To think we’ll have a new government by Christmas?

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 01:12

Stay with me here - I know this might have sounded unlikely even as recently as a couple of weeks ago, but thanks to recent events, I think it’s looking more likely by the day.

Does anyone else agree, or am I alone in my thinking here?

I should add here that I’m fed up of the political musical chairs that has characterised our governments over the past 5 years or so, but curious to see if we get a new government over the next couple of months.

If we’re stuck with her for the next couple of years though, isn’t the economy going to end up being absolutely on its knees?? We’re due another election in 2024, so if she holds on until then, I think things will become incredibly difficult for lots and lots of people. I think people’s lives will be at risk, at least for the most vulnerable people in society.

2 more years of Liz Truss and I genuinely don't see the Tories being reelected in our lifetime. If she can do this much damage in a week imagine what she'd do with 2 years.

I read yesterday that an ally of hers said the problem was that her and Kwasi were highly intelligent and therefore 6 steps ahead of the rest of us plebs and needed to just 'explain herself better' to us all. In what world do you have to be living in to believe that crap?! They probably believe it themselves....deluded stupid AND arrogant. It's a toxic mix.

No we won't. May have new PM but definitely no general election soon. Sadly.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 12:50

Where will we be in 2 years is Liz Truss is still PM?

Purely just from an economic perspective, the economy will be ruined in 2 years’ time if Truss is still PM then. I’m not an economist, but am obviously worried about the economy, and would dearly love to get on the property ladder one day if I can…

I can’t think of a verb stronger than ‘ruined’, but I know that doesn’t go deep enough to explain the damage her government might do to the economy. I really don’t think 2 years is long for her ‘trickle-down’ approach to work with the economy (that’s if it even works in the first place).

I also work in the public sector, and am not sure if I like the idea of working there for 2 more years. I used to love working there, and would love to carry on, but not if Truss has plans to fuck it over further. To be blunt,
I think we’re all fucked.

Sorry to be crude, but I really feel very down about politics right now (as I’m sure others do too).

She didn't sound convincing enough today and Ms Kneussberg isn't the toughest interviewer around. I'd love her to be interviewed by Andrew Neil or Sophy Ridge or someone who could have really had her on the ropes.
What was more astonishing was Michael Gove and his comments.
I'm not sure what they can do now. A lot of the MPs are clearly unhappy they were not told about this fiscal event. The chancellor made sure certain other people were in the know.
Things might settle down , but she already appears a bit fragile. Have to see what the city thinks of it all too, they have pumped enough money into propping it up so far and how long that lasts is anyone's guess.

Why can't people believe that they may have broken the law ? Politicians of all parties believe they are above it all the time

Maybe the chancellor just hinted to his city friends and donors that something might happen. Unless it's been taped or there is clear evidence, he'll probably get away with it anyway
Hints and allegations is all we have.
It is fishy and today his new boss was quick to absolve herself of any blame as well

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 13:05

Just sticking the petition for a general election back up here, if anyone wants to sign or share:

’all parties’ in nonsense. The Tories are the real culprits for this.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2022 13:22

I read the BoE can only sustain support for a week or so.

Shes unhinged, but l think she’ll stay on.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 13:29

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow if the BoE can only sustain support for a week, what does that mean for the economy then? Does that just mean the economic situation will get worse? Isn’t a PM supposed to show good leadership skills, rather than just digging their heels in and doubling down on their terrible policies, when things get very tough?

OP posts:
Clavinova · 02/10/2022 13:36

It’s a new petition started by Joshua Silver who seems like a credible petitioner (appears to be an Oxford professor)

Joshua Silver interviewed here in 2017 -

www.lbc.co.uk/radio/presenters/iain-dale/meet-the-man-reported-amber-rudds-speech-to-police/

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 13:36

There was a caller on lbc radio on Thursday morning and he was talking about the Bank of England 65 billion pounds prop up. He thinks it'll only last around a week. He sounded genuinely worried and not just someone spreading lies or misinformation , but someone actually in the know.
I hope things settle down, but it feels very fragile and we need a strong leader to get us through this winter. I don't think that the new PM is that person, she is out of her depth , sadly

Orangesandlemons77 · 02/10/2022 13:37

What would actually happen if it did run out I wonder..

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/10/2022 13:40

I don’t know what the BoE will do.

She needs to go but l don’t know how😟

KnickerlessParsons · 02/10/2022 13:46

I predict a GE just after Christmas, which the Tories will win by a tiny majority, because Keir, and we'll have a hung parliament. Liz Truss will then be forced by the 22s to resign as leader and the Tory members will wither vote back Boris - who wasn't that bad as PM, he just ballsed everything up with all the parties and trying to be too matey with the people who worked under him - or (I hope) Rishi will stand again and win this time.
Tories will struggle on with new PM and a hung parliament.
Labour will elect a new leader (not Angela Rayner - god willing) and then win the next election which will be approximately a year from now.
What happens after that is anyone's guess.😟

KnickerlessParsons · 02/10/2022 13:48

PS - DH (not a Conservative voter) and I have just joined the Conservative Party so we can have a vote when Liz gets ousted. The more people who join and have a say in their next leader, the better. It's only about £25 per year.

SpringRainbow · 02/10/2022 13:49

I’m always amazed that Boris survived past 2019, I was convinced he would be out by Christmas and yet we have only just got rid of him.

I would love to think she will be gone by the end of the year but the world is a really strange thing.

MissPoldark · 02/10/2022 13:50

No. Another few weeks of inertia while everyone pours their energy into election campaigns wont do any of us any favours, it will just create more instability.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 13:53

I’m really at a loss for what we can do to resolve or improve the economic/political situation. I agree with PP that we risk weeks or months of inaction if a general election is called, which will make things worse (and if a new PM is then voted then, that won’t necessarily improve things). But equally, if Liz Truss carries on as leader, I think things will stay bad. I really don’t see any solution to this.

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 13:56

Hung parliament's are a nightmare.
I wish they could all work together a bit more
Put us on a war footing ? It's the infighting that tears parties apart and it's the people and the country that always suffer. That 65 billion could have gone on so many other things that are needed. People playing fast and loose all the time to make more money is immoral, yet all of it was avoidable ( not the money needed for the fuel bills, but the tax cuts and potential borrowing for that)
It's only what I've read , but it shows how inexperienced they were thinking it could work out without being properly costed out
The triple lock is staying , she said , so the older conservative voters will be alright.

NoWordForFluffy · 02/10/2022 14:04

What is possibly interesting, is that any Tory MP voting against Truss' economic plans will have the Whip removed, thereby converting them to independent MPs rather than Tory ones.

There are a fair few rumblings from the back benches, but it remains to be seen if any will actually put their money where their mouth is and lose the Whip.

However, if any do, the Tory majority will get smaller, which is no bad thing. I - sadly - can't see enough jumping ship to mean a VoNC would be successful though, the numbers don't stack for that.

WagathaChristieMystery · 02/10/2022 14:09

Very interesting point NoWordforFluffy.

I’ve just been thinking about how things could change the political situation, and I’ve heard a lot in the papers over the last few months about widespread strikes (or even a general strike) happening this winter. I know lots of industries are already striking, and if more join them, I think that will likely have a big impact on this government’s lifespan.

OP posts:
Stationsofthecross · 02/10/2022 14:12

No. We need some kind of stability not another PM so soon!
