About what I feed my child

So at a recent 2 year olds party I noticed other kids eating and drinking stuff that my dc doesn't. I've noticed it a lot on playdates recently too..

My dc is 2.5 years old. We just give him milk and water to drink and veg puffs lentil chips and baby oat bars as snacks lots of fruit and veg. Occasionally chips or a slice of margarita pizza. The odd mini milk or lick or bite of our ice cream.

I've noticed children same age snacking on walkers crisps, drinking strong ribena, eating cupcakes, grown up biscuits like bourbons and nice's, midget gems etc.

I've also noticed my 2 year old being offered sugary biscuits and mini Cheddar at playgroups and when I decline I can tell people think I'm snooty. I'm not, I just thought I was supposed to follow guidelines. I'm a first time mum so enlighten me.. do most people let their kids eat whatever? Tbh it would make my life a lot easier 😂

I get what you are trying to do. I have never forgotten my cookery teacher telling me that if there was one food she could ban it would be crisps. They serve no nutritional purpose at all and are just full of crap. In your position I would carry on as you are at home and just relax the rules when you are out. We did that for years with ours. They still - in their 20’s - put a jug of water on the dinner table so good habits can stick. Our whole family still consider crisps as something you only eat in the pub.

Cherryblossoms85 · 05/10/2022 20:06

Why are people always so rude on here, it's disappointing.

pistachi0nuts · 05/10/2022 20:07

Wow so much hate in these comments! You’ve obviously touched a nerve here. You are just trying to be healthy and limit salt and sugar intake and mainly it’s completely up to you, don’t let these nasty comments bring you down. For what it’s worth I’d never let my 2 year old drink squash or eat walkers. Mainly because he doesn’t want for them. What nutritional benefit does Ribena have?! You do you and ignore these haters who are on the defensive.

SeenYourArse · 05/10/2022 20:16

OP I’m exactly the same there is no need for toddlers to eat any of that crap there’s plenty of time for garbage when they are old enough to know about and ask for it!

Skodacool · 05/10/2022 20:17

Skinnermarink · 04/10/2022 16:28

’baby oat bars’ are really no better than a big standard biscuit, just more expensive. You just feed gimmicks.

Ribena has no sugar in it anymore 🤣

As with most fruit drinks Ribera is ruinous for teeth. OP would do well to encourage her child to drink mostly water.

pinkpantherpink · 05/10/2022 20:17

You do you.

Walers crisps are probably too high in salt

Totally agree, very immature comments about the adult crisps, and even 1 joking about watching an adult film whilst eating adult crisps, weird!

KoalaCape · 05/10/2022 20:29

If something is the "forbidden fruit" then it's exciting and a child might want it more.

The best thing to do is educate them to make good decisions but not make their diet so limited that there are hundreds of exciting "treat" foods/drinks that they will want.

Mini cheddars are bad boyyyy so don't deny your child these 😂

Lol as if a chocolate bourbon is worse than baby oat bars...

Well they are if they are homemade. As in the ones I make my toddler have banana as the sweetener instead of sugar - so much healthier than a bourbon biscuit.

OP I do exactly the same as you but I usually make the snacks (yes I work as a teacher and have 2 older DDs) - my cousin has a DD 18 months and feeds her chick nuggets and waffles etc, and gives her juice - I find this bizarre. I also don't care if people think I'm snotty or "up my own arse" , i have my opinion on them and what they give their toddler, so let them have theirs.

Flugelbinder · 05/10/2022 21:16

That’s because it’s a ‘joke‘ @broodyat39 , not sure you know in some sections of society sarcasm, irony and jokes still exist.

‘Weird’.

Caiti19 · 05/10/2022 21:23

YANBU. The proliferation of junk available is a curse, and "treats" that are daily are no longer treats.

MissMaple82 · 05/10/2022 21:37

You sound very snooty!

Wasn't funny tho was it

sashadjas · 05/10/2022 21:44

Seriously?? How does anyone think this isn't reasonable??? She's not being a snacktime nazi ffs, it's her decision to keep msg and additives and shit out of her child's system! No, it's not what I did, but it's HER choice. NOT YOURS! I mean your choice OP, sorry I just get so mad over this sort of nonsense! NOTHING WRONG WITH ERRING ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION!

Flugelbinder · 05/10/2022 21:45

Depends whether you have a sense of humour.

Are we also judging people who feed their kids low welfare meat with growth hormones in it or just being snotty about salt and sugar today?

sashadjas · 05/10/2022 21:46

If it's even erring, and I don't think it is but that's just my opinion.

sashadjas · 05/10/2022 21:47

Who's being snotty love?

Yourcatisnotsorry · 05/10/2022 21:48

What qualifies a biscuit as ‘grown up’? There’s no bourbon in bourbons you know 🍪

I have just not a weird 1! Also totally agree about cheap meat! We need to sack these supermarkets off and support local butchers

Flugelbinder · 05/10/2022 21:52

@Yourcatisnotsorry

Jokes not allowed on this thread, sorry.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 05/10/2022 21:56

Nawww. Luckily I have some Jamie dodgers to entertain me instead. Surely the most childish of all biscuits?

SunflowerGirl91 · 05/10/2022 22:17

Wow - since when was wanting the best for your child such a bad thing? I think when people are faced with a parent like you OP (I mean that kindly) it forces people to think about what they feed their child and so instantly they become defensive.

im like you. I am always shocked at what people feed their kids and how they justify it - oh it’s a party, oh it’s the weekend, oh it’s only a few times a week etc

the amount of crap that most man made food contains is shocking and what’s worse is what it does to our bodies and brain. The numbers, the colours etc. but god forbid you should want your child to eat a healthy unprocessed diet 🙄

I beg to differ I'm sorry! Party rings are

HarryBlaster · 05/10/2022 22:43

Sugar that is added to foods, such as chocolate or sugary drinks, is easily digested and quickly absorbed into our blood stream. Sugars in these types of foods are also instantly released when we chew our food, which can have a detrimental effect on dental health. The sugars naturally found in fruits and vegetables are contained within the cells of the food, meaning we often digest and absorb them more slowly. Fruits and veggies also provide water, fibre, vitamins and minerals which are important for our body to stay healthy. Unlike sugary drinks which offer no nutritional benefit to us.

Pinkwithwhite · 05/10/2022 22:43

My toddlers eat all the bad stuff, and most of the good stuff. We talk about food, what's good about that particular food and what's not so good.

In my up bringing I was never made to eat veg DB and i both hated all veg and could snack on what we wanted when we wanted. Our fridge never had veg in but was full of chocolate.
Didn't have to finish what was on out plates either.

My brother and I now both love salads, fish and pretty much anything healthy and would try anything you put in front of us.

There are lots of food we don't buy at home but I don't care if they want a sausage roll from greggs when we are out.

It's not a big deal to me so it's not a big deal to them.
