AIBU to think this government is now totally dead in the water..?

Wonder what all the Truss handmaidens tying themselves in knots to defend the tax cut will say now..?

Why announce the policy and then change it 10 days later?

Because they said they'd remove the whip from Tories who voted against it, then well known Tories like Gove and Shapps said they'd vote against it anyway, with Gove saying "borrowing to fund tax cuts is unconservative". They've calculated that Tory MPs siding with Labour and making them lose the vote would be worse than u-turning now. Last night they said they'd delay the vote until after the OBR's report and the other announcements from KK on 23rd November, but overnight they clearly decided that wouldn't be enough and that there's no option but to u-turn.

AliceAbsolum · 03/10/2022 08:01

I vote tory. But for the first time ever this morning watching the chancellor on TV I thought, fuck it, I'll vote labour next time.
Takes the absolute piss

TBH I’d rather have A leader who did U-turns on bad decisions rather than carry on through with them to save face. I mean did people want the u-turn or not? If the answer is yes then what are you moaning for.

I suspect people want a government that actually thinks about the decisions they make, before they make them. A government who understands the economic impact of their economic policy, and doesn't need to wait until they see the £ fall and banks stopping mortgages before they consider the impact

DrBlackbird · 03/10/2022 08:01

They may not be pure idealogues after all

99% ideologues 1% trying to save their political necks.

Truss said it in plain sight yesterday. She believes in the cuts, but she should have done a better job at hiding them prepared the ground better.

I hope so, I really do

Yes, people want the option where they were never that fucking stupid in the first place. It's hardly an unreasonable desire.

AngelinaFibres · 03/10/2022 07:58

This.
It doesn't matter how bad the Conservatives are , Labour will never be voted in. People say things to opinion polls that they would never do in a voting booth. They say it to give the Consevstives a kick, then vote Conservative. There is simply no credible alternative.

Do you think that is what happened in 1997, 2001 and 2005 too - that people pretended to opinion polls they would vote Labour but then voted Tory instead Confused?

One of the biggest errors in political analysis is judging the next election through the prism of what happened in the one before.

Both Corbyn and Johnson have gone. There is a very small chance that Johnson could be back. But as it stands we have Starmer and Truss. People will be thinking about whether Truss is bad for their own prospects.

I think it is absolutely brilliant that the BoE had to step in with £65 BILLION support as a result of their uncosted budget proposals, and now they are not going to do them anyway - I really hope they are enjoying pissing away taxpayers' money! Angry

And this will not fully solve the problem that the markets are looking at the UK like Hmm, because they have shown they are completly out of control.

This ☹️

MrsDoyle351 · 03/10/2022 08:04

@AngelinaFibres

No credible alternative - eh?

You surely cannot be serious. I think you'll find the majority disagree. And polls do reflect what people think or who'd they would vote for, otherwise why do them?

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 03/10/2022 08:04

I was furious this morning listening to Kwarteng blaming the 'distraction' of the 45p rate and giving that as the reason for the u turn. Implying that those who were horrified by the policy are to blame for causing the distraction not the bloody awful policy in the first place.

urbanbuddha · 03/10/2022 08:05

I never dreamt the day would come when I'd be grateful to Michael Gove, but here it is. Interesting times.

KK mates still made millions betting on the pound dropping after he made his announcement at the fiscal statement. Nothing can change that.

KK & any of the others 'in the know in Govt profiting from this debacle should be made to 'donate' it to the NHS.

walkingonsunshinekat · 03/10/2022 08:05

Govt borrowing is still super high, hence now the markets have opened, his U turn has made no difference.

its not the reason for the markets reaction.

waffless · 03/10/2022 08:06

The people who work hard will be back to their jobs. They will also pay taxes for the. rest. Those who will be on Twitter all day whining. Social media is the devil’s work.
The conservatives, Lib Dem and Labour ( much worse) are a pile shit.

Iamchurchill · 03/10/2022 08:06

They’re dead in the water because they are fucking over too many people now in too many ways. They have no interest in looking after ALL the people, just the wealthy ones.
but even a lot of the well off ones would like to keep decent state schools, a functioning NHS, and an economy that doesn’t have the IM F panicking

Shepandawing · 03/10/2022 08:06

lannistunut · 03/10/2022 07:45

You don't understand the damage that has been done.

Politics is real, the economy is real - a lot of economic damage has been done that can't be undone.

I have a very good understanding thank you, and if you look past the sensationalist headlines you would too

RedAppleGirl · 03/10/2022 08:06

This thread much like social media in general is Labour activist central.
People were epidemiologists during covid, which turned out to be incorrect and a complete overreaction leading to the situation we're in atm. Now everyone is an economist and a market analyst.🙄😂

These threads are a shit show of incessant complainers.

lannistunut · 03/10/2022 08:07

Lunar270 · 03/10/2022 08:00

That would be nice, but clearly difficult for this government.

And to think, all those poor people switching mortgages right now. Iannistunut are you for real? People are suffering already and are now on their knees because of this. The UK is in a complete mess and that's your response 🤦

I must have typed my response badly, or maybe people do not read it properly, but what I said was:

If I had to choose between a PM who:
a) didn't make bad economic decisions that do real damage to the economy,
and
b) one who did make bad economic decisions that do real damage to the economy and then u-turned for political reasons,
I would choose the former.

Former means the first one - so the one who didn't make the fucking mistake in the first place. I do not think this u-turn is acceptable at all, the policy was clearly unacceptable and the economic damage is not reparable.

MrsDoyle351 · 03/10/2022 08:07

@urbanbuddha Grin Grin

I know exactly what you mean. Watched the interview yesterday and thought the same!!Grin

Tangled123 · 03/10/2022 08:08

I actually see the argument for reducing tax for the rich (if the country can afford it). I don’t really have a problem with that. My issue is that too many people in work are struggling. I think employers should have to pay living wages, but if they aren’t, the government should step in. Help should have gone to the ‘working poor’ first. Then give tax cuts to the rich.

I’ve never liked the Tories, but even I didn’t think they could sink this low. Wouldn’t surprise me if this was the plan the whole time though, they just wanted to make millions in the meantime. I agree with everyone who said they should be in jail.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 03/10/2022 08:08

How have you failed to notice that we do not have a credible government?

HAHAHAHAHA at sensationalist headlines. Yes the Financial Times, BoE and the IMF are well known for being sensationalist.

If you think this can allbe fixed with a U-turn 10 days after the event, you do not understand anything.

lannistunut · 03/10/2022 08:11

Chris Philps is having an awful time on Sky News just now, it sounds like the 45p --> 40p cut may have been his idea in the first place.

ClaudineClare · 03/10/2022 08:11

It is hilarious to see the squirming Tory supporters trying to justify this. Waiting patiently for But Corbyn to make an appearance.
