to is the belief that people who do minimum wage jobs do not deserve basic living standards.
