To think we’ll have a new government by Christmas?

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:12

Stay with me here - I know this might have sounded unlikely even as recently as a couple of weeks ago, but thanks to recent events, I think it’s looking more likely by the day.

Does anyone else agree, or am I alone in my thinking here?

I should add here that I’m fed up of the political musical chairs that has characterised our governments over the past 5 years or so, but curious to see if we get a new government over the next couple of months.

Let's hope so. The current government are as bad as can possibly be for 99% of the population.

Babyroobs · 02/10/2022 01:14

No I don't think that will happen. They surely can't oust another PM so soon after ousting Boris. Someone needs to just get on with the job.

MaryTruss · 02/10/2022 01:16

Do you mean a new leader and PM as a new government can't happen without a general election and there's no way that'll happen. Unless they rewrite the rules, the PM can't be changed afaik

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 02/10/2022 01:17

Lots of bets on her taking the 'shortest time as PM' title.

they kept asking on the radio today 'what do you need to hear from LT at the PC to restore your faith in the CP.

'I resign' was the only thing I could think of.

I mean a new government, as the new leader has the power to form a new government, even without a general election (just as Liz Truss did when she became leader).

OP posts:
Pilipalapal · 02/10/2022 01:24

I think the odds of that are extremely slim. How do you see it coming about? Truss resigning?

donquixotedelamancha · 02/10/2022 01:25

They put up with both Johnson and May far longer than seemed likely given their lack of competence.

Also, given that each new PM is worse than the last, the prospect of another is terrifying.

TooBigForMyBoots · 02/10/2022 01:26

You are jot alone @WagathaChristieMystery. I found myself wondering how many Conservative PMs is it till Chistmas?😆

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:28

I agree with both of you @Pilipalapal and @donquixotedelamancha . My feeling is Truss will have to resign, because her credibility is totally shot. The economy is on its knees. How do you suggest we carry on if she stays as PM? At the very least, she should be visible right now and reassuring the country (and economic markets) about the situation and telling us what she’ll do to calm the situation, but she is doing absolutely nothing, and instead going to the Tory conference as if it’s business as usual. It makes me so angry.

Truss won't resign so soon after becoming PM and the party won't want to oust her so quickly either, there would be nothing to gain by replacing her with anyone else at the moment. We've only just had the new government formed so there won't be any reshuffle yet. And we aren't due a general election for a couple of years. A vote of no confidence in the government could be held and if it passed we would have an early general election, but I don't see how it would pass because the government have such a large majority, they aren't going to vote themselves out.
I don't see any other way we could have a new government this year. What do you anticipate happening?

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:35

It’s interesting @Adultchildofelderlyparents, because I agree with you on all your points

My hunch on Tuesday being replaced and a new government being formed came from the papers saying that Truss’s backbenchers are getting more and more frustrated/alarmed by what she’s done with the economy. The papers have said there are backbenchers plotting against her atm.

I don’t know what that will lead to. However, the fact they’re even planning to act against her in the first place, when it could risk them their jobs, makes me think there might be a vote of no confidence in her. (I appreciate the rules will have to be changed first). Then perhaps she might be voted out as PM and replaced - perhaps with Rishi Sunak, but who knows?

My hunch on Truss being replaced, not Tuesday!

My understanding is that, under current rules, Truss cannot be ousted for a year from her selection.

Of course, she could resign. But that seems unlikely. She seems hell bent on pushing her "trickle down " ideas tthrough.

The rules could, of course be changed. But that too seems unlikely.

so I think the country is stuck with her for the next two years.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/10/2022 01:40

Stockpile food and ammo for the coming zombie apocalypse? That seems to be her policy direction.

I honestly don't have a fucking clue anymore.

donquixotedelamancha · 02/10/2022 01:42

No, it's trivially easy for the 1922 committee to change the rules. If there is a reasonable chance of a no confidence vote passing then a rule change would get through easily.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:45

If we’re stuck with her for the next couple of years though, isn’t the economy going to end up being absolutely on its knees?? We’re due another election in 2024, so if she holds on until then, I think things will become incredibly difficult for lots and lots of people. I think people’s lives will be at risk, at least for the most vulnerable people in society.

OP posts:
Adultchildofelderlyparents · 02/10/2022 01:48

There will always be backbenchers who are unhappy, but it would be political suicide for anyone to try to force the PM out so soon. The Conservative party is in a weak place now, they need to aim for some party stability not push for yet more uncertainty. Any party member trying to oust Truss now is basically pushing the party out of power at the same time and themselves out with it.
This current situation is not all Truss's doing, it's been years in the making. From Cameron onwards, each PM has gradually eroded the country more and have handed Truss a poisoned chalice, though she's fully embraced the challenge of trying to make things worse still. I think things will get worse before they get better.
FWIW, I'm looking forward to Labour winning the next election with a landslide when it finally comes.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 02/10/2022 01:50

"If we’re stuck with her for the next couple of years though, isn’t the economy going to end up being absolutely on its knees??"

Yes, welcome to Broken Brexit Tory Britain.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:50

I’m worried the country will be in tatters by the time Labour eventually get voted in. They will inherit an absolute mess if they ever get voted in - which will then be blamed on them as usual.

Doesn’t it feel like a horrible race to the bottom though? Where will it end? It feels like a car crash happening right now, and we’ve got no one in government at the bloody steering wheel.

There is a petition seeking to bring Truss and KK to account through the law.

That would be ground for a new government, so @WagathaChristieMystery it is possible.

Can Truss and Kwarteng be prosecuted for Misconduct in Public Office

There are concerns about insider trading (which is unlawful) and irresponsibility not have scrutiny from the Office of Budge Responsibility.

Sunak is likely to take over imo. He also seems more competent with the economy than Truss and KK… he did warn her that unfounded tax cuts (for the rich too!!!) would spook the markets. Truss didn’t listen because she’s hubristic.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 02:15

Thanks for the petition link, WakeUp - I’ve signed. It’s unbelievable to think Kwasi Kwarteng and Liz Truss might have broken the law - I still can’t really believe the depths that this government has gone to.

OP posts:
WakeUpAndBe · 02/10/2022 02:21

Share it with others. It’s a new petition started by Joshua Silver who seems like a credible petitioner (appears to be an Oxford professor).

The LibDems are also requesting a legal enquiry into the insider trading claims.
