To buy a Canada Goose jacket?

Have asked real people who mostly say it's a wanky status symbol and has gone the way of Burberry tartan from way back.

I thought they looked comfy and on trend and id look down with the kids

YABU = over-priced, over used and looks like desperate showing off
YANBU = top quality product and you'll look fashionable

Have you seen the horrific pictures of hundreds of dogs and coyotes In huge containers or dead because they are being used for fur ? All for a stupid coat

hamdden12 · 30/09/2022 20:09

If you really want to spend that much money on a coat and be down with the kids get a Moncler one. Personally I've got a North Face triple c jacket which is warm and keeps you dry because it's long. It's also about £600-£1000 cheaper than a Canada Goose or Moncler one and does the same job.

YABU - they kill wild dogs to trim the hoods with their fur, with cruel snare traps. In a frantic attempt to escape, the poor dogs try and knaw off their own limbs. Horrific.

UGLY through and through and so is anyone wearing them.

This, plus it's considered a bit naff these days.

StarWitness · 30/09/2022 20:12

Clearly OP wasn’t aware of the ethics of the company. Neither was I. I just thought they were what drug dealers round my area thought looked good.

No need for all the hysterical ‘you’re a terrible person!’ outrage. OP probably won’t buy one now. Calm down.

Midnights · 30/09/2022 20:12

YANBU - they're comfy and great for winter! They no longer use fur in their products either if that is an issue for you 😊

Notplayingball · 30/09/2022 20:12

Flapjacker48 · 30/09/2022 19:30

Only people I see wearing them are common.

🤣🤣🤭

Haudyourwheesht · 30/09/2022 20:24

It's a life goal

GrinGrin

Wouldn't wear one though.

Lcb123 · 30/09/2022 20:30

Very poor ethically there’s always protests outside their Regents St store.
It’s not cold enough in UK to need it, unless you work outside. Better to buy layers like a fleece, a puffer jacket etc as much more versatile for the unpredictable weather!

onmywayamarillo · 30/09/2022 19:34

I have one too .. it's like wearing a duvet

So warm 😬 just add I also have a duck/goose feather down duvet

I also eat goose and duck
😬😬😬

If what posters are saying about the company who makes these coats is true then your post really isn’t funny at all.

Starsinyoureyes13 · 30/09/2022 20:40

If its for kids I wouldn't buy it, I read on Facebook a mum who said her child was robbed of a jacket just like that.
Its not worth it if there's a risk of it being stolen off the kids back.

Real fur is more ethical than fake fur which is far more environmentally damaging and therefore kills more animals in the long run.

Thank you!
All this talk about plastic and then everyone is wearing it. Everyone is flipping over microplastocs and then sheds them happily from fake fur coats.

If we kill animals for food, we should use the fur as well like we do with skin. It's only logical

flingingmelon · 30/09/2022 22:34

Canada goose phased out fur at the end of last year.

Last to join the party but they got there in the end.

If you want to buy cos you like the look of them, go for it.

If you want a top performing luxury down fill jacket go Moncler or Yves Salomon instead.

You want goose, not duck as it's heavier. You want a high fill power - 750 or more. Ratio 80/20. The fill is how much the down puffs out. The higher it is the lighter the coat and the warmer it will be. Ideally go for Redown, recycled down which comes from old hotel duvets and similar. Poly equivalents are alright but they won't be as fluffy and light.

You also 100% want a water proof finish.

Finally it MUST be machine washable / go in the tumble dry. Feathers hate dry cleaning chemicals, it causes them to release oil which will stain your coat and dry out the down, leaving it brittle.

If you really want to make sure you're getting the absolute best, ask sales staff about the coats IDFL and Clo rating. A really good brand should be able to tell you this. IDFL is how many feathers come out of the garment when testing. Under a dozen is classed as excellent. Clo is the insulation rating, 1 = the amount of clothing you need to keep comfortable in a 20 degree room. It increases to accommodate colder temps.

I think I need to name change now as I've probably outed myself Grin

flingingmelon · 30/09/2022 22:37

Sorry - forgot one thing.

Any luxury down coat brand should be signed up to the Responsible down standard and on request should be able to provide proof of where the down was sourced.

What the fuck have I just read ?

PatientlyWaiting21 · 30/09/2022 23:04

If you’re happy for the way they butcher the animals then crack on!

If you want to spend a lot of money on a good coat from a company with fantastic ethics then look at Patagonia.

Much cooler, and more practical in my eyes than Canada Goose.

I love Patagonia, isn't that the company where the founder has stepped back and pledged future profits to environmental projects? Don't seem to be sold in any places in the UK near me though

decayingmatter · 01/10/2022 08:30

Aside from all the brutal animal killing, they aren't even a status symbol amongst the wannabe road men teenagers any more, they all seem to wear parajumper coats now. And also the vast majority of teenagers and young adults round here in any of those sorts of coats are wearing fake ones and everyone knows it so it actually decreases status, as everyone just thinks 'market'.

Busybeeble · 01/10/2022 08:32

Whenever I see someone wearing a CG jacket I feel the urge to spit on them.
I don’t obviously.
I content myself with giving them a filthy look.
Vile.
Why wear the echoes of pain and suffering when it is absolutely, positively not necessary?
YABU

I think they're tacky, sorry! Very 'blingy' sort of style

Legoninjago1 · 01/10/2022 08:40

If you want to drop a lot of cash on a jacket, go with Moncler. Otherwise Holland Cooper / Barbour is more my choice.

Poppins2016 · 01/10/2022 08:42

Flopisfatteningbingforchristmas · 30/09/2022 18:36

The website say they are suitable for temp -15 to -25c.

To add to this... -15 to -25 is unimaginably cold for the UK and the coat would therefore be wildly unsuitable, you'd be steaming hot!

I've spent time in winter at -15 and (though admittedly I wore additional base layers, though nothing 'technical'), my coat was flimsier than Canada Goose and I was just fine.

ThatshallotBaby · 01/10/2022 09:07

Patagonia is a brilliant company, they have given all the shares to the earth.
Great, practical hardwearing clothes too. Highly recommend them.

InsertPunHere · 01/10/2022 09:12

They stopped using fur, it was widely reported, @savethebeesandthecees
