Have asked real people who mostly say it's a wanky status symbol and has gone the way of Burberry tartan from way back.

I thought they looked comfy and on trend and id look down with the kids

YABU = over-priced, over used and looks like desperate showing off
YANBU = top quality product and you'll look fashionable

OP posts:

Overpriced, uses fur, cruel to the birds they get the down from and you look like a drug dealer.

AriettyHomily · 30/09/2022 19:02

I can't think where in the uk it would be suitable attire, never mind the ethics and shit fakes and drug dealer connotations.

fallinover · 30/09/2022 19:04

I live in USA Midwest were it gets seriously cold, they are very popular here.
You simply don't need that kind of warmth in the UK.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 30/09/2022 19:05

YABU

Moonshine86 · 30/09/2022 19:08

They are now furless I believe

ItsaPeppaPink · 30/09/2022 19:09

Where I live, they're very popular with drug runners and dealers, very much a status symbol.....

MissDollyMix · 30/09/2022 19:10

Is there an ethical alternative? Or a more ethical alternative I should perhaps say? I’m not the OP but I really really need a very warm coat. A lot of people saying it doesn’t get down to -15 in the U.K. are right (and I’ve lived through a North American winter, they’re no joke) but my DD has an outdoor hobby that sees me standing for hours on end in the driving rain on a North Yorkshire hillside with a biting wind coming straight off the sea from Scandinavia. It’s cold. I could never countenance a CG coat for all the reasons listed here so any recommendations for warm alternatives would be greatly received.

All the kids are wearing them, they are a bit of a status symbol for the more 'street' kids around here so on that basis I wouldn't.

How on earth do the kids afford them? I have one and it was expensive. It will last me most of my life though.

OP Yes they are going fur-free. And no, you don't need one in most parts of the UK I'd think, unless you're really far north.

BashfulClam · 30/09/2022 19:11

@MissDollyMix have a look at mountain warehouse. I got a great thick warm coat there,

pigalow27 · 30/09/2022 19:11

Aren't they mostly worn by roadmen selling drugs?

StandingInTheMoment · 30/09/2022 19:12

I don’t think they are til the end of this year, that was their plan anyway. Regardless, they took too long to act, I’d never buy from them.

FourChimneys · 30/09/2022 19:13

The way they treat the birds they get the down from is horrific, look it up.

You may as well wear a badge saying I support animal cruelty - which I'm sure you don't by the way.

3WildOnes · 30/09/2022 19:13

I am consider buying one. I'm always freezing in the winter and need a super warm waterproof coat for dog walking and watching my children play rugby and football. I havent found one warm enough yet!

OrangeTrifle · 30/09/2022 19:13

Uggh. No don't even think about it.
Tacky and immoral

TabithaTittlemouse · 30/09/2022 19:14

You decide

I would judge anyone that I saw wearing one in real life.

NCFT0922 · 30/09/2022 19:15

@Nandocushion i would assume their parents buy them.

Totalityloss · 30/09/2022 19:15

If they have down in I would not buy them. I’ve seen video of them getting the down. They literally rip it out of the living conscious birds. Like someone ripping hair out of your scalp. The birds look like they are in shock with the pain afterwards.

This. It's not just the fur, it's the feathers too.

Mangofandangoo · 30/09/2022 19:15

Really unethical. I feel pure fury when I see 'celebs wearing them

AmyDudley · 30/09/2022 19:16

YABU - unless you like walking around wearing dead animals. They kill wild animals in cruel traps that cause immense suffering and distress to make the fur trim, they use goose down much of which comes from geese kept in very inhumane conditions.
Get a different coat - there are loads out there that aren't an advert for cruelty, no need to have the skin ripped off an animals back to put a jacket on yours. You won't look down with the kids, you'll look like a person who doesn't give a shit about the creatures we share the planet with, and that's not a good look.

InCheesusWeTrust · 30/09/2022 19:16

I don't get why they couldn't use simple rabbit fur.

Yeah they are made for proper cold, most of uk doesn't need jackets like that. Look for something more suitable for yours

3WildOnes · 30/09/2022 19:17

Any suggestions for other coats which are super warm and waterproof?

JofraArchersFastestBall · 30/09/2022 19:17

If you want to spend a lot of money on a good coat from a company with fantastic ethics then look at Patagonia.

Much cooler, and more practical in my eyes than Canada Goose.

BernadetteMatthews · 30/09/2022 19:17

It's wild dog fur and they boil the birds alive to get the feathers intact.

I used to work in their social media team. They're not an ethical company.

DoYouRememberLesDennis · 30/09/2022 19:17

No way, ugly coat, and you are keeping warm under layers of unnecessary suffering!!
